Music The Ultimate Metal thread.

I remember that thread

They're very much the marmite of the metal world, though they've been picking up a lot more fans recently due to their cleaner sound. Gigging quite a lot these days too.

Just discovered this band, pretty awesome. Last fm is handy for one thing at least. :p

Great band. The Art of War album is just superb (if you ignore the narration bits, which piss me off).

Absolutely. It's my favorite album as well, together with this new Carolus Rex record. They seem to be getting better with the years.

Anaal are one of my favourite bands, made a thread about them awhile ago, didn't go well

Too niche my friend, it is hard enough to keep the Deftones thread afloat. I am listening to this album at the moment.

I hadnt listened to this in a while, I forgot how awesome an album it was

Mindblowing to consider they were all between 15-18 when it was recorded. Its literally the perfect death metal album

Studying with my metal playlist on random. This song comes one.

Instant hard on and loss of concentration. I just love this song. Don't know what makes it so special. If you break it down it's nothing special but it just works and has a good melody. Probably the guitar that does it so much for me.

Whoa. That's crazy good value. CD's here are so expensive. Especially if you buy metal. You can barely get a cd for less than 6 pounds.

I like Type O' Negative. Humorous lyrics at time. Steele was part Icelandic which is cool. They weren't half bad.

Go listen to Kreator if you haven't already. One of the most consistent bands out there, especially in the thrash genre where consistency hasn't been king.

Title track of what I think is their best album.

Yes, its amazing. Frank Mullen seems to have got his voice back as well, he sounds like he is genuinely doing death growls rather than the last album where he was sounding more like he just had a sore throat

Not had my finger on the metal pulse much over the past year or so, but this still stands out for me. Great record:

Anyone remember The Freezing Fog? They were Manchester lads too. More groove metal than most of the heavier stuff in here. Sweet riffs

After practically only listening to the last Sabaton album the last year, I decided it's time to listen to some other metal as well again :wenger:

I started to really appreciate Volbeat lately. Something quite different than the metal I usually listen to, but in some way really great to listen to. I don't even like punk, punkrock or rockabily, but this blend -which was coined 'Elvis-metal' by James Hetfield- is strangely addictive.

I liked that a lot, i got a kinda Megadeth vibe from some of those riffs. Very cool!

I've been listening to a fair bit of folk metal recently which i find awesome. Bands like Ensiferum, Equilibrium and, to a certain extent, Turisas. I think i'm going to give Eluveite a try too as i've heard some good things about them.

My other big love is power metal. I feel like i haven't listened to enough of it lately though and i think i ought to expand my taste here a little too. I'm going to try and get into a bit more of Sonata Arctica (I've only listened to Winterhearts Guild at the moment, although that is a fecking top album) and i also want to start listening to Rhapsody and Kamelot as i've heard good things about those two. I just listened to the song 'Holy Thunderforce' by Rhapsody actually and i liked what i heard there so i'm just off to listen to the album that song is on now.

Damn, i'm going to have plenty of bands to listen to and explore!

I'm also very pleased to see this thread is alive, hopefully we can keep it hovering around the first page!

Speaking of folk metal, if you haven't picked any of these artists up you should do it now!

In terms of power metal, there are a lot of stuff you need to check out. I'll drop some here and if you want more just PM me.

(Not even the best song from that album - a must buy.)

Seriously, I can go on all day and all year. As I said, just PM me if you want more.

All great bands. Definately give them a try. For Sonata Arctica, I'd suggest to start with their oldest albums. I like the latest two as well, but not everyone does.

Some more folk metal bands you might like:

Power metal:

Anybody here knows Summoning? Probably my favorite black metal band around. Unfortunately, they only release an album every 5 years or so.

epic stuff

They should be releasing a new album this year. The first since 2006.

Wow, thanks guys i'm overwhelmed by this response! I'm going to have a listen to all those songs when i get a bit of time to myself, probably will be around midnight i guess

I reckon i will shoot you a PM at some point Skywarden just for shits and giggles!

Also, thanks for your suggestions too King_Eric, i have actually already got three Blind Guardian albums, Sabaton's Primo Victoria and i am a massive Hammefall fan (they are kinda the band that got me into Power metal) although i have given their latest album, Infected, a miss as i heard one or two songs off it and was less than impressed. Still, always useful to listen to more!

Like i said, i'll be back in here later on once i've had a listen to all these songs. Thanks again!

EDIT: Oh, also, I listened to Rhapsody's Dawn of Victory last night and i really enjoyed it. I feel that Holy Thunderforce is one of the standout tracks though, i love the opening line 'Face me evil bastard'

Power Metal is my favourite kind of metal. Actually bought the Blind Guardian boxset that came out recently.

Apart from them, Sonata Arctica, Iced Earth, Sabaton and Edguy are probably my favourites. Can't go wrong with some Freedom Call either.

I hadn't picked up on that, but now you mention it, I get that too. They have 3 or 4 full lengths, and it's pretty much all along this sort of line. Definitely worth giving more of a listen. I think the Death/Thrash crossover is quite a tricky one. It can either sound a bit cheesy and forced, or it can be nailed, and Revocation really do nail it, in my opinion.

Loads of good stuff in this thread that I hadn't heard, or had completely forgotten about. Good job, chaps. Here's some stuff I'm digging right now:

Arguably more hardcore than metal, though it definitely has plenty of metal in there.

Bass metal. Serious grooves. Now the rhythm section of the Melvins!

Extremely underrated. Great production. That bass sound is just so badass. I'm a sucker for death metal without cookiemonster vocals.

Triumphant grooves. They really do run hot an cold this band, but then they nail it, they really do nail it!

Absolute silliness.

Not their best song at all, but the video is just incredible

One lesser known band I always recommend to people who like Folk Metal is Suidakra, in particular their 5th album Emprise to Avalon. It's not strictly Folk Metal but it's similar. The quality across their other stuff can be inconsistent but this is a killer album.

As for Power Metal, you owe it to yourself to check out Synergy. A band that somehow wasn't very widely known, even though some of the names involved were huge. Both Jesper Strömblad of In Flames and Alexi Laiho of Children of Bodom (like him or not, he's a fecking great guitar player) have done lead guitar parts for this band, with D'Angelo of Arch Enemy on bass. It was fronted by Kimberley Goss who's been involved in several significant acts, and hey, at least she has an excuse for sounding like a girl.

Other power metal recommendations:

Masterplan - includes my favourite singer (Jorn Lande)

Powerwolf

Lion's Share

Brocas Helm

Aquaria - hilariously over the top, make Lost Horizon look somber

Demons & Wizards - vocalist from Blind Guardian + guitarist from Iced Earth

Anyone seeing Meshuggah in a few months? Still one of my favourite bands, even if they conceived this 'djent' bollocks:

I see your Aquaria and raise you Pathfinder (:D):
