The Redcafe Top 100 movies: Discussion and Preparation

All Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction fans must watch The Killing. An absolute must for the list imo. The first non-linear movie so quite obviously it has inspired a shed load of movies such as Memento, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, etc.

To be honest Mehro, I'd say any film fan should watch The Killing...brilliant brilliant movie from start to the great finish. Its true that they don't make 'em like this anymore!;)

Hammer, you putting any Chaplin movies in your list?

Modern Times is most certainly in there! I do like The Great Dictator as well, even though it gets a bit of a panning from some critics.

My great grandfather was in the same class as Charlie Chaplin - true, if rather trivial fact!!!;).

Anyone seen City on Fire? Tarantino ripped it off, apparently, more so than other films. I'll have to see it one day.

I'm definitely putting Modern Times but I think I might squeeze in City Lights as well. I don't remember much from the movie but I remember enjoying it.

I've seen loads of Laurel and Hardy films. No idea what they're called, though. Which ones are their best?

Sons of the Desert is very funny...less slapstick, but great comic dialogue and situations.

There is also one called Battle of the Century, which has the film world's largest custard pie fight. It starts off with just Stan and another man quite by accident. Ollie gets involved and then it escalates into over a hundred or so extras getting involved. Imagine the canteen food fight scene in Blazing Saddles multiplied by a hundred and lasting for about ten minutes! Loved it as a kid, so I showed it to my twins and they couldn't stop themselves...I'm sure one of them had an 'accident' in his pants by the end!:D

Now THAT'S what comedies should make you do!

I've seen those two. I think I've seen all their films. I don't enjoy them as much as I used to though. . .but they were a quality duo.

im starting to get the impression my list is going to have more contemporary, or "post-old" movies in it that other people's.

Nothing wrong with that Simon!

I think all this is a chance for film buffs to waffle on about great movies...age is immaterial!:)

An absolute dead cert for my list - one of the first down on the team sheet so to speak - is The Devils. Absolutely class film.

I would love to get hold of the uncut version of it one day.

Not a fan of Ken Russell generally, but I rate The Devils as his best!

Right, enough recommendations for the moment. How about a list of movies that others seem to rate and it won't make your lists?

Let me set the ball rolling:
Raiders of the lost Ark

Or for that matter any of the IJ series

Rebecca
Any of Star wars or LOTR
Casablanca
Rebel without a cause
Saving private ryan

Seen Raiders yet Crappy? I remember you stating you didn't when we had the whole dues ex machina debate

A whole load of Hitchcock 'classics' won't make mine including Vertigo. Saving Private Ryan should be banned from being inducted

As should Forrest Gump

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is on my list

I could argue that Saving Private Ryan should make the list. Forget the fact that its Hollywood smooze. The opening scene alone was great. The movie sets were fantastic and (most) of the acting was top notch.

people dont like it because it was Tom Hanks but if you look past it, there are positives from the movie

I agree GB, for the opening 30 minutes alone it should make anyones list, that was some of the best cinema I have ever seen. The film as a whole is also very good.

It will be on my list I think.

Finally got around to watching Garden State the other week, thought it was an excellent film, really enjoyed it.

After the 30 mins, the story was basically that of any Hollywood action movie. And dialogues were some of the most cliched one you will ever find in a war movie, cringeworthy IMO. Nothing do with Tom Hanks for me, in fact I like him as an actor. I thought the Thin red line which released in the same year was better than SPR.

One that I can also recommend which portrays the same historical period is Warren Beatty's Reds. Certainly not a Hollywood-version of history and tells the true story of the American Communist, Jack Read.
Excellent movie that I'd practically forgotten about. Manchester doubles for Moscow as a bonus for you Mancs.
