If people don't respect the emblems of their country, they have no right to participate in its public ceremonies.

Hijacking public events to declare one's political views smacks of arrogance. 'Racial injustice' is not the only issue in America. What if everybody decided to use such occasions to force their pet grievances on the notice of others? We couldn't go to a play, or visit the cinema or even enter a public park without being harangued: Save the Whale, Keep Atheism out of our Schools, Build more Railways, Build more Roads, Bomb Iran, Make peace with Iran.....

The social contract whereby we keep such declarations for the appropriate occasion would be broken, and with it a necessary restraint which makes social living tolerable.

You think this kneeling business is disrespecting their country? That's certainly the narrative Trump is desperate to create I guess.

You are an actual fascist.

A man associated with the Project for a New American Century employing a murderer... I’m shocked I tell you, shocked!

I remember thinking that the PNAC was to blame for many of our ills, especially in the late 00s. They are almost quaint compared to the morass in Washington right now.

I've lost all hope on Trump getting booted from the white house prematurely. His base doesn't give a feck. I think he could literally eat a baby on live television and they'd still scream MAGA and tell themselves it was probably an illegal immigrant baby.

I bet you feel gutted you weren’t born 80 years earlier.

My thoughts exactly.

"If people don't respect the emblems of their country, they have no right to participate in its public ceremonies."

This is absurd

If anything I find it hard to be believe people go apeshit over a dumb thing like a flag at all. It's just a dye'd piece of cloth. It's your actions that define you, not singing some old dumb song at a flag.

Silly Americans with their silly patriotism.

fine, we have Kingsday, so I'm not one to talk, but meh.

This is literally what Trump is doing.

AND he doesn't even know the words!!
So true

Side note: Adam Schefter from ESPN just made the point on Golic & Wingo that he thinks part of Trump’s animosity toward the NFL is down to his former ownership in the USFL and his being turned down by the NFL when he tried to buy the Bills.

Having an appropriate occasion where you troop your colour or whatever is one thing, having it infect daily life something else. Given Will's rant it's deliciously ironic that you can hardly go to a sporting event in America without having patriotism and fealty to the flag forced down your throat. Imagine if you had to sing the thing before every movie or play. Maybe they should have star spangled meuzzins giving out mandatory call to flag moments 5 times a day. Maybe provide space in public parks so people can prostrate themselves at their leisure.

Social contract my arse, Will's complaint is wearing jackboots cunningly disguised as clown shoes.

I mean fair play to the guy for poking Herr Dipshit in the eye but seriously, you know what you're going there for, you know it's on the lawn, and you wear stone coloured trousers?
Someday they will be on display at the Smithsonian.

You can't force patriotism on anyone.

Was it this guy?

The absolute worst for false 'rumours' is Donald's old pal the National Enquirer. For example, Cher has been dying for three decades, apparently.
