The Trump Presidency - Part 2

Just a PSA:

  • If you are not a U.S. citizen and an immigration agent requests your papers, you must show them if you have them with you. If you are over 18, carry your immigration documents with you at all times. If you do not have immigration papers, say you want to remain silent.

time to take the passport out of storage!

The enforcers are inevitably going to make assumptions on who is legal/illegal when asking for ID so I'm sure this will go down a treat with any vaguely foreign looking US national getting persistently requested to prove themselves. Ironic that the vaunted 'Land Of The Free' will become more authoritarian than ever...

Trump will begin operations to deport millions of undocumented immigrants when he starts his term, campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt. The goal set by the Trump campaign is to detain and remove 13 to 25 million people, they plan to indefinitely detain them across various camps. The operation is being called "the largest deportation in history" and it is estimated that it will cost around 88 billion tax dollars to complete. The current US prison population is only 1.8 million. It is estimated that they could remove 1 million people per year. Experts estimate families may be rounded up together, including individuals who are not illegal, including green card holders or citizens born to illegal migrants. Future Trump proposals also include backtracking on green cards that have already been granted and exploring legislation to remove the citizenship of those born to parents not born in the US.Economist state that the mass deportation plan, if carried out as described by the Trump administration, will worsen the housing crisis and create an economic crisis in the long run.

There are already anecdotal reports about contracts being drawn up to build concentration camps in Southern Texas. Good luck, 'murica.

Actually think it’s going to be the opposite. His voters seem to dig his mean, ugly side as he has consistently reinforced it for the last 8 years yet his support grew or at least did not decline.

Now he has no real need to carry on this image. He can just go about things that can benefit him without any regard to what he had committed too. He’s an ego maniac too so might actually do things that cater to the other side as well, just to win some of them over and leave a better mark (probably false hope on this one).

I hope you’re right, but I see him going balls out especially on Elon’s austerity measures which will feck up a lot of lives.

Wonder regarding the logistics of this, it's not like illegals are out in the open and lack of documentation/registration will make them difficult to trace. Going to have to involve some nasty authoritarian actions and loads of resources. Loads of legal and innocent people will get caught up too.

A few years back there was supposed to be massive raid by police all over Melbourne to look for undocumented immigrants, that wasn’t carried out due to protests. I guess their plan will be similar to that, first the undocumented immigrants who pay taxes through the IPIN will be targeted, then they will look to hospitality, construction and farm businesses and round up anybody ‘suspicious’, there’s also the 700k DREAMers who are already on file, and their parents.

The implementation will be shoddy and indiscriminate, but cruelty has always been the point.

Because not everyone that voted for Trump is a full on MAGA loon.

It’s early days but it seems a vast number of Americans voted because they feel poorer than they did 4 years ago and blamed the Biden Administration for that. If Trump fecks up the economy and it gets worse, he’ll lose those voters pretty quickly. And if the Dems (sadly) have a competent 50 something man running they’ll mop those voted up.

He receives about the same amount of voters as last time, he can literally not lose voters for anything, so i will belive it when I see it.

Besides, there is no hope dems wins back Congress in 2 years anyway, so it doesn't matter he has 4 years to do what pretty much what he wants.

If House shakes out as it currently is, they have a decent chance to take it in 26. Senate is gone, gone, gone. Even if they somehow pick up NC ME OH special, that’s still only a tie with Vance breaking.

Can't believe people here truly think he will tank the economy. Just look how Wall Street reacted today. There is no shot.
Markets hate uncertainty. Now we know for sure that there won't be nationwide rioting.

This is probably my largest concern with them. Can't be setting that example to the rest of the world, for what it's worth even saying this out loud without enforcing any of it is bad enough as it calls out health professionals who many of the right wing freaks already have a lot of disdain for. Witnessed it first hand in Poland during COVID where the hatred towards healthcare was at unprecedented level because of misinformation spread.

No more fluoride in water, Brits will finally have better dental health than Muricans.
Most of the world don't use it.

There is no great benifit or downside to it.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridation_by_country

Out of a population of about three-quarters of a billion, under 14 million people (approximately 2%) in Europe receive artificially-fluoridated water. Those people are in the UK (5,797,000), Republic of Ireland (4,780,000), Spain (4,250,000), and Serbia (300,000).[31]

A 2022 study in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry found that cessation of water fluoridation in Calgary, Alberta, led to an increase in dental caries among children, reinforcing the CDC's stance on the importance of fluoridation.
The results showed that among 2,659 children receiving caries-related treatments under GA, 65% resided in the non-fluoridated area.

The analysis revealed that the cessation of water fluoridation was significantly associated with an increased rate of caries-related GA events per 10,000 children in both age groups (0-5 and 6-11 years), with a more pronounced effect in 0-5-year-olds in non-fluoridated areas.

According to the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA), approximately 78 percent of all Americans will have at least one cavity by the time they reach age 17. The ADHA also reports that about 80 percent of the U.S. population has some form of gum disease
Yeah good luck with that.

Sounds grim.

Pretty sure most of Europe, including the biggest and richest countries do not at fluoride but instead practice a ritual that banishes tooth decay...

Think we add it in the UK and statistically speaking, we have the best teeth in the world.

Calgary however, the anti Colgate brigade there is massive. They refuse outright to brush once, never mind twice. Death breath central over there.

Can't believe people here truly think he will tank the economy. Just look how Wall Street reacted today. There is no shot.

He will surely tank the German economy though. Mercedes, Volkswagen, BMW all -6 % today. Vassals who bet on Democrats in shambles.

Unlike Germany to bet on the losing side

Climate change is a complete runaway train at this point and most Americans don't even believe it's happening. Not even worth worrying about anymore, it's joever.

That's not true either.
72% of Americans believe climate change is happening- https://climatecommunication.yale.edu/visualizations-data/ycom-us/
54% view climate change as a "major threat" to the country's well-being - https://www.pewresearch.org/short-r...says-about-americans-views-of-climate-change/

Those numbers are likely lower than in Europe but its still a big issue. Ironically, its one that due to misinformation and Elon going big on Trump, some people actually believe the GOP is doing more to fight climate change - just look at Andrew Yang's recent Twitter post for an example.

That's not what the rest of the world thinks. Have we been lied to? The image of the average Englishman is one with rotten teeth. I refuse to give up on that belief.

You are far healthier than I am. I am drinking a coke zero sugar drink that has all sorts of chemicals added.
well i ate a pizza the last two days
just that i looked at the nutrition info on the different plant milks and they ALL have a lot of vitamins added.

Nah it's true, we have 7 teeth between the entire country and most of us rent them weekly from Bright teeth for £3.79

Is it healthier though? I imagine there's a lot of chemicals used in creating it

The problem is, it is too big an issue for people to grapple with. And the attitude is, "what can the US do when China, India etc are polluting regardless". Even when people homes are wiped out, they don't change their way of thinking on the issue. Florida is one of the states most impacted, yet it gets redder and redder.

I find it very hard to believe that people think that the GOP are better on climate than The Democrats. Their candidate, now President elect, is telling us it is a hoax.

It's weird to me that climate isn't a bigger factor in elections, it's not just the US, in the UK election back in the summer, though it was mentioned a bit, mostly in terms of Labour's GB Energy plan, the climate emergency was almost completely missing, it seemed to be the same in the US election as well.

If people care so much about the economy, you'd have thought that climate would play into that.

Very true.

I think it is about packaging up environmental and economic messaging together. The Dems tried it with The Green New Deal. Maybe part of the failure was that it was pushed by AOC.

It also bizzare that we have Trump, who until recently derided EVs and still today makes jokes about solar and other renewable energy technology. Yet, is backed by Musk, who made his fortune from that.

I have many issues with Trump, but the one the bugs me most is my inability to tune him out. Unlike any other President or world leader, he is ever present in everyone's life.

From 2016 to 2020, I felt the daily outrage. Be it waking up to his midnight tweets or the news covering the latest scandal.

This time, with many guardrails gone and the fact he will surround himself with yes men, I think he will be even harder to ignore. I feel sick at the thought of seeing him inaugurated in the same place he started the Jan 6 riot.

How does one go about tuning him out? As the daily outrage is not good for mental health.

Don't look at your phone as much, especially X.
