Asked if everyone who needs a ventilator will get one, Trump says 'don't be a cutie pie'

Can you promise that everyone who needs a ventilator get one? a reporter just asked Trump at the White House briefing.

“I think we’re in really good shape,” Trump said. “I think we’re in great shape.”

“We’ve distributed vast numbers of ventilators and we’re prepared to do vast numbers.”

The reporter pressed Trump again: Will everyone who needs a ventilator get one?

“Don’t be a cutie pie,” Trump told the reporter, repeating, mockingly, “‘Everyone who needs one.’”

“Nobody’s ever done what we’ve done,” Trump went on. He complained the country “was a mess” when he took over. “It was a broken country in so many ways. We had a bad testing system. We had a bad stockpiling system.”

By asking the question about whether every American who needs a ventilator will get one, Trump said, the reporter was “being a wise guy.”'

I mean I just saw Trump say they are trying Malaria drugs on patients who are dying. If it works we have done a great job but if it doesn't hey ho..I think that's highly irresponsible of him to say that. Or am I just being petty?

what testing system when he took over? The man is bonkers, an absolute disgrace with lies and more lies. He always gets away with it. I’m sick of it. He needs to be held to account, he is negligent in duty and putting peoples lives at risk.
And yet his approval ratings are high, people just are really thick or in denial.

Very irresponsible. There have already been deaths from people taking chloroquine without a prescription because of Trump's recommendation.

His base just swallow everything he says it doesn’t matter.

It’s like that video of the Trump supporter asking why Obama wasn’t even in the Oval on 9/11. I mean ffs.

I dislike Trump as much as anyone, but I think the question was not made in a good spirit (I watched it live). It is one of those questions which you just cannot answer. What was Trump supposed to say there? Say 'yes' and you are lying, say 'no' and you are introducing panic.

The US, as far as I know, is in pretty good shape when it comes to the ventilators. I think it has the highest ventilators per capita from the large nations, and the idea is to build another 100k ventilator and to buy more. Additionally, in New York, they are improvising to have up to 4 people to use a ventilator (originally the idea was introduced in Italy). Finally, some other heart machines are being converted to ventilators.

Saying that, if shit hits the fans, there are going to be people who will die cause of lack of ventilators, the same as there were people who died in Italy, and are going to be in every country. But the US is better prepared when it comes to ventilators than any other country. Actually, at this stage, I am more worried about the lack of doctors and nurses. You can buy and build ventilators, you can make them to be used from 4 people, you can convert other machines to them, so eventually, the capacity of ventilators would be 10 times or so higher than now. But how you can have 10 times as many doctors and nurses, and what happens when some of them die or get sick?

It doesn’t take watching it live to see that as classic Trump attacking the person asking the question because he’s a thundercnut and that’s his go to response.

The simple answer is “we’re working hard to make that happen”.

Jesus, I cannot believe I am defending Trump nowadays.

There has been a single person who died cause of that. He drank chloroquine phosphate which is not the malaria pill Trump mentioned, but it is a substance used to clear fish aquariums. Sure, it is tragic that a life got lost, and that guy might be a worthy Darwin award winner, but it is not something to be blamed on Trump.

I don't see anything wrong with chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine being used in sick patients. It is a relatively safe drug, which has shown some promise. It actually is being used in trials (with another 52 or so drugs that are currently being used for covid-19 treatment). It might work, it might not work. If I am sick and dying, I would much rather prefer if the doctor gives to me, it or some other drug which has shown some promise, rather than nothing. If that saves my life great, further evidence for it, if it doesn't, too bad but I was a dead man anyway.

He more or less said that, to then the reporter reasking the question again, essentially being a bit of a twat in the process.

Let's be fair, you, me, Trump, that reporter know that if things go bad, there won't be enough ventilators. He asked a legitimate question, got a good answer, reasked again to look smart (and eventually even push Trump to say no and then go with some headline, or push him to say yes, and when someone dies without a ventilator then write how Trump lied). As I said, it was not done in a good spirit, and then Trump behaved like he behaves all the time.

If you find yourself defending Trump, it’s generally a good sign that you've lost your way a bit. Think about the wider context around this stuff, it’s not about one Trump answer, it’s about the twat telling states to buy their own ventilators and then outbidding them at the federal level. It’s about New York crying out for equipment and Trump saying states have to treat him well if they want help. It’s about Trump acting like states don’t even fecking need ventilators anyway, when this is so obviously stupid and wildly irresponsible.

Reporters are supposed to hold politicians feet to the fire on our behalf, not suck their dicks to make everyone feel good.

Trumps lawyers are sending cease and desist letters to various TV stations to try and stop this from running, it’s made by a Biden super pac. It’s quite powerful, I can see why he hates it!

That's an impossibility, though. We can't forecast how many people will need ventilators. The best answer is something along the lines of "No country can possibly be prepared for this [need for ICU beds and ventilators]. We're going to make as many as we can, as fast as we can."

It was a thundercnut question and it got a thundercnut response. Been seeing a lot of this from journo's, even in Canada. They're all angling for a Peabody off of one dumbarse question.

I don't agree. I think you can keep some level of objectivity in all cases.

Saying Trump is a cnut is okay. Blaming Trump cause some idiot drank aquarium cleaner and died is stupid though.

Reporters making legitimate hard questions are fine. Reporters who all the do is to try to get some gotcha moment are cnuts and are not doing that job very well. Typically they get away with it, while with Trump they get some abuse (which actually is their biggest moment of glory).

Saying Trump is a cnut is okay. Blaming Trump cause some idiot drank aquarium cleaner and died is stupid though.

So that wasn't Trump's fault? Would they have done what they did unless Trump had said what he did? Were the people who drank it stupid and gullible? Sure, but the problem politicians have to deal with is that large numbers of people in every country are stupid and gullible. Look at the percentages who fall well below average intelligence. So should we just ignore that? If Trump stands up tomorrow and says that drinking bleach really kills a lot of germs, and thousands die, do we give him a pass on that too?

He's the president, he has more responsibility than basically anyone else on earth, and yes what he says actually costs lives, even if it wouldn't hold up in a court of law.

I sincerely disagree. If Trump says that a vaccine will prevent the disease, and then some idiot puts the first needle he finds on his eye and got blind, is Trump the one to be blamed?

I mean, we could have had an argument for the sake of it, if that person actually got some malaria pills and then died (even then, Trump never said to do so without a medical prescription), but he actually got something very different that has a somehow similar name.

It’s certainly a grey area. He’s certainly not legally responsible, im looking at it purely whether he bears moral responsibility. On one hand there probably will always be people who do crazy things that you can link to a politicians words. I think that’s largely unavoidable and I don’t think the politician should be blamed. But when you have a politician who just says anything that comes into their head, without any thought of the wider consequences, I think they definitely start to bear some responsibility for what comes from that. If it was a one off then I’d probably just give him a pass because we all screw up sometimes, but this stuff keeps happening and it’s increasingly clear that he just doesn’t care.

I’ve read multiple stories of multiple people.

And I don’t care if 1 did die from that, that’s 1 too many cause of him.
Did you ignore entirely the post? The idiot who died didn't even get the pills Trump mentioned, he instead drank some aquarium cleaner.

Yeah I read it - I said I don’t care. He did it because the president kept telling people about chloroquine and the poor fellow didn’t know better. That’s why normal people aren’t allowed to give medical advice without a license.

Also, it is more than just him...
Claims by Donald Trump regarding the effectiveness against coronavirus of an anti-malarial drug untested against the disease have led to it being hoarded, as well as to at least one death in the US and a number of overdoses around the world.
Trump called the drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine potential “gamechangers” during a press conference last week, spurring a rush by some individuals – and even countries, including Algeria and Indonesia – to stockpile the drugs. India, meanwhile, has announced it will ban export of the drug.

How about, it is hard to make such a guarantee, but I assure you we will do our utmost to ensure blaaablablabla.

Or something.

Prepare to lose some brain cells reading this but here you go, one of the many reasons Trump will be back into office thanks to die'ard Trump fans' on my Facebook and by possible extension the Baby Boomers.

for context - this is the South (Louisiana) a "proud" red state but we do live near New Orleans (very liberal City - where she works fyi) and we're now only second to New York with the amount of virus cases. So Trump is about to go all doohickey over New Orleans, probably not the state itself though // the chick lovin' Trump has been a sufferer of domestic abuse by her (many) partners but hey, just locker talk amirite?

And the dude below about "hurt feelings" also is the domestic abuser, go figure huh.

There really is no hope is there. Brainwashing in full effect.

Social distancing in full effect to set a good example to the US and world public...... No handshaking either.

:wenger: FML....

I mean the stupidity of handing things to people like that and then all being stood so close is one thing and yes it’s ridiculous, but....

Presidents would usually sign the different letters of their names with different pens and then those pens would be gifted to certain key people as they were considered to hold some historical significance as they were used to sign whatever law it was.

He just signed with one pen and then handed a bunch of random sharpies out to everyone

The Trump administration’s handling of this crisis had been a shambles from the start. I guess you can’t blame Trump for the theory of Darwin not doing its work, but his lack of leadership and underestimation of the crisis have been evident for all to see. Governing is all about seeing ahead and Trump and his administration have failed miserably in this respect. 4 more years!!

Isn't it because they've cut and pasted bits of his speeches to create apparent sentences (which look bad/stupid)?

I know he does that all the time anyway but think I read some of the apparent quotes were more than one thing put together (and out of context).

He's still a dick mind
