Transfer Tweets - Summer 2017 | Keep it on topic

Not sure if you've heard the Amoyal podcast where they spent a fair few minutes on United (Pilib de Brun was featured). Some of the things they mentioned:

1. United have been preparing for months
2. The club has contacted at least 25 players this window working on various scenarios
3. Separate lists were made assuming we'd be in EL vs assuming we'd make the CL
4. Plans were affected and we've had to change targets at times
5. Belotti was ruled out on price after at one time being ahead of Morata on our list - but now we're looking at Morata primarily
6. Perisic was initially on List 2 (Europa) but got elevated - probably because of the Griezmann situation
7. We are continuing to work on a bunch of targets all at the same time and nobody really knows where we are on any aspect as info is not available

In this light, there's a good chance that we have indeed contacted in some manner a large number of the players we're linked to constantly. There's no reason to believe we have not touched base. Whether we are serious or not, can't say. That said, look around. Virtually no club has been making big signings (Bernardo Silva is not - yet, at least, worthy of classifying as a big signing). The market at the top end generally sees moves happen rapidly after the first couple of moves are made and I think everyone's just waiting for that to occur. That's also what will set baselines for price, so it's no surprise as sellers watch the "market rates" and continue to hold out for as high an amount as possible in the hopes that the baselines will be high and buyers remain wary and hold back waiting for lower floors to become apparent.

That's also probably why United in particular are holding back. If we were to sign Perisic for 50 Mn, it's virtually certain that the Morata price won't fall by much (if at all) while other prices will also be staggeringly high. Business logic...

It is interesting that no big names have moved yet this summer. Sanchez is still at Arsenal, Lukaku hasn't moved yet, Bellotti hasn't been sold either.

If we had bought Griezmann I'm sure the subsequent transfers would've been a bit different.

This is a terrible Summer window... how the fuk is Inter holding us up for ransom with Perisic? You got to feel the likes of Bayern would have had Perisic wrapped up already.

I don't understand why anyone thinks that Inter have to cooperate with a club trying to buying one of their players. We have to pay a price Inter are happy with or the interested club can sod off.

United have a tradition of brinksmanship almost every summer. Usually what happens is that another club shows interest late on and pay the price and get the deal done while, we rue another over-elaborate piece of negotiation.

They can feckin keep him for that price. Couldn't care less about him coming or not.

@midnightmare just curious but was Fabinho mentioned?
Yup. Was indeed. Said it was "very risky" to replace Carrick with just Matic as just a single injury could leave the team very exposed, so there could well be 2 DMs signed to ensure Paul Pogba could be freed. So, the two (de Brun aired this view and Amoyal agreed) feel it could well be 2 DMs; and they did say United has definitely spoken to him and are interested.

For the record, de Brun also said:
1. The window may not be going as well for United as needed since Woody sounded "snippier than usual" when he spoke to him a few days ago
2. Jose could even quit if he doesn't get the players he wants since he's been working on this for months
3. It's "desperate" for Woody to do well - though he's "not normally the type to go in and start throwing money around"

Interesting talk overall.

I'll be honest I don't know how anyone apart from Jose, Ed and a select few from within the club would know who was on the list.

I'm not entirely sure why we'd have two lists either: is the thinking that we'd be buying inferior players if we didn't make CL? Why would we do that, surely our revenues wouldn't be affected that much.

I do understand we've probably contacted lots of players, and so people have pieced lists together from information that's come out. There's just too much conflicting detail for most of it to be correct.

I'm absolutely convinced we've never been in for him or we'd have signed him weeks ago.

Di Marzio seemed to take a bit of a Luke-warm punt based on information possibly received from Juventus. Bouhafsi possibly just went along with that info too.

There's just not been enough solid talk or movement.
Both reported you made a bid. That's all. Don't remember them saying you had agreed terms with the player or anything

I'm now beginning to believe that Jose aren't interested in Fabinho at all. If he is, this would have a deal simply concluded quite quickly. The player welcomes a move and his club doesn't want to sell to their major league rival

Is there another Kante in the PL we can't find other than Dier and Matic?

We already have one in Ander Herrera. I was reading recently that his stats were better than Kante.

Yup - am quite certain it's also because everyone's waiting for a baseline / reference to get set. Far easier for the later sellers to negotiate. Always the case.
As for Griezmann, sigh... such a blooming pity!

Like when everyone reported we'd pay 110 Mn for Pogba and we kept chipping away until we paid just 89? Or maybe when we bought Mkhi? Don't go back to the Hazard and Moura transfers please. Too long ago and with no overlap of personnel involved there.

I'm not entirely sure why we'd have two lists either: is the thinking that we'd be buying inferior players if we didn't make CL? Why would we do that, surely our revenues wouldn't be affected that much.

Why? It's not like this is FM where having money means you can get what you want. It's not like the best players would queue up to join Derby County if they suddenly got taken over by a willing-to-spend Qatari billionaire.
1. If we hadn't made CL, it's likely the top targets would not have wanted to move to us; everyone knew that was the case with Griezmann for example; so you do indeed need to plan your lists.
2. There are no "conflicting" reports if you rely on the good sources. It's just people like Luckhurst who are spouting nonsense that lead to this impression. Nobody said we'd "agreed" a deal for Fabinho. They said we'd asked and were interested. Nothing so far would indicate otherwise.

Both reported you made a bid. That's all. Don't remember them saying you had agreed terms with the player or anything

Yup. Can't recall either saying we had agreed terms. Instead, I do recall a Fabinho interview where the interviewer had to prompt him to even get him to agree that Mourinho was a manager he'd like to work with. So while I'd like to see us get him, I'm not getting my hopes up. Our chasing players is not similar to Real Madrid making eyes at their targets...

So are we making lists simply assuming players won't want to join us if we don't have CL football? Why not just have one list and see who wants to come and who doesn't?

Eh? Is he talking about the guy from Toy Story?

I like Pilib, and think he gets too much stick on here, but he was been a bit of drama queen here with the quit quote, if needs be I can see Jose cranking up the pressure on Woody when he gets back, but the talk of quitting was just for effect imo, and the way Amoyal kept agreeing with every word he said was a bit too much as well, also not sure why Pilib would have any need to exchange emails with Woodward as he said.

Personally think we'll see a lot happen in this coming week, as seems fairly obvious.

Yup. Echoed what I feel. Will get clearer this week.

Good post. I can well see the logic in all of this but surely a good pre-season has to be a priority. We aren't changing manager like last year, the squad know Jose now so it's about strengthening for a real go at the league. Jose is renowned for his fast starts and we need signings sorted asap if that's to happen.

edit: meant to quote your original post about the radio show and long list

Is there a a problem with Jorge Mendes, i haven't seen deals with any of his players?

I can only assume he is peeved with our reluctance to sell DDG but apart from that kinda worrying all his players are refusing tp sign for us!

Following this day in, day out it's clear basically no one knows what's going on behind the scenes. I'm sure Mou and Woody are laughing their butt off.
I agree. The only one I am certain about is Morata because of his wife and her Instagram. The rest could just be agents, clubs using us to create interest. We will have to wait and see.

If you are using Instagram as a scale, Fabinho's wife also liked to a picture last week of him in a United jersey.

I take anything de Brun says with a massive grain of salt. He may know certain things based on his sources with the club but there's also this feeling that he fills in the blanks with anything that's missing in order to have something to publish for his social media followers.

Just realised that the Phil Brown they mentioned on the podcast was this de brun guy. Wouldn't have paid it so much attention had I have known.

This is a brilliant post.

The highlighted bit makes a lot of sense.

Also, I posted a few days ago that Jose hates leaks in his teams. I can imagine how much he would have discussed, with Woodward and everyone else concerned, about the need to cut down on info going out regarding our recruitment plans.

We already have one in Ander Herrera. I was reading recently that his stats were better than Kante.

Ander is not a DM. People need to stop classifying him as one. He can do a decent job playing the role when the need arises but he should not be made to play the DM role as his primary job.
