There are plenty of attacking fullbacks that exist in the market. Weird reason to justify AWB's renewal.

He's a below average footballer. You can't challenge for the league with someone as uncomfortable on the ball as him.

One underrated reason why we don't score enough is our shoddy fullbacks. Except hail mary crosses they offer nothing.

Shaw actually does offer quite a lot when he’s allowed to play left back, he scored 1 goal and 8 assists last season from 44 appearances which is 1 in 5 GA from left back and 6 of those games he played at left back, the rest I completely agree with it you they offer very little, full backs/wing backs in modern football are key because of the way the games evolved, Luke has great delivery, can play invert and control the game and is technically elite, the rest are really average in terms of numbers, none of them Mallacia, Dalot or AWB are offering the numbers you want from a modern full back but then again nor does Kyle Walker and most people think he’s the best right back in the World.

Say goodbye to ever getting a good fee for him if we raise his wages
ETH loves him and probably sees him as a Kyle Walker type that has pace to burn, comes into back 3 when we go 3-1-6 with new style of football and gets up and down the pitch all game, if only he had quality in the final third he would be world class but alas the ball is not and will never be his friend. I think if Dalot doesn’t develop into what we expected last season then no we need to go get an attacking right back in January.

He’s a decent defensive option. We need the attacking alternative that improves on Dalot. Frimpong and AWB would be good options to switch around depending on the opposition

Personally I’d buy Frimpong as he counts as HG like AWB does and move Dalot to back up Shaw with Alvaro Fernandes, I’d move T Mallacia out if we can get £20m for him. Five Full backs us about right with one utility able to play left or right which Dalot Can.

It's actually a huge reason we don't score. Poor production from our full back positions. Especially right back. That position has been a barren wasteland since AWB joined and he does not do enough defensively to justify his total lack of any kind of offensive contribution. He is very poor positionally and prone to mistakes on the ball in dangerous areas. He stops quick opposing wingers which is important at times but that is far too specific a role to justify being paid over £100k a week. We need a right back for all situations and all seasons and AWB will never be it. So why the hell is he being given a raise? Some are claiming it's to eventually give us more time to sell him. Because we've had clubs lining up around the corner for our overpaid mediocre players. Who was the last player we sold that went to blossom into a great player when he left? Yet the Caf swore up and down for the last 5 years that these players were good useful squad players.

P.S: To suggest he is anywhere near or even a Kyle Walker type is hilarious. He is not particularly quick and does not have 1/10th Kyle Walker's composure. I know Walker's an opposition player but please respect that man. AWB is not in the same universe.

I have just realized that the 3 players we have bought this summer is to replace the 3 positions we had loan players in last year. Last year we loaned Butland (GK), Sabitzer (CM/AM) and Weghorst (CF), and we have strengthened the team with Onana (GK), Mount (CM/AM) and Højlund (CF).

Since De Gea has also left we need another goal keeper to take the seat of Butland as Onana is to be the De Gea replacement.

If Fred is sold, as rumours are stating then we definitely need a replacement for him.

I think he showed some improvement but remain unconvinced by him in many departments. Hopefully to be proved massively wrong this season, and he really kicks on. Both him and Dalot both getting new deals is a bit weird to me.

I don't think his wages would make a sale prohibitive like so many others. But, I'm not sure of the numbers.

I think his dribbling, passing and ball retainment is underrated on red cafe. If we had someone with Rashford capability(on left) on right AWB would have excelled.
What he lacks is better crossing ability and some times ball-watching in defense.

Yeah definitely needs better crossing ability, ball watching has definitely improved since the mistake at Emirates leading to their equaliser

It’s a myth that he’s uncomfortable on the ball. What he lacks is perhaps decision making on when the cross and when not to. But considering we’ve played pretty much without a striker for the last year we can’t blame it all on the fullbacks when they have no one to aim for in the middle

in his first season at United 19/20 he assisted 4 goals
20/21 he had 6 assists and 2 goals
21/22 season was a dud not just for him. 0 assists
Last season, against all odds he fought his way back in, creating 1 assist but looking much better than people expected tucking into midfield.
im predicting a good season from him this coming season

Kyle Walker is considered a good attacking fullback - in his career he has 8 goals and 40 assists - in over 400 matches. Zinchenko is just behind Walker in his numbers pr game played. 1 goal and 9 assists in 100 matches (once again for teams scoring more goals than AWB)

Wan Bissaka has 2 goals and 14 assists in 200 matches - which is just behind Walker and Zinchenko pr match played - generally playing for a team scoring a lot less goals than Zinchenko and Walker. Does that mean they are shoddy fullbacks since they scored and assisted in so few goals ?

Aaron Wan Bissaka will never be Robertson and TAA - but nor will he ever be so poor defensively that he had to be moved into midfield simply because he cant defend. But you are attacking AWB because he doesnt match the numbers of Robertson and TAA, despite his numbers not being much worse than Zinchenko and Walker to compare him to 2 highly respected fullbacks. You are also ignoring the fact one of the main reasons Liverpools fullbacks have been so successful (in addition to them of course being really good attacking fullbacks) is a) They have had lethal strikers in Salah, Mane, Firmino, Jota etc to boost their numbers - we have not had those strikers. and b) Liverpools fullbacks are playing much higher up the field than any other teams fullbacks - because Liverpool have sacrificed attacking contribution from 2 midfielders (usually Henderson, Fabinho or Thiago) to allow their fullbacks to attack. This means that their fullbacks will get more points, whereas their central midfielders hardly got any. In other words - Klopp played to his fullbacks strengths. If we tell Casemiro and Eriksen (or Bruno) to sit deep all the time and move Shaw and AWB 30 yards higher up the pitch - yes we would get more points from Shaw and AWB. But I doubt that is what ETH wants.

Great post.

I'm not AWB's biggest fan, but a bit of context is needed before we shit all over AWB. We all know he has shortcomings, but he has improved them slightly in one season with Erik. So being HG probably saves him, but replacing him would probably cost more overall than just renewing him - even though I'd be in favour of selling him.

AWB is decent, but if Pavard is available, we should be in for him and offload either AwB or Dalot.

I dont think Kyle Walker is considered a good attacking fullback. But his build up play is great. Same with Zinchenko. AWBs build up play is his biggest weakness.

Ach now come on. Kyle Walker is one of the best to ever do it and in a different set up would be a brilliant attacking right back.

Exactly the criticism isn't about his g/a, its his overall technical level otherwise Shaw will get the same criticism.

Yes we lose something going forward with AWB as a right-back - but we gain a lot defensively. No matter who we play, AWB will destroy the opponents left winger - in addition to being the best player to leave behind on an attacking set-piece, because 9 times out 10 he will win a 1 vs1 duel on a counter.

Without AWB starting - we played 20 league matches - 32 goals against last season
With AWB starting - the same numbers were 11 goals against in 18 matches :)

Or to put it like this - without AWB we concede 1.6 goals pr game - with AWB the same number is 0,61

And granted, there were more tough games in the matches he didn't start so the numbers are slightly misleading - but the difference is so huge with or without AWB, that can't be the only explanation. He simply is so much better at defending than Dalot, it's worth losing that extra quality going forward.

He can definitely be more consistent but I think he has a decent cross when players are in the box. Concentration is his biggest issue for me in general. When he is on it, he’s on it.

A DM more important than a CB for me, I really hope Donny and Fred leave asap so we can get Amrabat in.

Great if true, but would personal terms really not be an issue? I thought that was a major stumbling block.
It was never a stumbling block.

That whole fantasy was concocted out of thin air by the usual Maguire haters who tried to characterise him as greedy or arrogant or whatever, just so they could have another thing to hate about him.

If they couldn't smear him with a reality, they'd smear him with a fantasy. Either way, the important thing was to smear him.

He wants to play CB, not RB.

Pavard is a worse defender than Wan Bissaka, and even worse than Dalot attacking wise.

The guy cries because he wants to play CB, but to be honest he would even be behind Maguire in the pecking order.

Ok when you play 3 at the back but he's a mediocre RB and an average CB.

30M for Maguire,
35M for Mc Tominay,
10M for Fred,
20M for Henderson,
5M for Bailly
Loan VDB,

You earn 100M and "save" around 30-35M of wages.

I didn’t even bother with comparisons because the guy doesn’t want to play at RB, whilst the poster suggested we get him to replace Dalot. I don’t understand the cafe’s love for Pavard. Severely overrated.

Tapsoba is a beast, I'd prefer him to Todibo personally.

I've only heard of Tapsoba as he's been linked to Spurs. How does he play? Todibo sounds like a good fit, in terms of being comfortable on the ball.

AWB is a great full back - he was fantastic in the League Cup final when he came on (and Dalot was strugging) and he's got more freedom in his role now. He was popping up at left wing a few times! Also his ability to win the ball high up the pitch is a massive asset for us - I'm certain we'll see a much more ruthless and attack minded AWB next season, and it'll be down to the coaching and confidence EtH has given him.

Rather we sign another CM then a replacement CB for moment.

Still think were going to get caught out when Casemiro is not available

I'm fairly certain we'll sign both.

Haven't we basically already got a CM lined up? Surely it's feasible that we grab a CB in addition to that now that Maguire is on his way out.
