Providing the weekly wage isn't all that high then this renewal is fine, him already being here 4 years out of an initial 5 year deal means that a reasonable fee for him will be around £25mil-£30mil which someone in the PL will pay.

EtH has done wonders to rehabilitate his reputation and will probably use him in games where he can further that this year, if the chance to sign a quality RB presents itself then I don't see us passing it up next year and if this renewal goes ahead then we have protected the resale value of two players (including Dalot) that 90% of teams would have an interest in and we don't need to worry about pricing them out of the market either.

It's the sensible version of what Woodward and judge thought they were doing basically.

Yeah clearly Erik hasn't found that all round RB who fits his system yet

I'd take that but we have been linked to other midfielders recently (Goretzka, Tyler Adams, Onana (Everton one).

Whether they are alternatives to Amrabat or in addition to Amrabat remains to be seen but my point was we don't exactly know the managers plans, maybe he sees Mctominay as a key member of the squad and the reason why we want 45 million for him is because ETH would want a replacement if we do choose to sell him.

Personally I'd be happy to keep Hannibal and Mainoo and not sign an additional midfielder to replace Mctominay.

EDIT: Just seen this maybe this is the reason why we're keeping Hannibal.

I understand not wanting to sell him now but I would have thought it's worth sending Hannibal out on loan. I can't see him playing many games and I don't think there is a clear pathway into the team so I think it's probably better for him to play regular football elsewhere.

But our young ones are going for free or 1m pounds or so. Thats the difference. We are even struggling to get a 20m fee for Henderson!
You’re comparing a market a few years ago to todays market where clubs are trying to realign to FFP

Decisions like Wan-Bissaka renewal (of course not confirmed yet) are just another indicator of why we should continue to question the hiring, retention and sales part of our squad management, despite everyone assuring us that its rosy, the right people are all in charge, that they're master negotiators with good instincts who definitely won't miscalculate by leaving us with overpaid squad detritus for the sake of a couple of million right now in transfer fees...
Ok now you’re just talking nonsense. Why wouldn’t we renew our first choice RB? You want him to walk for free? Buy some logic

Source (Tier 2):

Manchester United target Jean-Clair Todibo
  • Discussions with Nice and the defender's entourage
  • The Reds Devils are waiting for Harry Maguire to be sold before taking action. West Ham have stepped up their interest in HM and hope to complete the transfer.
  • Manchester United have asked Nice about the conditions of the deal.
  • Nice's sporting director, Florent Ghisolfi, recently stated that Todibi isn't "nontransferable".

Pretty sure we have an option to extend his contract by another year so we wouldn't be letting him leave on a free.

It’s a good sign that the coach has made up his mind on him, good enough for me. One of our most improved last season imho

If we've started negotiations for Todibo it's looking good for us in regards to getting 35 mill for Maguire.

Todibo and Amrabat in
Maguire/Fred/DVB out
we'll be in a title race imo.

The Caf knows more than the manager. AWB isn't Dani Alves so he's shit.
That's another can of worms - because he's good, but not peak Dani Alves/i.e. world-class, shouldn't we be looking for someone who is? Both Dalot and AWB are good, but neither are world-class. So, we could try selling both, then buy a quality RB and use Jurado as backup?

Yeah, I'm not even adverse to extending AWB for another two years or something- it's the talk of entirely new contracts on increased salary which is concerning in the context of past renewals. Can he reasonably expect to get better money than what he's on at present, short of the Gulf states? That should be a major, if not necessarily sole, consideration behind any 'increase'. I think we should also be looking to upgrade to a fully modern, versatile right-back who can link up with RFW a bit more consistently than Aaron, though he has admittedly got better, whilst playing with Antony has brought its own challenges.. Finding the closest version we can to someone like Reece James might be one 'ideal profile'.

Yeah, I think if EtH is regularly picking AWB this season then we can conclude that he's happy with the club extending his deal and that he sees him as part of his plans for the squad for the foreseeable.

I think people need to shake these negative feelings towards AWB, probably stemming from being bought by Ole, and some poor form during a period where the team was a shambles. The truth is he's a young lad that stood out at Palace, has delivered some truly excellent performances in 1 v 1 battles against top opponents, and is certainly young enough still to develop into what the coach needs.

He's not a crock either, so it's unfair to think extending his deal will just play out in the way it has with Jones/Bailley/Martial. Even if we're a bit scarred by those extensions.

AWB getting a new deal baffles me a little bit.
his tackling stats are off the chart. i always wondered why he's stuck at full back when a more central position might suit him better

Positioning. He's been caught out on tracking the flight of crosses and attacking runners around him a few times in the past. Not that he can't learn, up to a point.

I think he showed some improvement but remain unconvinced by him in many departments. Hopefully to be proved massively wrong this season, and he really kicks on. Both him and Dalot both getting new deals is a bit weird to me.

They're both young sellable assets. And our top two right fulls. If you're not selling them then you need to keep them on contract. And selling everyone just isn't an option.

His positioning isn’t good enough and the last thing you want from a center back is them diving in all over the shop.

He gets caught wrong footed a bit, but that could be down to the lack of control we have on games. If not then it would be worse centrally.

He’s a decent defensive option. We need the attacking alternative that improves on Dalot. Frimpong and AWB would be good options to switch around depending on the opposition

his positioning can't be that bad if his tackles are successful, and they usually are. it's his ball retention and passing aren't up to the standards of most full backs though, so maybe playing him further forward to break down the opposition press might be an option. Either way, i'm ok with AWB staying on - i think he's got a lot more improving to do.

Sounds like our stance with Mount. Assuming Maguire wants to go and doesn't have other options he prefers, fully expect him to be a West Ham player.

The renewal will also include an increase on his current "£100k/week" salary.

Not happy with this at all. Still one of the biggest problem areas in our squad. Even if AWB has improved, he still limits us massively imo.

Who is this unicorn world-class, fully modern, versatile right-back, Dani Alves/Reece James clone available for purchase? AWB is fine despite the hysterics.

Dunno, but one Reece James exists, for one, so conceivably there's at least another one similar. Doesn't have to possess all of Dani Alves' characteristics, or indeed be a total match for James (he just seems like a good model in terms of technical ability, positional intelligence, speed, strength, adaptability etc). We've got teams of scouts - maybe we can find one? AWB's ok in the interim, but there's a reason why people question him still above and beyond the usual fan grumbling where every player has a slump or two or just a weak spot

Frimpong or Mazraoui who already played under ETH are 2 obvious ones straight away that would offer much more than either of our current rbs. Even Hakimi might not be out of the question considering PSG seem to have completely given up on their superstar project.

Isnt Hakimi being investigated for an alleged rape?

There’s your issue.

I actually quite like AWB but I’ve spent the best part of the last decade hearing how Maguire, McTominay & Fred are ‘fine’, which in todays game isn’t good enough.

We’ll be ok for the season but that position will require addressing next Summer imo if we are to excel there as we do on the other side when Shaw can be arsed.

There are plenty of attacking fullbacks that exist in the market. Weird reason to justify AWB's renewal.

He's a below average footballer. You can't challenge for the league with someone as uncomfortable on the ball as him.

One underrated reason why we don't score enough is our shoddy fullbacks. Except hail mary crosses they offer nothing.
