Music The Ultimate Metal thread.

Wow, thanks guys i'm overwhelmed by this response! I'm going to have a listen to all those songs when i get a bit of time to myself, probably will be around midnight i guess

I reckon i will shoot you a PM at some point Skywarden just for shits and giggles!

Also, thanks for your suggestions too King_Eric, i have actually already got three Blind Guardian albums, Sabaton's Primo Victoria and i am a massive Hammefall fan (they are kinda the band that got me into Power metal) although i have given their latest album, Infected, a miss as i heard one or two songs off it and was less than impressed. Still, always useful to listen to more!

Like i said, i'll be back in here later on once i've had a listen to all these songs. Thanks again!

EDIT: Oh, also, I listened to Rhapsody's Dawn of Victory last night and i really enjoyed it. I feel that Holy Thunderforce is one of the standout tracks though, i love the opening line 'Face me evil bastard'

Definately give Sabaton's 2 latest albums a try, Coat of Arms and Carolus Rex. Their best albums in my opinion, especially the last one. There's a Swedish and an English version by the way.

I agree with what you said about Hammerfall's latest album. Didn't like it too much as well.

This is one of my favorite bands. A genius mix of metal with many other influences. Although I can imagine they might sound a bit weird at first, just give it a try.

Yeah i'm definitely going to get on Sabaton's other stuff at some point, i've always enjoyed Primo Victoria.

I got a chance to listen to some of the stuff you guys suggested, i have to say that i've enjoyed it all so far. I've stuck most of the bands in a word document and i'm going to just work my way through and get a feel for the ones i want to explore a bit deeper. I've not had as much time as i'd have liked tonight (fecking daylight savings!) but this is all going to take me a looooong time anyways what with the massive number of suggestions you guys have given me! S'all good though, it's going to be a lot of fun! Thanks again guys, i'll post in here now and again as i listen to these bands and let you know what i think.

Anyone seeing Meshuggah in a few months? Still one of my favourite bands, even if they conceived this 'djent' bollocks:

Meshuggah themselves downplay the whole "djent" thing though don't they? I believe their guitarist coined the term, but they seem to distance themselves from the bands that now call themselves "djent".

It's certainly a strange 'genre' as every "djent" band I've heard other than Meshuggah are mostly awful. Someone told me 'Periphery' are one of the main "djent" bands. Totally horrid.

Nowadays it seems to mean "really digitally processed guitar sound" which just isn't for me. Tubes, man! Tubes!

Just listened to Finntroll's Nattfödd. I definitely enjoyed it, it really reminded me of Equilibrium and Ensiferum in some parts which is really what i was looking for in terms of Folk metal. I also found Wintersun through them and i'm going to give them a listen when i get a chance as i reckon they'll be right up my street as well.

Just going off to listen to Rhapsody's Dawn of Victory again now though. I usually try and give an album a few listens through rather then just one and done.

Not too big on Rhapsody, myself. They're one of those bands that I should like, but Fabio Lione's voice just doesn't do anything for me. The only song of their's that I bothered keeping was Magic of the Wizard's Dream, just because Christopher Lee sings on it.

Been listening to Opeth recently, in an attempt to get back into them. I know Blackwater Park is "the big one" in terms of their albums, but I really enjoyed Ghost Reveries.

That's fair enough, i'm picky enough with singers i like and dislike so i can see where you're coming from. He seems to do it for me though so i'm quite liking Rhapsody so far, he reminds me of Angra's singer (can't remember his name).

If you like Primo Victoria, try listening to "Van Canto"s version, first time I heard the song and thought it was class...

Power metal... has nobody yet mentioned Stratovarius?

Yes, yes they have.

That is acceptable then. I wish I could remember more of the bands I used to listen to, just keep on expanding. Just got tickets to go see "Blackmore's Night". Not metal, but sorta folky weird stuff

One band that I'm remembering for some unknown reason, The Old Dead Tree...

Been through Finntroll's Nattfödd again tonight and Rhapsody's Dawn of Victory again too, both are good albums and they were certainly worth repeat listens. I've also managed to go through Sonata Arctica's Ecliptica tonight as well and i definitely liked that too. Not sure i like it as much as Winterheart's Guild at the moment but it's still a good album, it might be another that needs a couple of listens before you fully appreciate it.

Had a blast through Eluveitie's Slania a couple of times over the last two days. It's very good, certainly what i'm looking for in Folk metal for sure. Other then that i've just been through the other albums i've told you guys i've been listening to on here (Nattfödd, Dawn of Victory, Ecliptica). I have to say, Ecliptica has grown on me a bit more. I still think i prefer Winterheart's Guild but Ecliptica is a properly good album and i'm very glad i decided to give it a listen.

Apart from Unia, I actually really like Sonata Arctica's later stuff (as in from Reckoning Night onwards). Probably more than I like the earlier stuff (not much more though, it's all good...except Unia).

Speaking of classics, I recall being crazy about Naglfar when I was younger:

Also, I know India has a massive Maiden fan base, but I didn't knew they were aware of how to write ass kicking heavy/thrash inspired songs like this....

Speed/power from Greece!

Nasty modern thrash from the States (love that name )

Picked up Testament's latest as I've heard good things about it. Ridiculously good. Almost 30 years and still going strong? They are having a laugh...

Speaking of classics, I recall being crazy about Naglfar when I was younger:

I remember they were considered a Dissection style band back in the day, and being an absolute Dissection nut I had to check them out. Saw them live at Wacken 2005 as well. Not bad but they never seemed to master tempo as well as Dissection. Almost every melody is hidden away by overwhelming blast beats or double pedal drumming. It's a shame, they had the potential to be more than that.

Does anyone like My Dying Bride? I never really paid much attention to them when I saw their stuff in shops because I assumed from their name they'd be a shitty emo pop-punk band... how wrong I was

Their last effort was a fantastic trip back to what made MDB truly inspiring. While we are floating inside the Gothic realm, listen to Saviour Machine - Saviour Machine I. Crimson Glory sounding at times - without the presence of Midnight. One of the best Gothic metal albums I've come across.

Jeff Hanneman of Slayer has died.

Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 - 2013)

I'm in shock right now, Slayer were the band that got me into metal, and have always been one of my go to bands. This has knocked the stuffing out of me. RIP Jeff

Real shame that, i wouldn't say i'm the biggest Slayer fan but i do have 4 of their albums so definitely do like them. RIP Jeff.

I know I'm late to the party, but how good is Phantom Antichrist? Killer riffs galore - having a blast with it. Perhaps not as furious (still furious enough for me!) as their older stuff, but on the other hand they haven't abandoned their integrity despite venturing into more melodic realms.

Speaking of which, 2012 was an immense year for thrash: Kreator, Destruction, Overkill, Testament, Hellbringer(!), Rezet, After Oblivion - all of them came out strong as hell. Testament with perhaps the best of the lot.
