Unai Emery - Ex-Arsenal Manager

Looks a bit like Gary Neville:

It depends on what you consider to be a well run club.

If a well-run club is one that marshals its resources to achieve the greatest probability of success on the pitch, then Arsenal is indeed poorly run.
IF a well-run club is one whose sole goal is maximizing profits then Arsenal is fairly well-run.

The problems with current board begin with Kroenke and the stadium. As Usmanov has pointed out over the last 10 years, there are several ways to finance a stadium for a club. The best option for the health of the club itself, is for the owners to essentially lend the club some of their own money to pay down the bank debt and then the club owes the owners the money. This is the best for the health of the club because the club's finances do not accrue extra interest.
Considering how utterly poor our deals were to finance the Emirates, Kroenke failure to do this (Usmanov called it the "rights issue") indicates an extreme focus on maximizing personal profits of Kroenke rather than maximizing the efficacy of the Arsenal football club.

Additionally we see a string of baffling decisions from the Kroenke board such as the miserly insistence on keeping £200 million cash in the bank at a time when that money would have been far better invested into playing assets. What is suspicious is that while keeping this cash in the bank for Arsenal was unnecessary for Arsenal finances, Kroenke was taking out a £500 million loan for his personal ranch and financing a $1 billion loan package for his stadium and property re-development for his LA Rams (important to remember he is not just building a stadium but re-developing commercial property as he did with his sweetheart deals with WalMart.

We refused to invested over a few million in Higuian and then Suarez. Being excessively miserly and risk averse damaged the club heavily on the pitch. Either one of those signings would have improved us on the pitch and then turned a greater profit! But Kroenke's strategy is "penny wise, pound stupid".

On top of all of this personal greed, Arsenal has been utterly atrocious in the commercial deal department. This rubbish was touted as some advantage of Kroenke 10 eyars ago, yet Kroenke's team has failed miserably.

~12 years ago, Arsenal was at its most marketable globally. We also achieved roughly 70% of United's commercial revenues. Yet now we have fallen so far behind in 12 years that we only account for about 40% of United's commercial revenue.

Considering the period I refer began a few years out from the Invincibles and CL finalists and Arsenal were a stronger global brand than now, this can only be seen as a massive failure for the commercial department of Arsenal board.

On top of that Kroenke is just a cnut. During the Suarez saga, Liverpool's owner John Henry spoke out publicly on behalf of his club "what are they smoking at Emirates". Meanwhile Silent Stan is off wanking to murdering endangered species letting John Henry make him look like a fool. I want an owner that cares about the club even superficially like John Henry who is willing to stand up and represent the club with honor and passion. Kroenke is just a selfish, corporate clown.

I disagreed on the finance of the stadium and people are so used to sugar daddy as owner. Interest rate has been on historical low for almost a decade and there is nothing wrong for the way arsenal financed her stadium. I also disagreed on the club did not invest in the squad since 2013, but our transfer business for sure is not as efficient as Liverpool. Wenger was responsible for all football related matters in Arsenal, and he was definitely responsible for player transfers. There is a reason why both Dick Law and Steve Rowley lost their jobs and Sven Mislintat was hired, and Wenger also lost his job as well.

I have a doubts about Emery... but, well, we'll see the next season. Can't make worse than Wenger this season, no?

Despite not being great, i thought his english would have been worse. He also sounded very passionate about this opportunity. Think he wants to prove himself after P.S.G.

I personally think he'll do very well. He's going to instantly sort out a lot of problems associated with us (I.E. Player instructions). He's not the type to sit back and let the team play. He will look to improve everyone and make the system like a well oiled machine. Quite excited that our players will actually know what to do without the ball now.

Good luck with that mate.

The trend of more too clubs moving this way has been happening for a while.

If all teams will end up playing this way and with mostly the same training regime it will be up to the
supplements taken or cough cough that will decide the league title in a few years

Exactly. Pep would be licking his lips. He could assemble a team in 11 years.

Pep aside, no one could make anything of that team in 50 million budget. Arsenal fans should be furious (not with Emery, but with the transfer funds)

Edit: not that I care and on the other side it forces you to get the best out of what you got.

ehh 50mil? Thats one player lol, even the bargain basement poverty specialists Spurs will have more than that.

I wouldn’t think too much of the 50m budget that’s being reported. It’s more complex than just purchasing, say, two 25m players. Something to do with amortisation.

The board at Arsenal really need to get their act together. If they don't back him in his first transfer window it will be very tough for him to maintain any credibility gowing. Things move very fast in football these days. Fans are impatient. Players are a bunch of pussies and give up on the team after one poor season. I don't see them moving forward.

Gazidis said Emery won the job by presenting him a detailed plan for every player.

We really needed someone like this.

Its not sugar daddy.
Think of it like this. When Danny Fiszman bought into the club, he put £50 million into the club as a sign of good custodianship. Seaman and Adams have credited that small (for the mega wealthy) investment as being crucial to stabilizing the wage structure and placating the best players after Graham's shenanigans. That wasn't being a sugar daddy but simply a smart investment into the business from the owner.

Since Kroenke bought into the club he has more than doubled his money. He is very close to realizing £1 Billion in profit from investing into Arsenal!
Yet he has only ever taken a few million cash out of the club for "consulting fees". It would have gone a long way for AFC competitiveness had he simply canceled the bank debt and let the club owe him the money. That would've greatly helped us in the 2012-2015 period. But again, he seems to have leveraged his Arsenal profits into his personal gilded ranch and his latest property development.

This is just simply not how business works. With the interest rate this low there is absolutely no point to inject that much cash into the club to save 2% interest in the past decade, and that is absolutely not the way Spurs fund her stadium as well.

He will watch Welbeck trying to dribble and run back to PSG begging for an assistant manager position.

There is if the goal is to optimize organizing a club's resources for success on the pitch. Again, investment in Higuain or Suarez instead of penny pinching would have seen a greater profit than not investing. But, its slightly riskier. Its simply a more risk = more reward equation.

If the goal is simply maximizing profit with the absolute least risk possible irrespective of success on the pitch, then you would be correct. Kroenke chose the absolute most risk-averse strategy possible. That is not necessarily the best strategy to choose.

Arsenal is a business to Kroenke, same as Man Utd to Glazer, and Liverpool to John W. Henry. The goal is to maximize profit for the American owners and investors. Like you mentioned in your post, success on the pitch is needed to increase commercial revenue, and Arsenal is falling behind at the moment because of her performance in the past decade. Chelsea, Man City and PSG are either MEGA rich toys or back by a nation, their business model is completely different to other clubs include Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.

I believe Arsenal Board did finally realize the issue, and therefore a change in management structure took place last Oct.

2% interest on loan to construct the stadium? No way our borrowing costs were ever that low. There is also the problem of front loading sponsorship deals which left the club stuck on low commercial deals for years before we could renew.

The most stupid part is stashing 200 mil in the bank earning less than your 2% interest instead of reinvesting it into the playing squad. Basic economics tell you that holding cash during massive inflationary times is the worst thing you can do. Refusing to pay 35m for Higuian who then went for 70m a couple years later is a perfect example of this.

Transfer budgets have nothing to do with amortisation.

For every player he hasn't worked with yet? How does he know that his plan for a certain player will work?

Welbeck: Score more goals
Lacazette: Play more matches
Ozil: Run more, get more assists

Sounds more like a generic copypasta to me.

Very unlikely they were getting interest rates anything like that. Certainly financing costs have been a significant part of Arsenal's budget since the stadium build started. It's only really the past couple of years that the new stadium has started to pay for itself.

Yep, getting slagged off by DT and Troopz on a weekly basis at Arse Fan TV is a dream come true.

If he doesn't hit the ground running - and he won't - the fans are gonna be ruthless. He's got no goodwill account built up, no attachment to the club.

Unlike Wenger if things go downhill, the board will cup most of the flack if not all. Wenger was a shield that doesn't exist.

Emery will get at least 2 years to show progress. And given where we are, it won't be that difficult to show progress.

Arsenal just spanking money on transfers isn’t the answer.

Shouldn’t have escaped Utd fans that Utd were far more successful when they had a core of youth playing and were very conservative in the transfer market. Panic buys like Sanchez didn’t help much.

Real Madrid found out 20 years ago just spanking money on Galatico players every season doesn’t actually work.

Spending money smartly and moulding the 11 and first team squad in to a style of play will win trophies. Atletico Madrid are probably the best example of this. Zero net spend over the last decade, new stadium, have won a league, cups and got to plenty of finals.

Key players like Alonso and Kante in Chelsea’s recent trophies didn’t all cost loads of money as well. Conte finding a system that worked for the squad was the most important thing. Getting the best out of Luiz, Kante, Alonso, Moses etc.

Emery needs to create a system and style of play that suits Arsenals squad. £50m could be plenty if Emery identifies the players he needs for the system he wants and it all slots in to place.

Why? We need to buy, but also to improve some of our players.
You're right but that shouldn't have been the primary reason for his appointment.
I might be wrong but it sounds like Gazidis is saying he was picked cause he isn't really going to shake up the squad .

Might be tempting fate here but what has Klopp won in the time Wenger was at Arsenal for the same time frame ?

He might not have won anything but I think it’s fair to say his Liverpool side have outperformed Wengers Arsenal over the last 3 years considering he was new to the league and taking over a team in decline. The quality of football they are playing under Klopp is more Highbury Wenger than anything Wenger has done for a very long time.

And of course a CL final to come. He’s made as many European finals in 3 years as Wenger has in 22 years.

Yeah, Klopp's brand of football is great too. They concede a lot of goals but Liverpool games are a lot of fun to watch, which is something I can't say for most Arsenal games. Can't remember the last time a Wenger side ripped apart a top team in the CL like Liverpool did to Man City. Klopp has turned this Liverpool side around and made them competitive once again.

He’s made as many European finals in 3 years as Wenger has in 22 years.
And won the same number as Wenger too. Is Klopp the new Wenger?

Fair point. It's a risk, but if Emery was capable of improving our current squad it would already be a massive thing.

Hard to see where arsenal go from here if they end up with a worse season next year. They could end up in a similar 6th to 8th limbo that we did from 09 to 16 (minus one season).

You can't say that. Even if you don't work with a player you still see them play. Emery's team has also played against this current Arsenal squad so I'm sure he did his homework on the players before his interview. It's what we call being prepared.

Hence the reason I brought it up. As someone who works with the management of people, you can only really talk about roles and structure in job interviews. You can't start saying "I'm going to get this person to do that job" so on and so forth. You don't know the character of these people or if they're even going to be receptive to your plans with them, these are all things you find out when you get in the job and spend every day with them.

Also, stating that you're going to "Get x, out of x" is a sure fire way to get yourself the sack when it doesn't happen.
