What will ruin his plan is that even if you considered it the most rational thing on earth for a country to pay for protection, the political sell to the domestic populace is practically impossible to make. Even when nationalism is not at the top of the agenda like now, its a permanent undercurrent in every country's politics. You don't survive long by prostrating to other powers, even when they are stronger than you. I've seen countries move against their own interests (in my opinion) for nationalistic reasons on much milder issues than this idea of ever straight up paying for protection.

Yes, but they don't pay for it. And even if in ways they do by filling part of the budget of certain joint bases and exercises, the point is that because it was never posed to the European public as "pay or I go", but rather "we stand together" the funding of these initiatives has hardly ever been a point of significant political contention.
Ideally he wants to split up EU so he can negotiate individual free trade agreements with all nations as that gives America the biggest advantage. He really underestimate the EU as a trading bloc though and it will only make EU countries work closer to together to counter act U.S.A influence in broad terms. This could end up breaking up NATO if he persist with black mail. EU forming a new Military organization with the job of defending Europe could be the consequence ( this would lower U.S.A influence on Europe). The UK will properly pay more to the U.S.A as they need a FTA and he will exloit it and with May being the leader there wont be any hope for good terms for the UK if you look at the way she has handled the Brexit so far.
It would suit China just fine if Trump ruined American economic ties with Europe. The result would just be more European and Chinese trade long term.
