He's set us back twice as many years as he managed us

Did he negotiate the financial terms and length of the contract ?

ETH deserved to be sacked but so much of the criticism he still receives is unfair.

True. Strange to blame ETH for Rashford's contract. Plenty of the blame can and should be redirected towards the likes of Woodward and Arnold.

Most of the time he's been at UTD he has been average & that's being kind, keeping average players will not make us better.
Exercising Maguire's option seems... pretty wasteful? There's no way he's worth £190k a week, that's amongst the highest paid CBs in the league. If he's that good, why doesn't he start for us much of the time? I don't get why we couldn't negotiate £100k or £120k a week and save a few million.

Not overly against extending Maguire for a year. With Lindelof going that gives us Yoro/Maz, De Ligt/Maguire, Martinez/Shaw as the 2 options for each position. Replacing sicknote Shaw is the bigger priority over replacing Maguire imo, who we can replace summer 2026.

(Working on assumption Evans is going too)

Because negotiating a new contract on £120k a week would be at least a 3 year contract, so would cost £18.7m, as opposed to the 1 year extension costing £10m. Presumably we don't see him being here beyond summer 2026 so don't want to tie him to a long-term deal. Feel a bit ill now i've just worked out how much we're going to pay him either way. That much for a sub.

No, but he’s been happy to be squad player. His transfer fee is ancient history now. If we let him walk for free it costs us what £30-40m to get a backup CB who likely isn’t as good. We don’t want to have to sign two new CB’s next summer.

Replacing Maguire would cost far more than paying his wages for 18 months (£9.9M), why the hell would Maguire accept a lower wage?

Maguire has actually been pretty solid in this system, would I sign him now, obviously not, are his wages too high, obviously, but realistically there is no value in selling him as without extending his contract he leaves on a free in 5 months.

If we are having to find players for other position keeping Maguire for 18 months is a no brainer, if we didn't keep him we would haven to buy another CB in the summer, we may still buy another CB in the summer but this at least gives us options

He ultimately decided he wanted him to stay. Other plonkers messed up the rest.

Well he did score 30 goals so it wasn't entirely a disastrous decision for ETH, who had no other prominent goal scorers for most of his time at United, to want Rashford to kick on.

I agree a three year deal is not ideal (though I doubt that was required given his age; even Liverpool are trying to do a 1-2 year contract for Salah for goodness sake).

But also, look at what you just said. 1 year for 10M or 3 for 18.7M. The latter would be like getting 2 extra years of Maguire at 80k a week (8.7M over 2 years). Actually pretty reasonable! 190k a week is a gross overpay.

Why would Maguire accept a lower wage? Well, I presume because no one else would offer him near £190k a week in the summer. Which club do you think would do so?

Maguire is 32 in March. His extension will take him to the end of 2026 at 33yrs old.

Would we really want him at 34-35? Save the extra £8m and put it towards his replacement in summer 2026.

Eh? Are we allowed to just post garbage outlets?
The Sun is definitely a garbage outlet, but Martin Blackburn isn't the typical Sun writer. He does have his sources, but he's becoming less reliable just like Custis. Blackburn mainly focuses on City, but it seems like he's recently starting to write more about United, which can explain why he's become less reliable.

How often do we see these big swap deals happen though? Almost never. They’re always bandied about in the early part of the window and then by the end they never materialize.

I'm not taking that Sun report seriously. When I read over it, there was nothing substantial about any potential swap deal. There wasn't even a concrete mention of any talks between Napoli and Rashford's camp let alone Napoli and United. I wouldn't be surprised if Napoli are keeping an eye on Rashford's situation, but they've yet to make a move for him let alone start any work on a potential swap deal.

Agreeing to pay Maguire £190k per week for another year... yep, that sounds like us.
Over the last 18 months, name a centre back still at the club who has performed better over a three game period than Maguire.

The money is history, but he’s the best centre back at the club today.

It’s a terrible position to be in I agree because it means players we expected to be performing better are failing. The saddest part is when it comes to the chopping board, that Butcher guy is No1 on the list because all he does is help the opposition score now.

Delap had long been touted as a decent prospect but it kind of reminds me of Evan Ferguson a year or so ago. Scores a few goals and everyone lauds them. I get that Ferguson is younger but Delap hasn’t built up much of a record to say he’s worth a punt.

When Ipswich go down it might be a decent deal to do. Similar to Andre Robertson or Maguire was for Liverpool & Leicester.

Would target up and comers from all the academies of the top teams and hope we dont ruin them in their development before they can step into starting roles here. That would be a cheaper option to getting us back although may take some time.
