The Trump Presidency - Part 2

As much feckery as has happened and bill that congressionally passed house and senate bipartisanlly with supermajorities is very difficult to argue to the supreme court as being unconsitutional.

The senate vote was 87 13

The only other thing that comes close to being this bipartisan is when it comes to Israel
Acting like laws matter is precious. Our Supreme Coutrf just ruled it’s cool to dump raw sewage into the water supply, you think a little thing like a “law” matters?

It doesn't have to be easy to argue, it just requires the DOJ to posit an opinion that such a law is unconstitutional and have the executive challenge congress to sue. Whether the new congress would take up that challenge is an open question.

This presidential address popped up on my feed. Hilarious how trump gets a standing ovation every time he opens his mouth.

As Mr Trump (the Premier of Canada's 14th Province/Territory) will know - you can't sell what people don't want to buy. Has he answered the question as to why there is this huge American appetite for fentanyl and if he's worried about that what is he doing to lessen/eliminate the problem?
Obviously, the fentanyl thing is just a pretext for the tariffs. But even insofar as Trump cares about fentanyl, it's just because it makes people die in the streets. Trump just wants addicts to go back to taking drugs that don't make them such a public nuisance.

afonso are you seriously arguing trump can't do something because he's not allowed to?

where have you been the past 6 weeks

Passing executive orders that don't directly contravene congressional bills and relies on interpretation of the consitution is very different to

Completely ignoring a very explicit bill that has gone through congress with bipartisan support.

The former is grim but not unheard of and has happened in plenty of administration's, just the content and things trump is doing in these actions are awful.

The latter is completely unheard of and would literally trigger a constitutional crisis.

I have never heard a case of a president actually ignoring a passed bill, and for all the shittery that has happened, even trump hasnt done that in his last term or this term so far

Waking up to hear that the US president wants to annex territory from your country “one way or the other”. What a time to be alive.

Sigh. That's what happens when you sell out.
I remember you told us how pro-Ukraine he was. Was hoping he would work in favour of NATO and Ukraine behind the scenes. Sort of like he looked visibly uncomfortable during the scenes in the Oval Office, for him to brown nose Trump on Twitter minutes later.

i reckon the uk and europe should go all in with russia and china and then divide america in half at the end of it. it worked well enough the last time we tried something like that, and it’s just a return of the good old days.

It’s probably a weird thing to say but if I was a yank one of the things that would stress me out the most would be the complete lack of dignity, class and decorum from someone who is the figurehead of your country all over the world. Means feck all in the grand scheme of things but Christ almighty, it’s so grim to watch.

You’re very British for an Irishman

It's what appeals to so many people though. It legitimizes their own flaws of character, seeing someone like that become the president makes them think 'maybe I don't actually have to be nicer'.

Tell that to the feckers down in Kerry.

These people admire Hulk Hogan and take pain killers as a hobby.

I’m rather loving watching the US self destruct.

One of the longest running imperial powers is being systematically deconstructed by Trump and his band of merry men and women.
I remember discussing with one of my history teachers in university how the fall and decline of Rome happened. He accurately predicted that the US would have a similar sort of decline chaos/followed by short burst of stability and back again. But we thought it would take several decades if not centuries. But with Trumpism, there might not even be a USA ten years from now. In less than 6 weeks he's allied himself with Russia and is on the point of surrendering the USA's leadership of the so called 'free world' for good.

At one point he's going to need a military victory to distract the populace and get them to rally around the flag. I wonder which poor country is going to get the privilege of seeing the stars and stripes waving around the place.

War on Denmark is looming.

Someone with more knowledge than me about US Governance needs to explain the lack of checks and balances in the decisions being made. Trump running amok with executive orders, Musk and his goons running amok with people's personal data whilst telling courts he's not in charge and no opposition in site aside from pink t-shirts and social media messages. Comparing to the UK (which is far from perfect), most laws will be debated in Parliament and then scrutinised by the House of Lords. You have select committees which Cabinet members attend relevant to their portfolio and you have bodes like the ICO to guard against breaches of data protection. Even the PM will go across different media outlets for interviews and have PMQs with announcements for big decisions to be made in Parliament. I mean it's not perfect and the likes of Johnson have tried to bypass it but mostly they were brought in check.

At the moment the US is resembling a tinpot democracy bordering on insanity.

Tbf, and I say this with absolute respect to the US Caf members and fellow Americans who are not like that, but a large portion of Trump's "support base" are exactly like that. Lacks class, decorum and are completely in their "America is the bestest thing ever, god's country, USA, USA, USA!" bubble.

There's an interview a few posts up on CNN where someone (I assume he' a politician) calls Trudeau "governor" on television and he doesn't even get corrected - they have a giggle/grin about it when it is mentioned. That sums up the state of MAGA.
