The Trump Presidency | Biden Inaugurated

Just how is this guy the president of the USA? I get that all countries constantly vote people/parties in that they really shouldn't and they do some awful stuff, but I have no idea how he was voted in, it's absolutely bizarre.
Watch The Great Hack on Netflix. Social media has made it very easy to manipulate the necessary portion of the voter base to swing an election in a broken political system like the US where a few swing states can decide the entire election. Donald Trump is a blithering idiot. The people running his campaign are not.

He won't let little things like facts and video evidence change his mind.

"No, didn't happen. Fake news"

Amazing that when he does/says something wrong, he doubles down instead of admitting it or at least, not commenting further and letting it die down naturally. Guys unique

Trump, the GOP, and right-wing media check off a few of these principles.
6. To be perceived, propaganda must evoke the interest of an audience and must be transmitted through an attention-getting communications medium.
10. Material from enemy propaganda may be utilized in operations when it helps diminish that enemy's prestige or lends support to the propagandist's own objective.

13-19 also apply here with 13.c. really standing out for me - A propaganda theme must be repeated, but not beyond some point of diminishing effectiveness.
14 covers down on Trump attaching slanderous nicknames to people and dumbing down for his core base to digest.
16 stirs preexisting anxiety in the base.
17 the strong man approach gives these people belief America is strong again, and evangelical leaders pimping for Trump provides a belief "God" has chosen Trump.
18 creating the other, or multiple others, to rally the base.

Genuine question for those who may know, why are US presidents even revered and put on a pedestal anyway when they are only democratically elected officials. When did all this sucking up and paranoia begin? Was it after JFK?

You look at other world leaders (apart from the dictators, of course) and they don't even come close to the amount of attention he gets. There's no way on earth that Johnson, or any PM for that matter would have got away with even 1/50th of what Trump has, even from members of the same party. Why are US presidents so irreprehensible?

When do you think this started, @Carolina Red? I'm guessing this kicked off somewhere between the late 1800s and FDR probably?

I think you need to separate what we are seeing now from what we’ve seen in the past.. the hero worship has existed from the very beginning with the semi-deification of George Washington. That said, you had to be damned good for that to happen, because you don’t see that treatment given to the Millard Fillmore's and Grover Cleveland’s of the American presidency. We’d had Washington, Lincoln, T. Roosevelt, and F. Roosevelt basically “revered“.

Since FDR though we’ve developed the “imperial presidency” and the tendency to grow a cult of personality around the president even if he hasn’t actually accomplished (relatively) much compared to the names mentioned previously. Reagan is placed among Washington and Lincoln in GOP-land, which is silly... but even that pales in comparison to what we see with Trump. It is as if the right took their view of how the left “hero worshipped” Obama and decided to amplify it to its nth degree and then apply it to a president that hasn’t actually accomplished anything.

Another outright blatant lie.
cnut.

cnut is correct. But he quite clearly was speaking to the person sat down, obscured by Trump and the lecturn.

It’s an insane point to contend as the words were ridiculous no matter the audience

I'm talking more about the security, the cavalcades, the intelligence, the secret service, the "Yes, Mr President, No, Mr. President" bowing and scraping, the 'protect the President at all costs' etc., etc. It just seems a bit over the top for someone who in the grand scheme of things really is not that important. But the veneration of his position seems to have been blown out of all proportion. Perhaps it's slightly exaggerated somewhat in all those films where a president is featured. Or is it? I don't know.

I guess, not being American, I'll never really understand the American psyche but from the outside looking in, it just seems a bit excessive. I can see how all that power and worship could easily go to someone's head but with that being said and with all the protocols in place, it still seems quite easy for some lunatic to take the great US down some dark path unchecked.

You’re not overestimating it, it genuinely is fecking stupid and over the top. Americans also often love the line about ‘Respect the office not the man’ as yet another way to avoid holding whatever cnut happens to be in the White House to account. It’s pathetic and sycophantic frankly, like journalists and staff calling him ‘sir’ as if they’re schoolchildren or menials.

The media are the big problem here also. They basically cover the trivial shite like they would cover the greek gods of Olympus. Then they ignore the important stuff that actually matters in our lives. If the media had any credibility or balls they would be tearing McConnell and Pelosi a new one and treating this administration for what it is, a fecking farce.

Some of this goes back to the Cold War, when they came to the decision that a single person (being the POTUS) had to be able to pull the trigger on nukes in an existential crisis. This ramped up the power creep from Congress to the White House which started from the beginning and escalated in times of crisis like the Civil War and the Great Depression.

Also, we never fully shed ourselves of our Englishness and need our monarchy; whether that’s actors, athletes, or presidents. And we fecking love our lawns.

What is weird about calling someone ‘sir’? I call every guy sir. It‘s just common etiquette.

There just seems to be more emphasis on protecting the office of the president than there is on protecting the US people from the office of the president if that makes sense. Trump just comes across as a glorified dictator without the inhumane and malevolent behaviour normally associated with that moniker. I dread to think where the country would be if the GOP controlled the House as well.

Well, you also have to note the celebrity that JFK and his family was coming about as TVs began to be standard in American homes. Fast forward past an actor becoming president to an era of globalization including social media where regions have still not reconciled after the the Civil Rights Movements and you have Trump.

It’ll be mildly interesting to see if Trump takes a break from the briefings after his horror show last week. If he does, it won’t last for long as he can’t help himself but get up there in front of the cameras.
He takes up so much air that they’re doesn’t seem to be much left for the Dems. Or are they just sitting back and giving trump enough rope to hang himself with?

I found this funny.

For people who do not know him, he is one of the top AI scientists in the world, and the director of research at Facebook (Facebook has been criticized in this thread for being pro-Trump).

His advisors and the republican party feel the conferences are having a negetive effect on his re-election chances, they think he is being over exposed and they want him to do less appearances.

He'll go back to rage tweeting about his adversaries and sucking himself off. It's probably for the best.

The guy is a bonafide liar. Bob Woodward also said in his book that Trump gets to the office very late after watching TV.

Out of all the pathetic tweets he's put out, this has to be top 5 most pathetic. It's not even the kind of bragging that makes someone go "hey, that's not true!", it's way too surreal for that. It's just sad. It's pretty much like how Kim Jong-Il is supposed to have hit a Hole in One on every hole his first time golfing.

Lincoln freed the slaves in his first three and a half years, for feck's sake.

He deleted it now, but this is what the imbecile wrote:

When will all of the “reporters” who have received Noble Prizes for their work on Russia, Russia, Russia, only to have been proven totally wrong (and, in fact, it was the other side who committed the crimes), be turning back their cherished “Nobles” so that they can be given....

....to the REAL REPORTERS & JOURNALISTS who got it right. I can give the Committee a very comprehensive list. When will the Noble Committee DEMAND the Prizes back, especially since they were gotten under fraud? The reporters and Lamestream Media knew the truth all along....

....Lawsuits should be brought against all, including the Fake News Organizations, to rectify this terrible injustice. For all of the great lawyers out there, do we have any takers? When will the Noble Committee Act? Better be fast!

I thought you might have been misled because surely that’s not real, but the #1 trending topic on Twitter is ‘Nobel’.

Fake news, pal.

Has he refused to do a press conference again tonight ? I was quite looking forward to what wacky things he was going to come out with next.

Seriously though if I was an American I would be terrified with him in charge, and this is coming from someone with Boris Johnson in charge of his country.

Far less absurd than the way we treat the royals who aren't even elected. We are worshiping inherited wealth and power with added forelock tugging.

There's speculation he's going to quit them as they are killing him politically.

Australia has had some truly terrible PM's recently from Tony Abbott to the current incumbent, #scottyfrommarketing, but BoJo is next level incompetent and Trump reminds me of one of those 80's body swap comedies like Big. Only in this film Ralph Wiggum has been transported into the body of the President of the USA. And it isn't funny because it is so scary.

Taken out the shovel and brought his JCB.

Ignore my last post, this just pushed that other tweet right out of the top 5 most pathetic tweets list. This is some primary school shit right here.

I know we say this every time, but it's genuinely incredible how he manages to lower the bar yet again. We must be seeing early signs of dementia here, surely? This is not normal, not even for Donald Trump.

It bears bringing up the famous Trump family moment criticizing the Pulitzer Prize:
