I've wondered about this. Does he strike anyone of letting the presidency go, if he actually would last that long?

Just stop this line of thinking. It's not going to happen. A popular president couldn't make it happen, and Trump is outright unpopular. What's he going to do? Just say "okay, I'm still President, you guys can't stop me"? Refuse to move out of the White House? As soon as he stops being President... he's no longer President.

Why not? If he wants to stay in power after a second term and the Republicans don't stop him because he's useful to their agenda, what happens then? It is quite far-fetched but it's not as if all dictators have come into office with the backing of the entire country.

You can't just stay in power. The army follows the constitution and any order after his term expires will be ignored. In order to do what you imply he needs to have thr whole joint chiefs + all the american based commands on his side. Basically a military coup.

He would need the support of the military, for a start. And generals for most part have integrity.

In order for it to be legal, it needs a change of constitution which cannot happen without bipartisan support (it needs supermajority of the senate and federal states to vote for the change).

It just won't happen and people are getting worried for nothing (same as those right wing guys who were saying that Obama will try to stay in power forever).

Anyway, if Dems get their shit together, Trump will be president for at most another 27 months.

The GOP wouldn't support him. This is far beyond voting a rapist on to the Supreme Court. Even if someone wanted to support him, it would be political suicide - hell, it might even be actual suicide, if you count being shot as a traitor suicide. Either the military would get them, or the revolution would.

It's not going to happen. It's as close to impossible as you can get without being literally impossible.

The constitution is only as strong as the people willing to support it. I'm partially playing devil's advocate - I don't think he'd ever be popular enough to retain power and he'd be in his late 70s by then anyway, but if we're arguing that he'll potentially need a military coup to displace him then it shows the stage we're at currently.

We've been told consistently that the GOP don't support him on certain matters and yet they persistently remain with him. I suspect he'd be removed by the military but I'd never count on his party to do the right thing. A significant element of the Republican base like him enough to the point where they wouldn't give a feck if they let him stay in power beyond his two terms.

No I meant he will need to stage a military coup to stay in power. The military removing him would be following the Constitution on which they swear. At least that's how I see it.

Relax, no way would he want to be president that long. His policies will be coming home to roost by then and his popularity will bottom out. He'll want to go back to being able to tweet, be in front of millions and play golf all day. Which admittedly means not changing too much of his day to day, but without the occasional stress and requirements.

It is just a thought. Saying that he doesn't want to let go of the presidency isn't the same as saying it's going to happen. Thought that was obvious.

He’ll die of a heart attack before he completes a second term. That belly is getting bigger. The doctor who said he wasn’t obsese should go to specsavers
