The RedCafe Boxing Thread

It's just an annoyance thing, it's like it's 'cool' to not respect your fellow professionals. There's promotion and then there's just talking pure shite trying to act the hard man before getting knocked out.

Well, I kinda see where you're coming from, but it comes with the territory. Imagine if boxers had the personality of Alan Shearer for example, devoid of any charisma, constantly streaming recycled quotes from the conveyor belt of public relations "Yeah, it'll be a tough match, but i've got the quality to win".

It wouldn't quite generate the same publicity, would it? The press conference earlier between Cleverly and Bellew + Degale and Groves was TV gold

Never understood why people dislike 'cocky' boxers. Its all for promotion you feckwits!

I don't care about trash talk, it's to be expected. it's a fight after all but what grates me with DeGale is that after the Olympics i liked him, during it i liked him, he was an honest and likable lad but now he's a pro he feels the need to just talk shit all the time which goes against what i thought was his personality. It seems very false.

If that's your actual personality, to get in the face of everyone then it can be quite entertaining. Like a James Toney for example but then he would talk and and back it up. DeGale has done nothing so far yet talks like he's done it all when before he was the "happy to be here" type. it's the falseness of his personality that grates.

constantly streaming recycled quotes from the conveyor belt of public relations "Yeah, it'll be a tough match, but i've got the quality to win".

But that's all it is now... just recycled shite from the other end of the spectrum, 'yeah I'm gonna smash his face in, KO him, I'm gonna KO him, he's going to hit the deck.'

Basically I see boxers running their mouth now and think 'yeah yeah blah blah heard it all before just fecking fight each other and see who the best boxer is, don't need this pantomime.'

I guess I just don't see the point in bigging yourself up when there's a chance you are going to get embarrassed and knocked out yourself. I prefer people who just get in the ring and get the job done and provide an exciting fight.

With DeGale as has just been said, it's not just the promo. It's just how he is everywhere, talking shite playing the big man all the time like he's 10 men. His Soccer AM interview was cringeworthy.

It's also not like the playful piss taking like say Mayweather on Sky Sports talking about Hatton, but it's actual sneering like he really considers himself to be on another level as a person to the rest of us. I hate that attitude in people. I prefer the matey pally guy to that.

it's got a time and a place but it's such a put on with DeGale. His ring entrance is embarassing, his whole attitude and style is an embarassment and it seems so manufactured to create hype and to be fair it does work. People want to see him lose.

Groves is a far more likable character and i think it'll be a great fight, i want Groves to win but if DeGale does i hope he doesnt take a step back, i hope he starts gunning for the big names and is a busy fighter that proves he isnt all talk but for a fighter who hasnt even won anything big or even had a tough fight it's embarassing.

I mean look at Prince Naseem, he was as cocky and arrogant as anyone but you could at least tell it was a bit tongue in cheek. Or could you?

Bellew pulled. Couldn't make weight. Shocking.

Sky should refund anyone who has paid for this card and stick it on Sky Sports 1.

WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly will now defend his title against Aleksy Kuziemski. As previously reported, Tony Bellew was unable to make the required division limit of 175-pounds in a safe manner, and promoter Frank Warren, and the champion, refused to face Bellew in a non-title catch-weight bout.

This is the second opponent switch for Cleverly in the last few days, after previous opponent Juergen Braehmer withdrew from the contest on Tuesday and then Bellew stepped in on late notice - but the British Boxing Board of Control denied him permission to fight, at 175, on safety grounds - after Bellew failed a weight check on Thursday evening.

"He fulfills all the criteria," Warren told Sky Sports. "It's been a nightmare to say the least. But we've managed to keep the show together. We've still got James DeGale and George Groves fighting. But this has been a nightmare."

The unbeaten Welshman, declared World Champion by the WBO today after Braehmer was stripped, now tackles the number 14 ranked Kuziemski who was considered as a challenger to Cleverly before Bellew put himself forward for the fight.

From Swiece in Poland, but now based out of Hamburg, Germany, Kuziemski has a good record of 21 wins from 23 fights and is the former WBO Intercontinental/German/EBA Light-Heavyweight Champion.

"I think I've been through everything in the last 48 hours, the main thing for me is that I'm still fighting and that all my hard work has not gone to waste," said Cleverly.

"It's been a mad time, but I've been through this before and I'm professional enough to deal with it, let's face it, any problems after this fight will be nothing in comparison,"

"I've got to get my head round to focusing on Kuziemski now, he is the man in front of me on Saturday night so I've got to forget about Bellew and Braehmer altogether,"

"He's got a good record, he's highly ranked and he's been in with some good guys so he won't be a pushover."

The fight takes place at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday night.

can't believe this is still pay per view, customers who have ordered should be refunded and it should be switched to sky sports.

It's a PPV because the undercard is still stacked.
Smigga, Gavin, Saunders, Sexton and Cook all fighting as well as the Degale/Groves fight although I suspect that will be made the headliner to keep people in as nobody will really care about Clev vs the Pole.

And if you're pissed about your 15 quid, I paid to go see it so nobody feels more rushed than me!

I don't agree with that. It happened in the Thompson fight, but I don't recall it happening since. He had no problem going 12 with Valuev, and did his best work at the end of that fight.

I think as Bam said below he paces himself, and whilst his power means he is always a threat he isn't as blistering late on as he is when he starts a fight. On the other hand if you give him reason Pac will thrash you same pace for 12 rounds. That's more what I meant

Question for the boxers, Lance etc.

The style of the Bitchkos, with their jab arm extended almost in the face of the opponent is surely an illegal move in boxing. I'm no expert, i love the sport of boxing but i've never read through the rules or done any formal training but surely this technique of having one hand basically pawing around the face/chest of your opponent is an illegal move. If your not throwing a punch your basically using your reach to obscure your opponents view and to hold them off at all times. What do you make of this?

It's unethical (I don't know the exact rules either!) but I couldn't see it being illegal. It's awkward but a fast counter puncher or a bob and weaver and suddenly using his reach to keep opponents at bay might not be so effective.

I am pretty sure that gay, pawing shit that Wlad does is illegal. Lewis used to come in for criticism for it as well, although I don't think he was as bad as Wlad. The common denominator between the two is obvious.

Unfortunate that the Cleverly fight is off. Will there be a substitute opponent?

From what I have seen of DeGale and Groves in the pro ranks, I think this will be an easy win for DeGale. I hope I am spectacularly wrong.

It's frowned upon but you can get away with it, most use it as a range finder to be sure that your oppo is in punching distance. Another of Wlad's tactics is to stand on your foot to ensure you are in range (he did it to Ibragimov in one of the WORST fights I've seen in my life!)

Seen that before, class. That's the sort of thing I want to happen to all these cocky cnuts. 'Yeah I'm gonna KO him, come *** day ees gonna be screamin ma name innit bruv. He doesn't stand a chance, he be cryin for his momma.' WHAM KOd in one. Serves you right you cocky twat.

It's not a proper video though, he has black gloves on when doing his ring entrance and red gloves on when fighting.

I'm not pissed about it, I would never pay £15 for non-headline fight night is all. DeGale isn't headline worthy yet.

I would argue that Cleverly isn't, either.

I have no qualms ponying up for quality fights, but the rush to get certain fighters on PPV years before they actually warrant it, is killing the sport.

Neither are it's just that Degale Groves is one the bigger domestic fights that can be made right now whilst Cleverly was meant to be/is a world title fight

I was just going to post this after seeing it on Boxingscene. Did you see the fight?

Yeah there were a couple of streams on Myp2p. Jones looked pretty good for the first couple of rounds but just couldn't keep up.

The stoppage was unbelievable though. Jones was completely out on his feet and the ref just stood there and let Lebedev take another swing. Looked really serious for a few minutes. He came so close to lasting the distance as well, it literally happened right at the end of the final round.

I expect that there'll be some videos knocking about later. You'll be shocked by the ref when you see it. Ridiculous incompetence.

Diabolical refereeing. Lebedev even turned to the ref to tell him to stop it before he threw the last punch. It was a scary few minutes when Roy was unconscious on the floor. It was a surprisingly entertaining fight though. Gutsy effort from Roy with the odd moment where his old class shoen through. Some of those lead rights he threw were brilliant, and I thought Lebedev was gone for a split second at the end of the 9th. Roy needs to call it quits.

Yeah Jones landed some nice shots (and yeah he defo hurt Lebedev in the 9th) but never really followed them up... don't think his energy levels would allow it. He's still got his handspeed though, which I find pretty remarkable.

Anyway tonight should be fun. DeGale will look class again I think, he keeps improving with every fight and I see it happening again tonight. This is worth a watch if you haven't seen it btw:

Piss funny. As for Hopkins-Pascal, will probs just download that tomorrow cos I'm knackered but there's been plenty of friction between them recently. Pascal implied that Hopkins is using performance enhancers so Hopkins replied with some massive rant at a press conference and warned people not to be shocked if Pascal "dies in the ring", or summat like that...

Unbeaten rivals Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury couldn’t wait until they meet this July to sort out their differences, the heavyweight pair decided to have it out while attending the James DeGale-George Groves British super-middleweight grudge bout at the O2 Arena in London.

While undefeated Frankie Gavin was fighting Young Mutley for the WBO Inter-Continental welterweight title - Fury, 22, and 27 year-old Chisora were spotted by spectators at ringside involved in a heated argument that turned into a mini-brawl involving several people. The melee was defused in a matter of minutes.

The two will meet this summer for Chisora’s British and Commonwealth belts and it seems another huge grudge match is now brewing with both fighters eager to start the battle at The Millenium Dome.

Moments after the incident, Chisora (14-0, 9 KO's) posted on his Twitter account - "It's not my fault, Tyson has to do his own promoting because his promoter can't raise money for the fight."
