The Trump Presidency | Biden Inaugurated

This really is a huge problem for Facebook and Republicans alike.

Zuckerburg has gotten this wrong big time as it looks like he is pro Alt Right.

Could easily end up killing Facebook, which is increasingly becoming a digital wasteland, full of bots who just regurgitate fake rubbish.

I'm guessing there aren't many young people or those of us who were around when Facebook started as a networking tool for just American colleges who will be too upset about it. I fully believe Facebook is the biggest pot of vile since YouTube comments were minimized in the app view. (hallelujah).

Months too late. The members migrated elsewhere a while back and now have their own place where they don't even need to pretend to moderate stuff.

Very, very good point. T_D has been breaking sitewide rules for years now, and by not dealing with it sooner, it's allowed an almost organic migration to a new host.

Sadly I think FB will be fine, most companies boycotting are only doing it for a month and apparently big company advertising only makes up apporx 6% of FB profits the rest comes from small and medium sized businesses that can not afford not to advertise with them and Instagram as they are the only widely used affordable platforms.

They can't use TV so the money at FB will keep rolling in. The only problem for them is the PR and they have ridden out worse than this.

Facebook is increasingly seeming like the Golem of Prague. I think its near certainty that if Democrats gain control in November, the first pieces of legislation would be to break up facebook, google etc with anti-trust laws. That, more than anything else is driving FB towards the GOP rather than being some bastion of free speech or for being the patron saint of the alt right.

Being the devil's advocate it's very hard to police this policy to be fair to Facebook.

You can fully censor the POTUS, but if you apply the rules to everyone policing it would be a biga and impossible headache. It's already very easy for bots to create swarms of fake account.

Some things are quite obvious like BLM, but for many other countless issues like Winston Churchil, Syria, free Palestine etc is very hard to draw a clear line.

Facebook can't afford to play jury to every cause and every post

Facebook is a cesspit of far right and racist opinions. Every newspaper article is followed by hundreds of racist comments, and no one bats an eye. I would delete my account, but still use it regularly to get updates on my favorite bands, tours, record releases etc...

People already move on from Facebook, they're just too big not to have since most registration are still based on facebook account.

It's not alive at the moment, only auto generated post from Games and a casual ig photos and probably a few lines every once in a while 90% of my list are probably dormant or not active

I don't think anyone is asking to censor the president but the violent alt right groups, the lynch mobs in places like South Asia etc thrive on the spread through facebook, instagram and whatsapp. It might be hard but at this point its an existential threat to the idea of a social network platform that is so widespread if it doesn't come up with ways to identify and ban them. I mean silicon valley has a machine learning/AI firm pop up every hour and if facebook decided to invest into that kind of technology, they won't even need to hire many moderators to police every nook and cranny of their digital world.

You are right. The only actual FB posts is still see are aunts and older family members posting pictures of cats

Something needs to kill it...I only use it now because seemingly there isn't a good enough alternative for everybody to switch too easily.

Terrorist used Whatsapp too by the way. But like I say, one party's terrorist is the other party freedom fighter, and once you play the judge it becomes muddy.

And there's also favoritism, I won't trust Whatsapp/facebook not to become tools of the United States agenda. If they start cencoring stuff they'll become de facto too powerful not because of what they censor, but what they can let air.

All it takes is one tragedy concocted on a facebook group and a subsequent lawsuit and the shareholders will start acting up.

The calls caused former top Trump deputies ... to conclude that the President was often ‘delusional’ ... the calls ‘are so unusual,’ confirmed a German official, that special measures were taken in Berlin to ensure that their contents remained secret”

Scary as hell!

A law unto himself.

Yeah let's be honest with this one: the info was in a briefing, but Trump doesn't have time to read those. Fox and Friends ain't gonna watch itself.

Countless sources including Bolton have said Trump barely acknowledges the daily briefings, and requests an oral summary once a week or so.

and we all know what happened to Bill Clinton when he got the same service
I knew one of those comments was coming when I wrote it, but couldn't be bothered to use a different word. ;)

Scary to think he was plotting a Presidential bid. If he became President it would be an even more dystopian story than when Trump did.

Already did that 3 months ago. Best social media decision I've made.

Thankfully he is weird AF creep , with no chance of winning any popular vote.

Trump is a weird AF creep, but he does have more personality or at least some ability to appear human anyway. Zuckerberg’s strategy would have been based entirely on exploiting the immense personal data Facebook has though. Don’t underestimate technology’s capacity to subvert democracy. You put that behind any candidate + money and the press and you have the potential to get anyone into office.

You really think so? I've been off Facebook since 2010, but heavily use WhatsApp, Instagram etc. Would love to see a breakdown of their revenues by business line.

They don't disclose any of that. But speaking to industry contacts everyone thought that core Facebook is still the daddy because it had highest rate of ads. Instagram 2nd but still less than half of what Facebook does, although growing faster as they insert more ads (had to learn right format/frequency to do ads on stories) and WhatsApp still basically not monetized. I used to know the recent conversation on this ~1 year ago, haven't really looked into it that much recently.

Even with all the data you still must be able to command a crowd which Hillary was also terribly poor at.

Is this how it's going to go until the elections? These kinds of reveals have been coming out regularly, but I feel the tempo has been upped now. And this sort of article attacks him at his core: he doesn't give a sh*t about the US and he can't negotiate. Has the GOP given up on Trump given his abysmal polling and are the daggers out now? Destroy Trump to make sure he will have no legacy and the GOP can start afresh (in a way), while putting all effort on saving endangered Senate seats?

Same, I literally haven't put anything on my account since the day I opened it. Targeting algorithms keep my feed full of interesting stuff and cool resources. But anyone who is emersed in it or spreads their lunacy through it is a fecking loser in my opinion.

The GOP are *****. They will sit in the corner watching and smiling until it is inconvenient to do so. When the fear of being primaried by a trump sycophant subsides then they will pop their heads out of the slime pretending to be oblivious to the last 4 years while screaming for investigations in to Hunter Biden and insinuating the Joe himself had a hand in his wife and daughters death. That the kind of filth they are.

True but it’s only the ludicrous college system or whatever it’s called that got Trump in, she had 2m more votes overall I recall

The electoral college - honestly who got more votes is irrelevant. It's like saying Liverpool won the points race but City had a better goal difference.

It’s far from irrelevant and it’s symptomatic of a much wider and rotten election system. Voter suppression, gerrymandering etc

There's an app called Songkick where you can track bands and their tours. Also if you have them on something like instagram you'll usually see when they have new music out.

Well, they never campaigned for the popular vote - they campaign for 6-7 states, that's it. FL, NC, OH, PA, WI, AZ and NV? Big states like NY, CA, TX are taken for granted.

It's a shitty system, but them the rules.

No one has said otherwise. It's not the gotcha argument you think it is when literally the point people are making is that it's a shitty system which should be changed.

Slavery is a shitty system, but them the rules.
Male-only suffrage is a shitty system, but them the rules.
Feudalism is a shitty system, but them the rules.
