An era comes to an end as Nicko McBrain is about to sit behind the Iron Maiden drum kit for the last time in a few hours. His replacement has already been chosen and will be announced in the coming days. Meanwhile, it's always a pleasure to listen to the way he introduced himself:

feck. I didn’t know that he was leaving. This’ll be the first lineup change in the band in my lifetime, as the last was a month before I was born in January 1999 (when Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith returned to the band).

Piece of mind, my favourite.

Love you Nicko, happy retirement!

Sounds awesome. How were those concerts?
Mental. I was only 15! Mud as far as the eye could see, bottles of piss being thrown through the air with gusto, standing back-to-back to block the airborne missiles for your mate, and him for you. Being so SO knackered from standing in a field for 10 hours and then it all vanishing when Maiden came on!

From 1988 I remember Kiss who I guess were upset to be second on the bill trying to blow Maiden away and being pretty bloody good, but then still getting blown away by Maiden. What a set that "Seventh Son" headliners at Donington was! I seem to also remember Guns n Roses, Megadeth and Helloween. From 1992 I only remember Maiden being as immense as ever and everyone walking away when WASP came on despite there being nowhere to go! :)

Started listening to them again and they absolutely do not disappoint. Brilliant band

Don't listen to them often now, but used to love that album and Cause of Death. Got that real grimy old death metal sound, full of atmosphere.

Agree both of those albums rocked my world in my youth bought them both when they were released, loved them both. Started going through their catalogue again after seeing them live. Loved the show.

In honour of listing my Anacrusis and Coroner CDs for sale on eBay two absolute bangers:

I think the way Release segues into the chorus and that fantastic choppy riff kicks in, then the screams start, may be one of my favourites musical transitions of all time.

easily among my favourite cold weather albums, Celestite and Angels of Darkness, Demons of Darkness. they just work.

and to me, the latest Opeth album is probably the best new release since Mastodon's Hushed and Grim. zero complaints.

Of all people to have a guest spot on that new Opeth record, I wouldn’t have expected the singer from Europe.

I never really got used to them and they're are basically disbanded now, but somehow I always liked the album and this song in particular.

just two personal favorites from their only album I listened to in entirety.

I like paradise lost, just not that album. Everyone says it’s their best one but I just can’t get into it
