The Redcafe Top 100 movies: Discussion and Preparation

i was actually gutted that they messed up the DOTD remake, i was looking forward to it as the original is possibly my favourite horror movie

what did you make of the Amityville remake?

Actually i had forgotten that one...the original Amityville was pretty poor, so anything would have been an improvement! Wasn't that bad...but thats not saying much!

The subsequent TCM and Hills Have Eyes are probably amongst the worse...and don't even get me started on The Hitcher! :nono:

Can you recommend any other Argentinian films? I've seen El Aura (it's sad what happened to Bielinsky btw) but I'd love to hear about anything else that hasn't got much international attention.

sure i give you the title and the imdb link:
"Luna de Avellaneda" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0347449/

"El Hijo de la novia" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0292542/

"Esperando al mesías" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0248001/

"Plata quemada" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0227277/

Have you lot seen Oldboy by Park Chan Wook, fantastic Korean movie, won awards at Cannes etc, its a great thriller and definately worth consideration

Is Melbourne Red going to bother, or is going to a gay Aussie cnut with a hairy mangina?

I don't he's logged in since I sent him the PM. I think he'll do it.

Yes Sam, I think we've all seen it. And I'm probably the only one who didn't like it.

There are quite a few films mentioned in this thread I havent seen. I would love to be so committed as so watch a load of classics before I make the list but it isnt going to happen, I have too much on at the moment.

However, I have made major progress with my list as I have been mulling it over in my head a lot since I found out about it. I currently have about 110 on the list but am operating a one-out-one-in kind of a policy as I think of new ones.

For me, on the whole debate Spoony and GB were having last week about influence, foreign films etc, I think it is very much a question of personal taste. GB said you have to be able to argue the case for any film in there, which I think is right. Influence might count in its favour, but factors like having a fantastic script or opening up a genre to a new audience are also important attributes to a film, I am finding in my own personal efforts.

I am also trying to cover bases with different genres and styles, rewarding films that are great in their respective fields. But I am not trying to cover all genres or styles.

Random observation: Star Wars films (originals) are not in my list. I think theyre overrated. not shit, but overrated. But for some reason their ommission is playing on my mind a bit.

Anyone seen a film called A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints? I really enjoyed that movie.

I'm in a similar situation...I'm not a Star Wars fan by any means, but maybe if I'm thinking about 'important' films, as well as my favourites, then maybe the original or Empire needs to be in there (if only for their legacy).

Still think I won't be losing any sleep if they don't make it though!;)

New Hope and Empire will probably make my list. I don't think you can leave them out.

Well, you are in for a treat with that little list.

12 Angry Men is awesome
Metropolis is ahead of its time, even now
Sunset Boulevard is one of the seminal film noirs
Strangelove is both hilarious, but chilling at the same time
While La Nouvelle Vague (film geek alert!!!) are amongst the best out there!

Oh, and yes, watch La Dolce Vita...supercool film!

12 Angry men was indeed awesome.
Casblanca was fantastic too.

Today'll I'll watch Metropolis and possibly The Third Man.

That's gangsta.

I'm also downloading The Maltese Falcon.

I'll also be checking out:

On the Waterfront
A Streetcar Named Desire
To Kill a Mockingbird
Double Indemnity
The Manchurian Candidate
Sunset Boulevard(mentioned earlier)
M
The Big Sleep
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid(which I think Mehro loves)

Try to watch them by next week!

Spooney - I can't believe you haven't seen any of these!!!!

Double Indemnity is THE Film Noir to end all Film Noir's...it is on my list and possibly vieing for top spot...everything about this film is perfect - direction, script, performance, music...you should love this film!

Likewise The Big Sleep...its on record that Raymond Chandler, the famous crime novelist and screenwriter for the film couldn't even work out the ending - and he wrote it!!! Chandler also co-wrote Double Indemnity with Wilder, by the way...which you might have been aware of already.

On the Waterfront - next to The Godfather, its Brando's greatest performance, although Streetcar also runs it close. I once did a lecture on this film regarding the social aspect of the time - i.e the Communist witch-hunts being done by McCarthy and Nixon.

All the rest are great too...not a huge fan of Westerns, but Butch Cassidy transgresses what a Western ought to be...some great dialogue and two genuine film stars (unlike those who pose as being today!).

Have fun, my friend...you are going to have a great week watching these classics!

Been planning to watch them for ages. This top 100 list has given me a kick up backside. I'll try and watch as many films as I can over the next month and a half.

I don't think I liked Sunset Bouelvard that much. It's been a wihle since I saw it. The Big Sleep, Butch Cassidy and To Kill a Mocking Bird are indeed all excellent. (Salvation didn't like To Kill a Mocking Bird I think. which makes it all the better) I haven't the others you've mentioned in that list.

Spoony, you'll have to see other Newman movies as well if you haven't already. cool Hand Luke, The Hustler and The Sting are all class. One of the finest actor ever imo.

Cool Hand Luke and The Hustler are indeed class, The Sting I've yet to see.

I'm watching Metropolis and The Third Man tonight.

Mockingbird was a shadow of the book. Could never deliver the signature mature-innocence of the varied topics especially racism as the book does. Plus the court scene was very impromptu
Book was better but I don't think they could have adapted it much better.

He's a great saucier, too.

Spoony, please do not make your list before watching The Sting. I don't want to over hype it but it is a great fecking movie. Infact, none of you make your lists before watching that movie.

It felt like the highlights of the book, which is never nice

Would've liked it had it been a Cuckoo's Nest sort of adaptation where they pulled it off at the expense of a brilliant character (Bromden)

You'll always be disappointed when comparing adaptations of books/novels to screen.

Yep, I'm planning to watch it in the next couple of weeks.

Post more recommendations. I want to see any many films as possible before I make my list. Would be folly to make a list without seeing the classics, in particular.
