The RedCafe Boxing Thread

It is though. Not fair, but it is the way how the world works. When people look at his legacy, they'll see a boxer who hasn't defeated any hall of famer on his career. That is problematic.

I think that there have been many boxers who were great but people avoided them, and no one remember their names. Charley Burley for example apparently was ducked from most top boxers, and he never received a title shot, Sugar Ray Robinson was ducked by many too and needed more than 70 fights to get a title shot. Archie Moore needed 16 years of winning in order to get his title shot.

In GGG's case, it is a bit different cause he isn't chasing a title, instead he holds the belts. It also doesn't help that middleweight is a poor division, with not many quality boxers.
A recent example is Juan Manuel Marquez. He was ducked by every elite level fighter until Pacquaio agreed to fight him in 2004 when he was already into his 30's. It took him until he was 33 to get another elite/hall of fame level guy (Barrera) to take the risk. His reflexes had slowed down and he was getting hit more but he did adapt and went on to cement a legacy as one of the greatest of his era and in Mexican Boxing history. I followed his career closely (he's my favorite of all-time) and it was frustrating for years and years but sometimes some guys just get frozen out like that.

Hopefully the Canelo fight gets made for September now.

A big part of me doesn't want to see Canelo get the massive payday no doubt he'll get. I wouldn't be disappointed if GGG tells him to feck off regarding any rematch in Sept. I heard that dick, De La Hoya said GGG needs Canelo more than the other way round. Money wise maybe, but seriously, pisssssss offfff!

Let’s be honest here, Golovkin is desperate for one more Canelo payday. Canelo will still make $5m as a bare minimum against any old bum.

Yeah I get what you mean, but I want GGG to cement his legacy and I feel beating Canelo would go a long way to doing that.

Also feel Canelo/Golden Boy made the fight in the first place because he was hoping GGG was past his best and had more chance of beating him as there were rumours he avoided the fight for two years. Maybe GGG is past his best but still Canelo couldn't beat him.

Yeah, it will happen but the way Canelo and Golden boy are acting like they hold all the major cards when it's Canelo who got the suspension is infuriating.

Hope GGG smashes him. Canelo is improving all the time, you can see him evolving tactically whearas GGG is just more crude, not because he can't box, (I think he's a lot smarter a boxer than people give him credit for) but because against the majority of his opponents he doesn't need to. The way Golovkin took that huge shot in their fight makes me feel confident that he'll be fine. In Vegas though, he'll need to make sure the result doesn't go to a decision.

I should like Golden Boy since they are local and do local shows for me but I think they are dirty. I think they have the highest % of absolutely baffling scorecards. GGG won't be allowed to beat Canelo. It's always one bought judge, one who gives everything they can to Canelo and then a judge who's allowed to score the fight correctly. He's had an outrageous scorecard in every big fight.

The only thing I'll give GBP is that with the exception of protecting Canelo from GGG they have allowed their fighters to fight elite opponents on other promoters shows as the B side for example the upcoming Lomachenko-Linares, Pacquaio-Mattheyse, Russell-Diaz shows. Their guy is the decided underdog in each. I did read that Canelo is aover 100% of their revenue though and heard some whispers he's unhappy with them and potting his way out. We'll see.

I'm still in a bit of shock about Haye tbh. I knew he wouldn't be the fighter he was in his prime, but he was absolutely shot to bits. He must've known this before he started promoting the rematch. He couldn't move freely, he couldn't generate power, his reflexes were gone and he had no chin. I'm gutted. I wanted him to avenge his defeat and retire.

Interesting to hear about possible discontentment They (Canelo and GBP) deserve each other, I would bet on any divorce being ugly, I wouldn't feel sorry for either!

Thanks for the Loma link. Linares-Loma is going to be one hell of a fight. The type of fight that doesn't need hype. Cannot wait for this one.

I'm a sucker for buying PPVs , I just can't help myself, but with this one, I watched a stream. I can't remember the exact point I realised there's nothing he wouldn't do or say if it rewards himself to do so. He's so full of shit and and he doesn't give a damn about his fans. He'd probably sell his mother if someone paid a few quid. He can't feck off quickly enough.

Canelo's been very loyal with them especially after all this stuff it took to get his signature in the first place. He recently snapped at GBP president about his recent surgergy and them not telling the truth. I think there's already discontent and he probably wants to do his own company. He's at that stage now where he can do his own thing and the fights sell themselves almost to his audience. I don't think GBP are necessarily a great company since Schaefer and Haymon took all their clients elsewhere. I think their heart is in the right place as far as making big fights, developing talent but I just don't think they are that good.

I know De La Hoya doesn't do the day to day handling of everything that he's a spokesman etc; but he also doesn't have a great image. He's a drug addict, a drunk who's been exposed in many embarrassing ways and when it came to trying to promote GGG-Canelo I he'd take too much time slamming Mayweather-McGregor which isn't a good look IMO and if anything he was promoting their show for them when he had the best show on the market. He puts his foot in his mouth too much. I don't know that GBP has a great future. Without Canelo I think they'd have already closed.

I think the choice to not step in the ring with someone who might Polax you is already a fair system.

That’s an interesting way to look at it, makes a lot more sense when you put it like that. It’s strange in this case, as GGG has all the belts and still people won’t fight him

Gassiev vs Usyk this weekend, along with Lomachenko vs Linares. Top level fights on show, shaping up to be quite the weekend. If the UFC card had a little more sauce it would’ve made for quite the few days of fighting.

Didn't realise Usyk v Gassiev was this weekend as well, belter of a weekend for boxing. Usyk and Loma for me, think Loma might stop Linares too but it will be his most difficult challenge to date. Same with Usyk.

This BBC3 AJ-Wlad recap meetup at Wembley was pretty interesting. Two absolutely genuine guys, a different level humility - Wladimir is beyond class, that could never be in doubt. Honest, humble and extremely respectful. I hope AJ can continue to show the same characteristics going forward and I believe he will, it is what's making him a massive hit. Different in in the ring obviously.

It'll be fun watching Fury and/or Wilder build ups when and if they fight Joshua.

Usyk-Gassiev is not this weekend. It was postponed. New date and venue should be known by Monday.

I saw a vid on AJ’s insta about something like this and had no idea what it was on so i’ll Go have a look for that. I actually just came on to see if anyone had watched the Netflix documentary called the road to Klitschko. Cameras followed AJ for two years and it was really intresting especially seeing his immediate reaction with his pals after fighting Whyte.
Worth a watch, Klitschko is again just class in it in his segments with AJ.

It's not this weekend. It's going to be rescheduled.

Ah thought I hadn't heard too much about it the past week. New WBSS looks immense in the Bantamweight division. Burnett, Tete, Rodriguez, 3 top class fighters plus Inoue close to agreeing. Really tough fights. Apparently Rigo was offered the chance but felt he would struggle to make the weight for the competition. I think Loma took his soul.

Had a piss next to Anthony Crolla at the game last night. Embarrassed myself thinking I was best mates with him when I was drunk.
Lovely guy.

Yeah, he just got careless. Linares the bigger man, and snappy punches, Loma just gotta be more careful and he'll win a wide decision still, I think.
