Music The Ultimate Metal thread.

I think i really need to listen to Carolus Rex ASAP

If you take it for what it is rather than comparing it to their earlier albums and bang on about it being generic power metal, then it becomes clear that it's a well-written concept album, as true as it can be to historical facts about one of Sweden's most prominent military era.

Sabaton are great. Art of War is a superb album, and the rest of them are very good as well. They've got a good cover of Rammstein's Freur Frei (probably spelt that wrong) as well.

I think i'll be able to get past the narrow minded view of it without much bother really. I've heard their first two albums and really liked both and obviously heard a few of their other songs here and there. I'll give it a whirl at some point, although i want to go through all of their stuff really because of how much i liked those first two albums. Saying that, i want to give Amon Amarth's Twilight of the Thunder God album a listen too at some point. SO MUCH MUSIC SO LITTLE TIME!

i got this in a couple of weeks...

It's bloody great, aye. Probably their most consistent album.
I'd say that distinction still belongs to their debut album Once Sent from the Golden Hall. Ride for Vengeance, Without Fear, Abandoned, Amon Amarth and the insanely epic Victorious March, all incredible songs. Especially Victorious March, you could throw whatever superlatives you could think of at it and still don't do it justice. If that song doesn't get you pounding your fists in the air and screaming along, no song ever will.

That said, With Oden on Our Side is fecking awesome. Death if Fire is always a blast live. I'd consider Amon Amarth a very consistent band throughout their entire career. Even their lesser albums are just consistently decent to good instead of ranging between horrible and great like you get with many other bands.

Sabaton is probably my favorite band at the moment.
I love all their albums, but Carolus Rex is definately one class above the rest. Not that it's suddenly very complex or anything, but musically it is much more interesting. It's a great live band as well. If you have the chance to see them, definately do. I've gone to see them twice now and both times my voice was completely gone the day after. Their live DVD of the Swedish Empire Tour is also worth checking out. Performing in front of 700.000 crazy Poles:

They're bringing out a new album this spring by the way. The first one since most of the band members were replaced.

I think i really need to listen to Carolus Rex ASAP

Their own music is completely different than Amon Amarth though. It's power metal, without any grunting. But don't let that stop you :)

I know that, i've listened to their first two albums. I'd also say that power metal is probably my favourite genre of metal too so it's all good in the hood ;)

I thought the Sabaton members left before Carolus Rex? Sure when I was looking through their albums recently in my quest to see if they'd made any songs that I'd mised (like Japanese bonuses, that sort of thing), the names under that album were different.

The old members have teamed with the excellent Nils Patrik Johansson to form Civil War, by the way. Their debut album (The Killer Angels) is good stuff.

Yes, most of them have left. All were replaced except frontman Joakim Broden and Par Sondstrom. The members that left apparently couldn't motivate themselves in the same way as Broden and Sondstrom could and didn't want to give themselves 110% for the band. The new members are supposed to be better musicians as well I've read. But we'll see how their next album pans out.

I'll have a listen to Civil War as well then.

Wasn't sure whether to post this here, or in the B-Sides/Songs that didn't make the cut thread. What the bloody hell is this not doing on an album?

When Tobias Sammet gets his shit together he can write the best power metal songs. Judas at the Opera should indeed have been on something like Hellfire Club or The Scarecrow (Avantasia). The lyrics are hilarious and constantly catches one off-guard.

Ahh the glorious 90s..

Probably the best riff in metal, probably..

Solid choices. Slaughter of the Soul was an insane album, and Carcass' Corporeal is an amazing riff.

I'd add something from Death

From the 1998 album, The Sound of Perseverance, by the amazing band Death. RIP Chuck Schuldiner

Agalloch, great band from Portland. This is the Mantle, absolutely awesome sound.

Amorphis, from Finland. This band has massively progressed through time. Have a look (listen?) at Black Winter Day, or Magic and Mayhem from the good old days. From recent times, Silent Waters was a fantastic album. Here it is for your pleasure:

Granted they sound like Pink Floyd now, Anathema was once a great metal band. Crestfallen, Serenades and the Silent Enigma are superb albums (Lovelorn Rhapsody is possibly the best doom love song ever?). Eternity and Judgment are good albums, just not metal.

Here's a sample from the Silent Enigma

As an aside, Darren White (former vox for Anathema) setup Blood Divine with COF- a couple of good albums, but he was more a poet than a musician. Here's a sample

Burzum... Not up to date with Varg's church burning endeavors, but Filosofem was good, in an insane kinda way. Dunkelheit!!!

Before he became a cartoon character, Glenn Danzig was capable of writing some amazing music

Dark Tranquillity and the Swedish Melodic Metal aka the Gothenburg scene. Still think The Gallery was their best album (Lethe, Punish My Heaven, Edenspring, Mine is the Grandeur/Of Melancholy Burning), The Mind's I had some amazing tracks (Insanity's Crescendo, Hedon), lost a bit of interest after Projector

DEATH, needs no introduction. RIP Chuck

Deicide, bunch of nutters, great guttural sounds and drums

Edge of Sanity - this is Dan Swano's (producer to some Katatonia albums, big influence of Akerfeldt). I recommend Crimson, 40 minute song (akerfeldt and a bunch of others sing in it)

Empyrium - amazing folk metal. I could walk 5 miles in the middle of the night in minus 30 Celsius listening to this shit.

Where At Night The Wood Grouse Plays

In Flames (see Gothenburg scene), Jesper Strömblad was an amazing virtuoso. Their shit these days is bland, but have a listen at Whoracle (and anything before).

Katatonia is one fckn depressive band. Ok Viva Emptiness was amazing,

but their earlier stuff makes me feel miserable. It's something in the music, that just cannot be explained.

discouraged ones and tonight's decision have some haunted melodies but take your antidepressants before you jump in

brave murder day has akerfeldt on vocals as renske completely blew up his chords - awesome album

Moonspell - some Southern Metal. Under Satanae, Wolfheart and Irreligious were great fun. Fernando Ribeiro has a bigger ego than Jose Mourinho though ;)

Recommend Opium, Awake and Full Moon Madness

My Dying Bride - one of my favorite bands ever. The first album I have purchased was Turn Loose the Swans, and what a sublime piece of music

Opeth - My favorite band. Morningrise and Orchid will never be topped.

Rammstein - Anyone that can write such music is okay in my book

Sepultura - love this live version

Arise is one of my fave metal albums

Theatre Of Tragedy were once a great band. Velvet Darkness They Fear is proof of that. Here's a sample, And when he falleth

Seriously from 4:00 onwards is pure bliss

Love Death for me TSOP is a pretty meh album. Apart from Spirit crusher and Behold the flesh i think it's pretty weak, and his vocals on this record annoy me. A bit too high pitched, and his guitar tone follows suit. Human or Symbolic are twice as good imo.

I think it has enough good moments on it. Spirit Crusher, Flesh and the Power it Holds and A Moment of Clarity all come to mind as killer tracks. It's not a patch on the crazy consistency of Human and Symbolic, but what album is?

Human is my personal favourite, and I also love those guys' other band Cynic and their slightly insane but brilliant record Focus. I even grew to love the robot vocals. Incidentally, the current Death (DTA) line-up is more or less the one from Human, so basically the same as Cynic. Cracking musicians.

A phenomenal display of technicality and progressive vision, topped of with a memorable solo at the end. Magnificent from start to finish.

Heh, some of my all time favorite bands are all passing by.
Opeth (although Blackwater Park will always be my favourite album), Theatre of Tragedy, Therion (Vovin and Theli are my favorites although I like Lemuria/Sirius B a lot as well), Anathema (even like their recent albums, Weather Systems was great, albeit no metal),...
Great stuff.

@Suedesi
And when he falleth...is probably my favorite TOT song. Together with the whole Aegis album. Liv Kristine's voice combined with the grunts and the music on those early albums was absolutely perfect. Too bad they decided to go into other directions with the band after Aegis.

Tiamat and Paradise Lost also deserve a mention in that list as far as I'm concerned:

Yes, I'm a fan of both :)

Any Testament fans? Had only heard The New Order before but loved Chuck Billy's vocals. Playing The Gathering atm, and it's great so far.

\o/ Their lastest effort, Dark Roots of Earth, is one hell of a ride. Queue it up.

Persuader are back after 8 years with the same line-up. Absolutely stoked!

I've played a few from their new one and youtube, love the punchy production.

Should i get that, the Legacy, or the Gathering?

Depends. The Legacy is pure old-school thrash, with a not-so-thick-and-punchy production. It's absolutely ripping and vicious though! The Gathering is thicker in production but the songs are weaker if you ask me. I think you can pick up The Legacy quite cheap and you should move on to DRoE. Shouldn't cost you more than £15 which is a fair price for two amazing albums.

Sounds good to me. What about The Formation of Damnation?

The Gathering is my favourite Testament album. TFoD is solid.

I'm all about properly brutal tech-death metal right now, but my least favourite aspect of it is those low-register cookie monster vocals, which are essentially a death-metal staple, unfortunately.

There's the odd band that use them in moderation and opt for more shouty/screamed vocals, like Revocation and Aborted, which I much prefer. I'm struggling to find more though. Anyone got any recommendations?

You might like Obscura, very technical death metal with slightly higher pitched vocals. Not shouty or screamed like your example, but certainly not Obituary style low growler either.

Cheers gents. Pretty much exactly what I'm after.

Psycroptic sound absolutely punishing. I love that. Full pelt through the headphones, it feels like someone is standing on my brain.

Obscura, less brutal, but the riffs are pure silliness. I felt like punching the air when that harmonised solo came in, but I didn't, quite wisely, as I was on the bus!
