Music The Ultimate Metal thread.

More doom. Soul-shattering stuff. At 5:50 and onwards there's some beautifully crafted music.

Always up for a thrash metal band that I haven't heard before. What CD do you recommend? Generally it's one of the first ones. Thrash in the late 80's and what have you.

As far as Death Angel goes, I'd say The Ultra-Violence and Relentless Retribution are essential. Not sure what other bands you've heard. How about Artillery? By Inheritance is a stellar album, one of the best I've heard from any thrash band.

Some more: Toxik - Think This, Lääz Rockit - Nothing Sacred, Agent Steel - Omega Conspiracy.

That should keep you busy for a while. :p

Late night snack for the melodic metal fans out there:

Urban Breed's vocal lines are some of the best and catchiest you'll ever come across. That chorus has been stuck in my head for two weeks now.

Massive thanks for posting this. Loved that song and am currently listening to Paradise Belongs to You. So far loving that as well. I'm a sucker for a good melo death band but only recently have I grown to like doom. Mostly because of my mate. Here's a song from his bands album (they have one of their albums on youtube as well).

Used to listen to White Zombie loads back in the day. In fact Electric Head pt II was part of my old bands set for a while.

Saw somebody recommend Saviour Machine in here a while ago (forget who it was, and too lazy to go back and check). Their first album is brilliant, especially the guitar intros to Ludicrous Smiles and Enter the Idol. There's a similar sort of guitar style in the verses of Carnival of Souls as well. I think it's using some sort of echo effect, but I'd love to know if there's a proper term for that style of playing?

Also, are there any other singers with Eric Clayton's vocal style?

I recommended them. They produced what I believe is one the best metal debuts to date. Intelligently designed music with a lot of substance in each department.

The term for the phenomenon is called slap back delay. Take Symphony X's early songs for some lovely bit of slap backing delays.

2:27:

As for Clayton's vocal style, it's unique. You do have old-school Symphony X (Allen era) that is somewhat reminiscent. Other than that, the great Midnight himself (though neither of them are seen as gothic vocalists):

If we stick to the same (gothic) realm as Saviour Machine, Tiamat's Johan Edlund comes closer:

Ah, I've heard of Johan Edlund via Ayreon. I'll check out Tiamat and Crimson Glory (already knew Symphony X). Cheers for that.

So some of you may know, HevyFest was cancelled this year because there was a dispute over the original venue. It was then rearranged to be a smaller event at Brixton Academy, which I was lucky enough to get a ticket to - I only wanted to see Sylosis, Hatebreed and Killswitch Engage.... then last week I was told that again, HevyFest had been cancelled, and they'd just try again next year instead. Safe to say I was pissed off

Then a friend of mine earlier this week heard about a smaller gig that was going to just be Hatebreed and Killswitch instead, and we managed to nab 4 tickets for it... about 30 minutes before Metal Hammer announced it on facebook/twitter and it sold out in pretty much no time at all.

feck yeah

Newest Summoning's album - 'Old Mornings Dawn'... So many musical layers and so many folk/fantasy motives with precise atmosphere that probably Tolkien, Martin and Sapkowski would be proud of.

Waiting so long (6+ years?) for the new album, I was really looking forward to it. At the first listening I was a bit disappointed but it gets better everytime I listen to it.
Still prefer Oathbound and Stronghold though. Some songs on those albums really stand out (Land of the Dead, Long lost to where no pathway goes, Where hope and daylight die...)

Totally agree. Stronghold was a genius album as a whole. The problem with today's black metal artists is that not many of them is heading where Summoning already is with this incredibly atmospheric approach to music, that's why we're forced to wait years for something of that awesomeness level.

You really have to dig deep into the obscure corners of metal to find quality atmospheric blackened metal. But when you do, you find some gems in the rough:

Saw Sabaton for the second time tonight.
Truly the best live band I ever saw. You can think of their music what you want (it's not the most sophisticated metal) but live they're absolutely amazing. Not that difficult with a born showman like Joakim Broden as your front man.

Trivium was great as well. Didn't really knew them before so they were a nice discovery tonight.

Death Angel releasing new album soon! Cannot wait.

Also, power metal candy! Cheesy name, cheesy as feck song, but feck me it's brilliantly catchy. It's fecking nuts and bang out of order, just like power metal should be; right back to the 90s.

Love some good cheesy power metal. Used to be massively into bands like Dragonland and Freedom Call. This Gloryhammer sound good too.

Speaking of power metal, Matt Barlow (formerly of Iced Earth and Pyramaze) has a new band, who have just released an album.

The album itself is solid enough. Nothing groundbreaking, but Barlow is one of my favourite metal singers, so for me his performance lifts the album up a level.

Sounds like the natural progression of Pyramaze if they had continued with Barlow at the front. Great song.

Gloryhammer are great! Their album is pure power metal cheese, great fun, great stuff all round!

A couple of my mates are in one of the bands that are supporting Gloryhammer on their tour at the end of this month, and keep raving about them.. I just assumed they were talking them up because they had to.. I didnt realise people actually liked power metal

Yup, it's easily my favourite kind of metal. I like that it irks you.

Speaking of Amon Amarth, their new album is good but a little bit lackluster. Some awesome song though

Twilight of the Thunder God is my favourite album.

Have some quality thrash from Essence. Including some very impressive bass playing on the first track.

 Irks is too strong for what I feel about people liking power metal, it doesnt bother me at all. I think apart from Keeper of the Seven Keys I have never heard a power metal album and thought 'wow this shit is awesome'. I think in general feels too optimistic, I like metal where it feels creepy, or like the band is really pissed off

That's perfectly fine mate, different strokes for different folks. I like to keep an open mind personally, so i'll try any kind of music. I mean, i used to fecking hate any kind of metal with screamy/growly vocals but now i quite often find myself enjoying some atmospheric black metal, or some downright awesome folk metal. It's all good baby.

Essence sound alright, remind me of kreator a bit.

Sentenced were are an awesome band for doom mental i think. the cold white light album was immense IMO.

Can anyone remember some gothic/dark songs which were posted here, just instrumentals iirc, could be thinking of a different site though, hard to check on phone heh.

I really need to get back into metal properly, I find myself just listening to the same metal when I want a motivating or a headbang :/ used to listen to around 3 new albums a day when I was 16  was a major metal head then though.

Power metal is such a varied beast. You can mix it with almost any style or influence and still produce something awesome that stays true to the concept.
