@Neutral, this is exactly what proves the Dem position to be so flawed. Sanders showed the way to get those communities back on board, and yet in the election campaign I listened to so many politically involved Dems saying what you did, and basically making it sound like rural communities could change or just go feck themselves. It lost the last election and its cost the party for a decade now.

These are people who have seen the world around them changing at lightning speed, and in part because of things the Democrats have done such as NAFTA. They deserve to be helped and treated with respect, not just written off unless they somehow find magical solutions to problems not of their making. For people who live in rural towns where their factory jobs have been shipped off to Mexico or China, they don't necessarily have the ability to just re-train or relocate. That shit costs money, and increasingly money is something they just don't have available. They need a national or state program to help.

I'm not saying no one is ever going to open up another factory/mine - but, this nostalgic look back at the way things were...that's just not going to happen. These people and parties have been lying about why that is - and what needs to happen now.

And add to that, the migration of young people in those towns seeking job prospects and better lifestyle elsewhere, making them ghost towns. Even if manufacture plants open tomorrow, it'll take years to fix the decaying infrastructure, open up services to entice them to stay. The bleeding can be staunched somewhat but it'll never turn back to anything remotely resembling the post WW2 industrial period.
