Good half. Keeping Saka quiet is one of the hardest jobs a fullback in this league will face and Malacia did pretty well. Never seems to give the ball away either.

Feels like he's still half a yard slow and obviously getting up to 90' is gonna be a struggle, but we need him a lot more than we'd like to now.

Malacia hasn't played football for almost 18 months? (could be more), his fitness level is no worse than Yoro. Evans could have played in the middle of the three so he would be less likely to be exposed in wide areas.
Yoro is an 18 year old in a new league. Very few managers start the new prospect away. And he’s obviously one they want to protect much more. And have Maguire then exposed in wide areas? Amorim chose the best back three we had available and the more defensively minded wingbacks we had. It’s pretty plain to see. None of this shows ‘Amorim likes him and we have to trust his judgement here.’ He’s just trying him out as much as he’s trying out everyone / using the closest round peg to round hole we have available.

He was probably the best man to man marker in Holland before he joined us

Did well today...
Not surprised he got hooked off second half as I guess Amorim wanted more attacking thread. But it backfired

Agreed, played well. Amorim said right now he can only play for a certain amount of time so he had to take him off. Understandable given how long he's been out for.

Also the booking he was on was trouble waiting to happen and we needed to get Amad on for an attacking threat.

Viktoria Plzen 1:2 Man Utd New
Was defensively composed and was often free to receive the ball when we were attacking, but Martinez consistently overlooked him

Has been out long and this needs to find his feet again but he needs to improve fast. This isn't good enough. Although to be fair to him he was paired with one of our worst players at the moment on the left

He's a full back, he likes to defend more than attack. There's no role suitable for a player of his qualities in this system.

Yep. Five defenders on the pitch won’t work for us. It’s probably one of the main reasons Amad has played at right wing back, he’s the only wide attacking player that has defensive qualities.

Yes when Antony and Garnacho got on the pitch all of a sudden the opponent had more to worry about.
Long term both wingbacks need to be players who will contribute goals and assist regularly.

True, but again, he was high up on the pitch on multiple occasions and Martinez choose to not play to him basically every single time

Yeah that was certainly odd. Martinez is someone who likes to release the ball quick when he can. He's overthinking it whether by instinct (because of how vulnerable we are in transition) or by tactics (being asked to keep the ball better etc). As soon as we were a goal down, he started passing much faster, carried the ball and picked a few passes in between the lines.

I'm surprised by how match ready Malacia seems after being out so long but it's evident, he's still lacks sharpness and sometimes overestimates his ability. He's quite nimble on the ball and has good awareness but a half turn, feint or hesitation isn't enough to buy him half a yard of space when the opposition is on top of you. If he can return to the level he showed in the first year, I'd be happy but still wanting to see more productivity going forward.

Man Utd 0:3 Bournemouth New
Why does he keep bringing him in. Every game he's looked miles off it and gone off on 45 minutes.

Enough now he's done at this level, he was average anyway.

I think we can break even on him. Small outlay. But he's too slight to cut it in the league and there's no upshot, like blistering pace or high technical ability. He's so easily brushed off and then he can't match his opponent for pace. I don't think this is something that will come with match fitness.

But we've already bought a 17 year old and actively in the market for a starter there, so I'd be surprised if Malacia and Shaw aren't both shown the door next summer.

Surely Garnacho would be better in this position. At least it's something going forward. Malacia is way off it

Be ruthless and sell him off, even if it's for a pittance. Stop allowing guys to just hang around the place when they offer nothing.

In his first season he was okay for a new and fairly young player. Some good games (against Salah for example) but also some games where he wasnt good. He was not a wonderkid when he signed but he had potential to atleast grow into a squad role. I dont think he will ever be good enough for a squad role now. He missed over a year of football and development and i dont think he is good/talented enough to make up for that. He was never super quick but now he looks quite slow at times. He looked afraid to play certain balls forward, although he did play those balls later during the game and he doesnt exactly lock down the player he is defending. He also is not that good on the ball so the LWB role doest really suit him either.

He was a okay 'punt' but i dont think he should be a Manchester United player in the near future.

He is so far from the required level I wouldn’t even consider him part of the squad. Send him out on loan somewhere and try and move him on in the summer.

That injury was clearly going to have taken a huge toll and him and he needs to rebuild his career at a lower level.

No really. People are way too harsh on him. He just came back from an injury, but looks full on energy, links up well and tries to go forward.
I don't know in this instance. I watched PSV - Feyenoord.

I can't imagine he was worse than Feyenoord today :(

The player performance forum is fantastic.

I didn't say he is necessarily terrible. But just like a U-17. Tenacious, works hard, like trying to prove himself. Yet his almost always behind the game or out of position. Unfortunately, he is 25, not 15. And continues to offer next to nothing going forward. Of course, he isn't a wing back and was out for a long time. But what he is showing isn't significantly different than before his injury. I just don't think he cuts it at this level. But he didn't cost 80 million, so it's fine in that sense.
