The Trump Presidency | Biden Inaugurated

How's the Street doing post Trump?

In the stock markets the S&P 500 (+3% since) or Dow Jones Index (+4%) that people look at most commonly look at don't tell the story in this case. Its the sector performances that are interesting, with Financials +12%, Materials +5% and others up, while Technology is flat and Consumer Staples is down -2%.

Proposed tax cuts are a boost for the great majority of companies, so there's also been a bonds to stocks move... dunno what else to highlight. Won't pretend I have a full grasp on this, and it can all change by next week. But has been a very hard couple of weeks to navigate, don't envy Portfolio Managers right now.

I've resigned myself to the irrational belief that things can't get that bad in 4 years, and if it does, at least my tax return check will be fatter.

I think it will be a bit like Reagan and Berlusconi. Trump will be largely teflon from media criticism and the people will gradually grow to like him based on his quirks and entertainment factor, which will mask his conflicts of interest and un-pc style.

Katharine Gorka named to Homeland Security Transition Team -

Her qualifications:

- virulently anti-muslim
- writes for Breitbart
- set up her own 'think tank' focusing on Islamic Terrorism
- Blamed Dubya and Obama for being too politically correct with Muslims
- Ted Cruz is a big fan

Says racial profiling of muslims is common sense :wenger:

I asked it before, got no answer, so I'll ask again: The common folk who voted for Trump what exactly do they now expect?

That he will bring back jobs? He will send away immigrants? He will restrict Wall Street greed? That he will support the middle class? How do they expect that Trump will help improve for their lives? Or did they just vote with the hope that the whole system will somehow be destroyed because of the_donald?

Are there a lot of people out there who believe that a billionaire exists who "doesn't belong" to the system? A billionaire who is "outsider"? Outsider ... really?

Palin being considered for VA Secretary. Trump knows these secretaries aren't front desk staff right?
At least she isn't Goldman. Two sacs already and one more being considered.

Yes, and he got 2 plants of Carrier to stop moving overseas already. No-one follows the news as obsessively as this thread does. And some people get their news from sources biased even more than this thread, where it is one and only one point of view.
So you will expect that for those who care about such things, their news will highlight the number of women he has appointed to key positions.
For the right-wing, they will highlight how Bannon etc are getting power.
For mainstream Republicans, they can look at Romney.
For people who thought US shouldn't intervene in Syria, they will look at Flynn.
For those who wanted torture, they can look at his CIA director.
For those who think his protectionism will MAGA, they can look at Carrier's factories.

And for those who oppose him, depending on their PoV, there are many different angles too - racist (Bannon), anti-poor (Goldman), insane (anti-vaccination), etc.

All truths are valid where you consider only 1 sliver of the story.

I have said it before and I have seen anecdotal evidence to suggest I am right, many are just falling back on the "Well at least he is not Hillary" line or "Hillary would have done far worse."

Yeah, kudos to him as he stopped 1000 jobs going to Mexico! BUT! at a ridiculous expense to the country as he offered them crazy tax exemptions and benefits to keep the plants open in the States. So yeah, I expect those 1000 people and their families are extremely grateful as they kept their jobs, but don't for one minute think it was a good deal for the country on a whole because it most certainly wasn't. If that's how he plans on going about things all the time then the USA will be bankrupt before he's in to his 2nd year in charge.

On the carrier deal. Sounds like big government to me. What happened to the free market? That approach is not sustainable and is merely a tool to show how great trump is. Incentives to stay? Which state/country has the best incentives? Race to the bottom coming up.

Langster beat me to it the basterd

Yup, that's exactly what I said in my post.

Trump will be like - the Federal govt didn't give away anything....the State of Indiana put up incentives funded by tax payers to keep ~1000 of the 2100 jobs.

Again, as with most things Trump - details and facts don't matter. All about the Talking Points, Headlines, Optics. He saved a 1000 jobs - for how long, at what cost and how - doesn't matter.

Here is what we know about the Carrier deal. The company had planned to close its Indianapolis plant and ship about 2,000 jobs to a new facility in Monterrey, Mexico, where it can get away with paying its workers $19 per day. Trump had been railing against the move on the campaign trail this year as an example of the creeping globalism that has hollowed out America’s manufacturing industry, and he promised to reverse it. If he couldn’t, he promised his voters, he would slap a 35 percent tariff on any products Carrier made in Mexico and then tried to import to the United States.

After the election and a call to its CEO from the new president-elect, Carrier’s parent company, United Technologies, hammered out a deal with outgoing Indiana governor and Vice President-elect Mike Pence. In exchange for tax breaks that will cost the state of Indiana $700,000 per year for an unspecified number of years, Carrier will keep 850 manufacturing jobs in the state, along with 300 headquarters and engineering jobs that were going to move to North Carolina. About 1,300 jobs will still move to the glorious workers’ paradise of Mexico.

In addition to state tax breaks, Trump promised that the overhaul of the corporate tax code and an easing of regulations will save Carrier many times the $65 million it had planned to save by moving its plant and 2,000 associated jobs out of Indiana.

It isn't big government, it is every right winger's wet dream. Less taxes and regulation leading to more employment and less Govt spending on benefits for unemployed people.

My apologies mate :(

Yep. Company B is on the phone now wanting their subsidy to keep the shareholders happy with nice quarterly dividends.

Exactly, unfortunately the details don't matter to those who don't understand things properly, or don't care, or can't be arsed to look a little deeper. :( As you rightly said, all they will see is he saved 1000 jobs, Go Drumpf! He's a hero. Not!

Les go with heavy handed government?...

I'll let it go this time :D

@langster @senorgregster
This is what I was talking about. People will read into that fact (carrier isn't moving abroad) what they want to. People here are reading an unsustainable image-building exercise. Others may see a commitment to domestic manufacturing.

Only if they want to be deliberately obtuse.

Manufacturing has gone - it is a fact. Nothing, Obama, Trump, Hillary or Bernie could/can do about it. The Rust belt can bitch and whinge all they want - and as is their right - they voted for a candidate who promised to help them - but, it is a promise he unfortunately won't be able to keep.

He had to cut a special deal to SAVE half the jobs...not create new jobs.

Hell, China is looking to move some manufacturing jobs to Africa - because it is cheaper

*On the face of it - I'm not against this move (just like I wasn't against the car manufacturers being bailed out...granted, it's not a like for like comparison - we constantly bitch about special interests etc etc...of course Carrier are the biggest winners here, but those workers and their families will be pretty freaking happy too. As for the tax payers helping to foot the bill - again, I'm sure folks in Indiana would much rather their tax money was used to help save jobs than some conversion therapy Mike Pence thinks will help to 'cure' gays.

I'm sure you'll agree its unsustainable on a large scale though, right? That there are not enough moves to be made to save every job that can either be executed in another location for less, or especially, that doesn't need the same level of human input anymore.
