The Trump Presidency | Biden Inaugurated

How the feck does one go from Obama to Trump?

This is Sir Alex to Moyes type of transition. I never had faith in the majority in making big decisions and this has only strengthen that. Just like Moyes this will certainly be very entertaining. I am looking forward to the next four years!

Because there was not an Obama-type candidate in this election (well maybe Bernie).

What I am most concerned about is the science community, which Trump or the Republican Party is no where close to. A party that think climate change is a myth, will certainly not give a shite about the advancement of humankind or any mission we have to explore the universe. We will be stuck with backward thinking that those religious zealot want to implement into society. Hopefully, private agency can contribute enough funds that enables us to explore proxima centuri. In particular proxima B.

Republicans dont actually believe that though do they? surely?

I always assumed Republicans were simply conservative who tag on the religious crap because they need those bible bashing votes, and Democrats couldn't get away with going after those votes.

Cant imagine much will change, they simply wont be as loud about what they do in tech/science industries. And they'll go loud instead about bringing back a few industies, cars, steel etc.

Politicians on either side don't actually want to do shit, they are there to make sure nothing happens fast, good or bad, it gets done slowly, because change makes the masses jumpy.

If we ever wanted actual stuff to happen, we'd go abit more technocratic or something and have qualified people making the decisions in a timely manner. Not having Chancellors who have Art History degrees and such nonsense.

My thoughts as well, so basically the Dems f*cked up in who they picked rather than it being a sudden mass switch to racism. People didn't want Clinton
But its not just they didn't want Clinton. They also didn't want the Democrats. The Democrats managed to also lose the Senate and House elections. For me this is really not surprising, and is an example of the Hegelian dialectic, two terms of the left were always going to lead to a reactionary swing to the right.

Btw will Clinton retire?

I agree with Raoul that not much will change for the average American. It never does because the president does not have a great effect on daily lives. Climate change and the environment are my big concerns. California will be buffered by the fact that states have a lot of control over local conditions and it is a large state with a democrat assembly, senate and governor. The rest of the world may experience more change as a result of foreign policy, trade deals, reduced immigration, global warming, and so on.

There are reports that after Brexit, the racial hate crimes have been on the rise. What this election also has done is, it has openly stated that racism is ok. Would you still be making the statement that the average american will not be affected if the hate crimes go up??..

Also Obamacare is done for.

Ironic how the majority of my FB friends who like Trump on FB are muslims and feminists. You can't make this up.

If I was a betting man, I would be betting that he won't see out his 4 years.

The way she has handled this shows an astonishing lack of class to be honest. Even through tears, a couple of words would have been something for the thousands that were having the worst night of their lives at her rally.

How dare are you? She was entitled to become president! She was betrayed by her fellow Americans!

Yes that's the assumption - that most Johnson and Stein voters would've broken towards Hillary. The parties that are generally more socially progressive (Libs and Greens) tend to go more to Dems and conversely, the likes of Ross Perot's Reform Party in 92 and 96, took more from the GOP, which at least once resulted in Bill Clinton winning.

Libertarian's progressiveness doesn't normally tend toward social programs, especially in the US. There's no way Johnson's support would have plucked for Hillary.

It's hard to rationalise this all in my head, without sounding bitter and I know not all Trump supporters are racists etc but it's really depressing to see one of the most powerful countries in the world have its people stand up and say 'we don't think that racism, sexism, sexual assault, xenophobia, homophobia and other vile traits are that bad and if you hold them, we will not shun you, we would still make you the most powerful person in our country.' I can't see how any rational sane person wouldn't abandon that person simply out of principle. Surely to even consider voting for him is to insult any progress we've made on those issues in the last few decades.
This is the sanest post I've read on this so far. It is not about what now or what happens to America or the world. I genuinely think it won't be as bad as many think, it is about the part highlighted. Yes not all his supporters are bigoted racists but it is indisputable that they are not repulsed by him as much as western civilisation thought people in the 21st century feel. Turns out we are still the same hateful, racist, sexist species we always were the second things start going south, slightly south if I may add. Nobody in the west can start looking down on sexist or less progressive attitudes elsewhere in the world without looking naïve.

As a politician who seeks office via election? Highly likely she is done. She tried for President twice and failed. She's a modern day Adlai Stephenson, except there is nothing really to compare the two. (hey false equivalency is where it's at).

Will she ever again get an appointed position in government? No.

Will she continue with her foundation and speeches and such? Of course.

That's unfair. Adlai was an intellectual who meant well.

Why the Krugman hate?

Us classical/liberal/orthodox economists hate Krugman. Cant explain it that well, I think it might be because he is one of the most widely known of the profession, and largely says stuff we disagree with while being smug.

His International Economics textbook is brilliant, but the NY times columnist that occupies that body today seems nothing like the author.

Out of interest how do you think Joe Biden would have done had he been in Hillary's place?

If I was a betting man, I would be betting that he won't see out his 4 years.

I could actually see him throw a fit when things don't go his way and quit. Wishful thinking I know.

Impeachment will be tough since it is largely a political process not a legal one. That is the reality of it, so I am not sure a Republican controlled House and Senate would pursue such actions against him, unless he became extremely unpopular with the entire nation.

Being assassinated? Probably an unlikely occurrence.

Military Coup? Might be the best bet if he tries to nuke someone.

Watching that video of John Oliver begging Trump to run for president 3 years ago is so nerve-inducing. We were all so arrogantly dismissive.

To get away from the Hitler comparisons for just a minute, wasn't there another similar, white supremacy/anti immigration demagogue who won a presidential election in the 19th century? Can't seem to remember his name right now though. Might be worth taking a closer look into his administration, and seeing how things might go this time round.

I think he could be impeached. If I'm not mistaken, the vice-president always is the next in line for succession even when it comes to impeaching. Mike Pence clearly is a better pick for the Republican congress. If they get a chance, I think they have the possibility to take it.

Lincoln?

Biden would have won.

A big question is why Obama refused to support Biden? Was well known he was considering running. Did he make a promise to Clinton in 2008 that he would back her after he was finished.

They could but I think it would largely depend on Trumps popularity. He will never get much above 48% approval levels at most, but if it dips to 40% or lower and there are some charges to bring, the Repubs might take a chance. Like I said it is really largely a political process.

Andrew Jackson? He was shit.

Can't he just quit? I can imagine him getting bored very soon. His life scrutinised 24/7, for a guy that likes to grope women and playboyish parties must be a huge change. He's just not used to being a politician. None of the luxuries that may come from the presidency will be anything new to him. And as much as he likes power he'll probably be more challenged as a president than he his running his businesses. More things that he simply can not do or have his way.

I know, I know. Won't happen.

EDIT: Plus, I missed your first sentence

I don't think Trump ever believed he could win this thing until about two hours before his victory speech this morning.

Why I hate Krugmann? It is actually not based on my economic disagreement with his ideas.
He is the dishonest, partisan cancer at the crossroad of politics, economics and journalism that is poisoning the public debate, while portraying himself as impartial expert. He is the symbol for everything that’s wrong with the public discourse, the state of economics as an academic profession, politics, debate culture and identity politics. He is a hypocrite of the highest order, who shamelessly lies when it suits him. The fact that he massively profits from this behavior is just the cherry on top.

From mobile, I can't. If you really are interested, its easy to find information. Uganda is a good country to start.

That's a lie we want to believe. They are also importing their own workers and most of the infrastructure build is too benefit their mining sites and cities.
It ain't a lie since I am witnessing it every single day
