Generally speaking having had to sign a few nda's in my time the penalties are set high enough to be a major problem and yes most probably bankrupt people... That's their entire purpose in the contract...

E.g.your looking at buying a company and have to sign an NDA to do the Due diligence... Let's say you find something you don't like...
Let's say I used this info and shorted the stock then leaked the info
Probably a few million for breach of the NDA... Plus however much I made from shorting... Plus any consiqential loss to the other party (reputation... The loss of market value etc)
