No comparison. Do you live in the US, in a state that borders Mexico?
There has to be secure borders. Not sure a wall is the answer but Sco/Eng has no relevance to this.

Whilst I agree about the need for a secure border, the disgraceful undertone of a building a fecking wall to keep out the "bad men" would be the same anywhere, whether it be Canada, Scotland or Texas.

The wall would just be symbolic. The drug corridors running north that even average Joes (and by extension the authorities) know exist would still be in full swing.

Ultimately states have a right, even a duty, to protect their borders in accordance with the wishes of their population. If (and it's a big if) a wall can achieve that then it's a legitimate means. The problem with Trump's wall is all the demonising and bullying rhetoric surrounding it.

Of course they would be.

And if you agree to Trump's wall then you should damn well agree to any country in the World building a fecking wall around the entire country on a boundary decided and fought over centuries ago.

It's symbolic and it's disgusting.

Aye, every country should just wall up the borders.

What a wonderful World image.

Instead of breaking down the daft borders that were decided and fought over years ago like Europe came so far with, we actually now have people sticking up for a fecking 3100km border wall.

It's beyond depressing :(

It's pretty ironic that the people who live in the states where the wall/fence/border is think it's a stupid idea, while the 'economically anxious' ones in Iowa or Ohio are most animated about it.

The same goes for Muslim ban.

The reason he's going ahead with the wall despite the absolutely ridiculous and pointless nature of it and the eye watering cost and logistics involved is because it literally builds a tangible, lasting monument that will forever be associated with President Trump. In his narcissistic mind this is an Egyptian Pyramid or Great Wall of China.

The coyotes who transport people across the border already have tunnels dug in to breach the fence that is currently there and they know the patrols like the TV schedule on ABC. A wall is not going to make a bare bit of difference unless they hire more rangers and reduce the response time to these breaches when they happen. A lot of the border in Arizona sits on private ranches where the ranch owners either have their own protection system or get paid off by the coyotes to use their property as a route and deliver farm labour in the right seasons. The idea is perfectly good to secure the border but the execution comes from the mental capability of a 5 year old.

Hence why I said "it's a big if".

I wonder if his business associates will rake it in after winning the contract?

Even if there is a wall unless every inch of it is guarded it won't stop people from getting over it or through it

Most of the drugs are flown in planes anyway aren't they?

Sure you might find individuals with a small amount of weed or coke on their person, but they're hardly kingpins or worth building a multi billion wall for.

I wonder if May feels the visit is a success now she knows that she cosied up to Trump on the day he signed a Muslim ban.

In practical terms, that has completely overshadowed her visit in the US. They don't care about the special relationship like we imagine they do. Globally it suggests that post-Brexit the UK is a country unwilling to stand up against torture and religious discrimination.

The US has 11m illegal immigrants. Pretty sure that's the most out of any country in the world. Can someone explain how/why they let this happen?

It's the biggest country that is also an attractive place to live. Of course it's going to have a high number of illegal immigrants. Have you got the per-100,000 figures?

Because they will vote Democrat. Which is the crux of this last election and the building of a wall combined with deportations.

Wasn't both Obama and Clinton stricter than any Republican POTUS... ever?

They're cheap labour, of course the Republicans have had little objection up to now.

They're way ahead even if you take it as a % of the population.

Was just curious as to whether this was a result of gross incompetence or more a lax attitude by certain states who don't mind illegal immigrants for either economic, political or humanitarian reasons.

Personally I would have thought 99% of the country's population are immigrants, ironically it's what made the country great in the first place.
I don't think anyone is against a secure border, but building a wall is going to be one big waste of money. Threatening 20% import taxes against their 3rd biggest trade partner is economic suicide and all the racial demonising surrounding it is just deplorable.

Yea, people in here have this pesky insistence on facts and backing up statements with evidence.

Damn them.
You don't think one of the reason's Republicans want this wall is how it might affect demographics voting patterns for decades to come? I'm not an American and not interested enough to go researching. I'm more interested in conversing than arguing.

Illegal immigrants can't vote, so it's entirely irrelevant.

It's also worth mentioning that as I understand it the majority of illegal immigrants in the US enter the country legally but then stay beyond the terms of their visa. So they arrive at the airport, not crossing the Rio Grande.

Those who do cross in that manner won't be stopped by a wall.

Can't their children vote when they grow up though? Thought their children if born in the US can get citizenship.

Even though most majority Muslim countries are not on the list "extreme vetting" will mean most applicants will not be granted entry visas. What happens to green card holders or US citizens who have relatives or married to people in those Muslim countries that are banned from entry?

Is this not against the US constitution banning government from either favouring or discriminating against particular religions?

I personally think 2 Billion Muslims should start boycotting US goods and services. That usually teaches businessmen lessons.
