It's so weird seeing a Spurs side with so much bottle and talent. The question is though, will they be able to hang onto the likes of Ali, Kane and Erikson over the next 2-3 seasons. As any further progress depends on that.

I'm now convinced that we'll be finishing 5th this season.

Not because I think we're generally worse than any of the teams above us - all have weaknesses. But that spell of terrible draws is going to be the death of us.

Every team in the top 6 will be dropping points until the end of the season, but we've already dropped too many, IMO.

Dropped too many points, you are 2 behind?

Chelsea - 1 draw - 3 loses
Liverpool - 5 draws - 2 loses
Tottenham - 6 draws - 2 loses
Man City - 3 draws - 4 loses
Arsenal - 5 draws - 3 loses
Man Utd - 6 draws - 3 loses

Only Chelsea and Liverpool are more than one result away from us.

I think they will. Their revenue will only increase, their key players are now on long term contracts and the new stadiums awaits as well, pushing revenue (and therefore wages) even further. Furthermore, they are now firmly established as one of the top sides and we all know Levy hardly ever sells someone without very tough negotiations. Keeping Poch is key IMHO, and this might be more difficult than keeping their most important players. I'm really impressed how they are improving under him, yesterday was a really impressive outing with Chelsea hardly getting a kick all game.

I'll be honest, I always had a soft spot for Tottenham and if we don't go all the way, I sure as hell hope they do. Proper club, and just imagine the laughs if they win a league title before Arsenal do again! (well, they'd have to finish ahead of Arsenal first which never seems to happen anyway, but you get the idea).
The league will be interesting the next few years, with United trying to get back to becoming the superpower we were with a great manager, Liverpool and Spurs challenging, City having Pep and of course Chelsea always in the mix. We shall see how Arsenal do after Wenger calls it a day, maybe the money floodgates finally open and they start to put in real title challenges. Exciting times ahead for football fans.

Depends on the players - If Ali has his heart set on a move to a Madrid or Barca and his agent is being tapped up he would probably not sign a new contract and with a couple of years left on his deal they would probably sell or if they went a few seasons without CL qualification - that said we are no different with Pogba.
Ultimately players have a lot of power but provided spurs improve and given they have a young squad, and will have the new stadium soon plus of course the increased PL money they have a good chance to kick on plus young english guy still close to friends and family plus living in London earning a fantastic wage so I suspect he is pretty happy there.

I thought that last season but then they went absolutely to pieces at the end in their last 4 games, showing up their lack of experience and their immaturity massively, with the loss at Newcastle and the mental breakdown in the Chelsea game being the lowlights.

If they've learnt from that then they could go the distance this season but they still have a very young team and manager.

That's the key for me - I was really impressed with the way we finished the match last night in total control without any panicing. Promising signs that we are maturing as a side although time will tell if we are able to keep improving.

I remember writing on here before the season started that they'd easily finish top 4 and I got a lot of laughs at the time. I still don't think people realise how good Pochettino is. They're only going to get better as the season goes on

I do however think this looks like Spurs' last big chance in a while though. The stadium move will drain the atmosphere. Big clubs will start testing their resolve for their big players as they'll need cash. I think Pochettino will start getting big offers this Summer too

Very impressed with Spurs defensively last night. Chelsea didn't offer much but they were first to every ball and handled Costa very well.

Ultimately the game was decided by Eriksen and his deliveries but great result and showed that Chelsea can be beaten.

My take on the game and taking nothing away from Spurs performance that was superb. Chelsea was overwhelmed in the first half but they were quite happy to sit back and absorb the pressure and try to do something on the counter and wait for the second half thus giving Tottenham time and space and most importantly confidence. And they dealed with this pressure quite comfortably before the added time when the first goal came. Then for a good few minutes in the second half when Chelsea got at them Spurs fell in panic mode and were lucky not to concede. And I think this is the key. You must not let Spurs play their way, you have to be more aggressive to get the ball off them, and patient with the ball, keep the ball to push them back slowly then you stand a chance. They don't have rapid players on the counter to really hurt you. But in full flow they are a lovely team to watch as is Chelsea, City and Liverpool if you let them play their way. Jose is pretty good at getting the game of football played as per his vision of the game so I have faith in him that he will have solution for Spurs. Also it doesn't matter if you beat the big teams if you slip at the smaller teams (see Liverpool, Arsenal). But I see Spurs in the top four this year. I think this is the year that Arsenal will fell out of the top four. The only question is who will join them. If we keep our form going that could well be City.

Didn't we just beat them a few weeks ago...?

Last night was a good win for Spuds, fair play to them.

But after watching them bottle it for literally decades, including last season, I always find it hard to imagine them winning a major trophy.

I've been a Spurs fan for over 35 years and like all Spurs fans have become used to utter failure however in all my years supporting Spurs I can't remember us having as good a coach or as solid a team as we have now. This is a young team who are improving and maturing. It will be tough as the league is incredibly competitive but we now have as good a chance as any other team at regularly being in the top 4 and challenging for the title.

They have two tough away fixtures at City and Liverpool now. If they can come away with two wins they look very good for the title. But even last season looked so :D

Really? For me the team that had the midfield of Bale, van der Vaart, Lennon, Modric and Parker comfortably beats this one. That was honestly a brilliant team that played some fantastic football.

Too bad Daniel Levy is there, otherwise we should be looking at buying Eriksen or Walker
Walker?! No thanks.

And Eriksen has plenty of dodgy games.

Spurs are a good side but I would take Alli and maybe Kane. Plus Alderweireld.

They had some brilliant games yes but I much prefer the current side - we are a real team, not just a group of talented individuals and we have probably the best manager we have had in my lifetime - this team has much more potential to be at a high level for a long time and to grow as a team.

Of course I'd love to have the likes of Bale, Modric, VDV in this side but I think this team has the potential to achieve much more than any Spurs side in the last 30 years.

There was that period between 85 and 90 where you finished 3rd 3 times and then won the FA Cup at the end of it, and if I'm honest, that's the best I can see you doing again. And that would be a good 5 years , no doubt.

I just don't see this Spurs team winning a PL. I mean last season I actually felt annoyed when you managed to finish below Arse again, I couldn't believe it.

It was the ultimate 'Spurs will always Spurs it up' moment, and for me, I just lost a lot of faith that when it really, really matters, this Spurs team won't capitulate, as per usual.

I could well be wrong though, and if I am, fair play to those young players. I like Alli, I like Kane, I like Rose.

And I will say this, if this Spurs side had Bale in it, you'd win the league no doubt.

Well only time will tell of course but my hope is that the disappointment of last season will help to mature the young players in the team and harden them. I was encouraged by how we controlled the last 20 mins of the match last night which in times gone by would normally have been very nervy. We have improved from last year and I think the mentality that Poch is trying to instill in the players could make the breakthrough to us finally becoming a serious challenger for the title. Fingers crossed I'm right!

We need to replace Valencia in a year or two. Walker would be decent.
Eriksen is better than Mata and would be very good to have rotating with Mikhitaryan etc.

I don't see where Alli would fit into our side. We already have Pogba, and we need to fit a playmaker (Carrick) and more of a ball winning/box to box player(Herrera) together with him. Alli is neither. If we were to somehow pair Pogba and Alli, we'd need a very defendive midfielder behind them, someone like Gustavo or Wanyama.

I'd prefer letting Rash or Martial or Griezmann replace Zlatan rather than Kane. Also, Alderweireld isn't significantly better than what we have, and I think we could get better players than him on the transfer market

Sure why don't you buy our entire team? Wanyama, Eriksen and Walker so far - why not go the whole hog? Though we can keep Alli as you don't want him, thanks for that! Oh and good luck finding a better defender than Alderwiereld on the transfer market.

This team is miles better than that one and the reason why is obvious, this group has a proper manager and that group didn't have any sort of manager.

They were brilliant to watch as they all played as individuals.

Put Bale in any if the top 6 teams and they would win the league.

And Poch, to serve as José's assistant until he retires and then take over himself...

And feck it, Levy too, Woody can do the buying, Levy can do the selling.

Am I forgetting anyone/thing...?
Will u at least leave us the kit man?

I remember writing on here before the season started that they'd easily finish top 4 and I got a lot of laughs at the time.

Who laughed at this? 6 teams were going to be in the hunt for top 4. It was always going to be a competitive season.

I still don't think people realise how good Pochettino is.

He is good, but Jose is better. ;)

They're only going to get better as the season goes on

So are we. And barring CFC, we have the best form.

Arry? That Spurs team destroyed Inter Milan the European champions. This Spurs team went out with a whimper in an easy group. I tend to use Europe as a measure of the strength of a team as we can't be too insular.

Go on then. And Janssen, you can keep him too.

On a more serious note, being as objective as possible, what would be your Spurs/United mixed 11?

Hmm - ok i'll give it a go.

Lloris (This is probably the most difficult position as I do have bias obviously but i'd rather have hugo although De Gea is magnificent)

Rose Vertonghen Alderweireld Walker ( I simply think we have better players and better defense overall)

Pogba Dembele Eriksen

Alli

Ibra Kane

Something like that though I could easily swap De Gea for Lloris without any complaint.

It's difficult and I'm trying my best to be unbiased but naturally I see more of Spurs players every week so I know what i'm getting. Valencia I rate as right back and was probably unlucky not to get in the team ahead of Walker tbf.

 I'm only joking. It was all hypothetical - if Spurs were to somehow have a big 70% off sale on their entire squad

Spurs/United side (on overall ability not form)

De Gea
Valencia Bailly Alderwierald Rose
Herrera Pogba
Mkhi Eriksen
Alli
Zlatan
(on form - halfway through)

Lloris
Valencia Bailly Alderwierald Rose
Wanayama
Herrera Pogba
Eriksen Zlatan Alli

I think that's close to being fair. I'd have De Gea ahead of Lloris.

I'd probably have Walker ahead of Valencia and Vertonghen ahead of Bailly as the Spurs back line work well together.

It's tough to pick from Dembele, Herrera and Wanyama, could be any of those 3 in all honesty.

But there is no way you can drop Kane, Pogba, Ibra, Alli or Eriksen really.

Only 2 united players? I know you're biased but you can at least try to be a little objective. Unbeleivable that you pick Lloris ahead of De Gea. I'd have Valencia and Bailly in the defense but it's close between them and the spurs players so fair enough. Also you can't have Alli there ahead of Mkhitaryan, that's just stupid.

De Gea
Valencia - Alderweireld - Bailly - Shaw
Wanyama
Alli - Pogba
Eriksen - Zlatan - Mkhitaryan

That team would crush yours
