Are people dismissing Ben White based on his ability or just because he's English and costs alot ala Maguire?
He played a whole season for Brighton in the PL and didnt look like a 50m defender. Still young though and he is supposed to be talented

I get that Arsenal can't attract biggest players at the moment, but £50m should allow them to be in race for someone like Torres and convince him to play for them purely because of financial perspective.
Torres isnt going to sign for no Europe Arsenal. Not with United and Madrid looking at him

Fair enough. I haven't seen alot of him so I can't really judge.

positive discrimination. if he was called ben black people would be claiming 50m was cheap.

Nordsjælland head coach Flemming Pedersen on Sulemana's current situation:
The last thing I have heard is that Kamaldeen has to choose from the options he has, and he has had to do so for a while. So it’s up to him, and I think he is in the process of investigating a little different things, and he would like to visit some places and so on before he makes his final decision. I do not expect him to play here, even though nothing has been decided, but I expect him to accept one of the offers he has on hand.

Apparently, Sulemana is making his choice between Manchester United and Ajax.

Guess the idea is to have a ball playing defender at the back that will shoulder some of the creative burden. Its got Arteta written all over it, so at least we'll get to see Arteta get the sack if he flops.
Maybe, but surely Ben White is not even the best option on the market? There are a lot of great ball-playing central defenders in Europe for similar price - bet someone like Andersen, Ginter, De Vrij give you same thing but for less money.

Throw good money at him (which Arsenal clearly have) and he'll play for them. Ben White is promising CB, but when you can spend that kind of money, you can go more ambitious route for a CB with European experience.

United did similar thing in LVG and Jose era.

These 3 players are the definition of average deadwood that we've tried to clear for the last 3 summers. No need to get new ones in.

I was thinking more that he'd be more highly rated if his name was Benjamino Bianco and he played for Atalanta.

Despair and confusion. Can't score a goal to save our life, blow 50M on a CB :wenger:. I know Luiz needed to be replaced but yeah don't see the urgency in this one.
They must be very very very confident of securing other more important targets...

Dunk is their best defender and I'm glad they arent signing him. He would have been a dominant player in defence.

The issue for Arsenal and White is the transfer fee which he will have to deal with every time he makes a mistake. However on paper it's the right type of profile - good on the ball, has leadership qualities, physically adept, has been coached by two real tacticians in Bielsa and Potter and has experience of the lower league which will stand him well.

The opposite is true! Farmers league, slow ball, no good. €20m max.:wenger:

I don't know, Arsenal have already got burnt going the European route with Mustafi. Maybe the idea is to go for someone closer home even if it means paying a premium. Sort of the way Utd overpaid for Maguire but got a genuinely good CB. I'd say Maguire is a 50m CB and White is a 30m CB with the english/reliability premium.

Someone in other thread commented on this being a weird sentence too.

Am I the only one who found it a perfectly normal sentence?

I think he could have just worded it differently, like "the big day is upon us" or something like that.

Agreed, also at 23 he could still improve considerably.

£50mill for Ben White, jesus. Clubs should really stop buying English players, way too overpriced!

That wouldn't mean the same thing at all. He's basically saying the noises are all positive and there's no reason to believe it won't happen. He's not claiming it's going to happen today or tomorrow.

Wasn’t he supposed to be a really good prospect a couple seasons ago?

Was it Stoke he played for?
Both are correct. He's still a good prospect, but he went under the radar once Ben White came to the fore along with United showing greater interest in targets outside of England.

What are you even on about? AC Milan literally just paid half of that for one of the best defenders in Serie A last season who's a black brit...

The fee is objectively crazy regardless

This is a case of Arteta imagining seeing something very special in him that no one else can see. And a case of Arsenal bying into Arteta being a super intelligent young manager. Also that no one else can see.

I was just mucking about, playing on the "big day" Redcafe joke.

This has been the slowest Chelsea window I can remember. Linked to Hakimi, with no bid… that is it. I guess the priority is to sell dead wood.

Double inception right there from Arteta.

David Luiz + Mavropanos out could be why they're getting Ben White. We might also see a bigger role for William Saliba if this is the case.

Woooosh

Edit: Just seen your reply. You're normally quicker than that.

feck me that's a great deal for Stuttgart. Mavropanos was really good in the second half of the season for them, getting him for 5m max is a steal.

It really is. That's an absolute bargain for them. That contract better have a large enough sell-on clause to make up for such a low fee. I can see Mavropanos doing well enough to attract bigger teams in the future.
