The Trump Presidency | Biden Inaugurated

$54bil proposed increase in Defense budget - 10% rise from last year.

On the face of it...not a bad thing, but the increase is meant to be offset by cuts in other departments.

Late in the day to bring it back to this, but as has been reported Mattis once remarked in testimony (as CENTCOM commander) that "If you don’t fully fund the State Department, then I need to buy more ammunition". Guess Trump misunderstood what he meant.

I just watched the (insane) Trump press conference again and caught a couple of things I missed the first time around. Firstly was how belligerent Trump was in response to most of the reporters and how condescending and rude he was when they were asking him questions. Secondly was his response to the question asked by the BBC reporter....

BBC Reporter - "Excuse me Mr President, May I just ask?..."
Trump - "Where are you from?"
Reporter - "BBC"
Trump - "There's another beauty"
Reporter - (a little thrown by this) "That's a good line...... impartial, free and fair"
Trump - "Yeah, sure, just like CNN"

The BBC reporter really was quite shocked by the exchange and Trump was exceptionally rude, as he was to the majority of people who asked him questions, I just hadn't realised before quite how bad he was to the BBC guy which adds a little more context as to why they were also banned from the secret Spicy meeting last week. It also explains that his dislike of them goes back further than many had speculated. We now know that the incident(s) by the BBC that must have pissed Trump off go back further than the 15th of February, I'd just love to know what they were. Seeing as the USA gets the BBC World Service it's tough to tell, it may have been an episode of HardTalk or just the general news programmes, but that's just a guess. Whatever, it's clear they have really upset him and seriously got to him as badly as CNN and the New York Times.

His people love that. They certainly think of him as some (false) prophet who will fight for them, the helpless, people who cant fight for themselves. Rich man fighting the intelligentsia, the system etc on their behalf. Thats why he speaks in their language, and code switches albeit with little effort.

All part of his act to maintain his 'base (no pun intended) but assert leverage on the GOP.

He is suppose to be a 'charming' guy in real life.

He is the consumate politician who claims he isnt one.

code switches
This presupposes a high level of self awareness, at least in the sense defined by Gumperz. That is possible, but most will discount it. To switch codes at will is to purposefully manipulate registers affiliated with certain sections of society; to animate speech with a specific character.

I used to think he was stupid and rude -- only got away because of his rich Daddy. But the cynical me sees it that he is more manipulative than that. He does deal with different stratas of society -- from construction managers to politicians to people of power.

It's possible I suppose, but most code switching occurs subconsciously. What Trump is doing is only code switching (intentionally) if he invokes certain styles and registers in order to benefit a known audience (his base, his enemies, whoever).

Politicians are very self aware, which is half the reason I find it hard to properly understand Trump. He knows what he's doing to a certain degree, but I'm hesitant to afford him any sort of omnipotence whereby everything he does and says is a construct designed to play to a specific group. Even the most archetypal of politicians fail to meet that standard (leaked private memos, audio, or any other communication not intended for a target audience).

I think it's no more clever than a lounge pianist effecting a key change. He's been playing the same old song for decades but, this time, the audience bought his act

What a pianist he is...

He is just an overgrown child who grew up learning to do whatever it takes to get his way/goals. That's his skill.

It was John Sweeney from panorama asking him about his mob connections on an unbroadcast episode, no?

Hilariously, here's the interview uploaded by the Trump people... Except that they've cut out the question that makes Trump stand up and leave, as well as his insult to Sweeney :D

I am genuinely angry after reading this shit - HBCUs are real pioneers when it comes to school choice.

How can these assholes say this shit with a straight face? Black colleges came about to offer choice? No - you stupid f-ing cow, they came about due to necessity. Need I break down, why that was....

Yeah, it could be, and it would make sense because he would hold a grudge for that long. BTW, the actual video for that is only a few pages back mate, and it included the question and Trump leaving. It's just strange because he's never mentioned them before and they only started popping up recently, first in his Tweet then at the press conference and then being banned from Secret Spicy last week. I honestly thought there must have been a new transgression against him or as I thought earlier, maybe he has been watching BBC late at night/early in the morning when he's up on a Twitter crusade.

One thing that has become extremely evident about Trump is that if there is anything he attacks, tries to discredit or slanders or speaks about in a derogatory manner, it's fairly likely that it is something that threatens him, or something he has actually done himself and he is just projecting. It's common with Trump and it's why I suspect he would never be very good at poker, he just has too many tells. It's clear when he is shouting Fake News and mentioning specific outlets that they have recently written something that is containing damning evidence against him and/or something he wants to divert attention from and change the subject from. Ironically of course, his actions do exactly the opposite. However his actions, motives and true intentions are always exceedingly transparent.

She lost her legs in the Bowling Green Massacre.

So seems on Fox & Friends (someone else watch it, I lack the required fortitude) he said he has no intention of filling the 100s of vacancies in the Executive.

Guess all I can say is "That's a bold move Cotton, let's see if it pays off".

I genuinely believe this is because he can't trust that many people-

To be aligned with his agendas.
To do what they are told.
To not leak.

It's his idea of a nightmare having to keep that many people on his side.

He just have to hope that there will be no major storm during the next 4 years then.

Obvious answer is that he's just lazy.

Nah it's more than that. He could delegate his team to put together a shortlist with basic portfolios with big letters, lots of pictures and colours and then he could eeny meeny miny mo it.

His 'team' consists of his campaign cronies and whoever he could scrape togetherness , as evidenced by the debacle with the NSA pick.

We should refrain from giving this guy qualities he doesn't possess. He's been off on 3 vacations and 2 rallies within the first month in office. He's 'tired' on the phone with a foreign leader at 5 p.m. The humanoid cheeto is just winging it.

On a serious note, this has been reported before, but isn't it really fecking stupid, not to mention extremely dangerous to be operating with so little staff in so many key positions? Surely everything will be less efficient and effective and surely it leaves them unprepared to deal with any major crisis.

Its not because of lazyness or trust I don't think.

Him and Bannon and the rest simply do not have the skills to put a team together and a far to ignorant of the consequences to understand why they should.
