NEW YORK – Veteran contender Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson has been tapped to replace the injured Mikkel Kessler in the Super Six World Boxing Classic and is preparing to meet Allan Green in a Group Stage 3 bout on Saturday, Nov. 6, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast), it was officially announced today by SHOWTIME Sports® Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Hershman.
The 12-rounder between the Jamaican-born Johnson (50-14-2, 34 KOs), of Miami, Fla., and Green (29-2, 20 KOs), of Tulsa, Okla., will emanate from MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas and open the telecast on SHOWTIME. In the second half of the excellent Nov. 6 SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING doubleheader, undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Lopez (29-0, 26 KOs) of Puerto Rico will defend his title against two-division world champion Rafael Marquez (39-5, 35 KOs) of Mexico City.
A former International Boxing Federation (IBF) light heavyweight champion, Johnson is a hard-knocking veteran who has fought and defeated some of the best fighters of this era. Seemingly always in close, rough, crowd-pleasing fights, Johnson owns victories over Roy Jones Jr. and Antonio Tarver, among others.
Johnson has appeared in seven world title fights and now has an opportunity to reestablish himself as one of the world’s elite prizefighters.
“I want to thank Showtime for including me in their Super Six tournament,” he said. “Having dedicated so many years to the sport of boxing, it is gratifying to still be considered worthy of competing with some of the top fighters in the world and on such a prestigious platform.”
Regarding the super middleweight limit of 168 pounds, at which Johnson has not fought since 2000, he stated: “I typically weigh in at 172 pounds for my light heavyweight fights. I will have no trouble making the 168-pound limit as a super middleweight.”
Group Stage 3, the final Stage of the point-based round-robin portion of the tournament, will determine the four fighters who will advance to the single-elimination Semifinals. As per tournament rules, a replacement fighter enters the Group Stage tied with the last place fighter—in this case, Green with zero points. Both men go into the Nov. 6 showdown on equal ground. But only one will have the opportunity to qualify for the Semis. The winner of Green vs. Johnson—with either 2 or 3 points—would need help from Andre Ward and/or Arthur Abraham to qualify. (See current standings below)
Allan Green, who was outmatched in his Group Stage 2 bout against Ward, is ready for the challenge ahead of him. Inspired to redeem himself, his intense preparation will continue as planned despite the change from Kessler to Johnson. No matter the opposition, Green needs a strong performance in Group Stage 3 to advance.
Following Nov. 6, Group Stage 3 will conclude on Saturday, Nov. 27, on SHOWTIME when Ward of Oakland, Calif., faces Andre Dirrell of Flint, Mich., in a battle of American stars and Abraham of Germany takes on former World Boxing Council (WBC) titlist Carl Froch of England, in a matchup that pits arguably the hardest punchers in the Super Six at Hartwall Areena in Helsinki, Finland. Ward-Dirrell will be televised live; Abraham-Froch will be shown on same-day delay.

Ken Hershman, the general manager of Showtime Sports, has announced that Andre Dirrell has withdrawn from the Super Six Boxing Classic with an injury. The nature of the injury was not disclosed. Hershman said WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward will still fight on November 27 against a replacement opponent.
Dirrell comes on the heels of WBC champion Mikkel Kessler pulling out with an eye injury and being replaced in the tournament by Glen Johnson, who faces Allan Green in the third stage of the Super Six on November 6 in Las Vegas. Green had replaced Jermain Taylor who withdrew after the first stage of the tournament.
There are many who believed all along that Dirrell and Ward, because they are close friends, would never fight each other. When asked for his opinion on the matter, Hershman said "that's not my job" in terms of pursuing whether or not the injury is legit.
"We have a few options on the table" said Hershman, when asked if there is a replacement in mind.
Hershman said there is a chance that the upcoming fight involving Ward could be held "outside of the tournament" because Ward has 4 points in the tournament and advances to the semi-finals, win or lose, based on his score tally. Ward's next fight will likely take place at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, where his last two bouts have taken place. Ironic since there was a big dispute between the Ward and Dirrell camps over the venue location.
Hershman said "the Super Six will continue and the semi-finals will happen next year."
Argh for feck's sake. It never looked like they wanted to fight each other in the first place. Who gives a feck if they're mates, Yohnny Perez and Abner Mares are quite close and they still beat the shit out of each other a few months ago.
Well that's the Super 6 fecked good and proper now.
Well what's gonna happen now then? I'm a bit confused as to what Dirrell pulling out of this fight actually means. Is he out of the Super 6 now or is their fight being rescheduled? Will Ward's new opponent be drafted into the tournament as a replacement?
Typical of boxing, that something which sounds so good in theory, turns out to be a complete fecking disaster.
Maybe they could squeeze in Ward/Bute.
Yeah me too, to be perfectly honest. Been sent a link to this interview and if you listen to it (quite a lengthy interview but very interesting... starts at 55 mins, player at bottom of page) Audley comes across very well, and also seems to be a genuine fan of the sport, which is refreshing. Really started warming to him since this fight got announced, and even though I'm aware it's not great for the sport in general if Audley wins, I'm proper rooting for him. Gwan Audley!Too right. Gutted that its all fecked up so royally.
On the upside, November's shaping up to be a good month of boxing. Johnson-Green and Lopez-Marquez is a great card, I'm excited as feck against my better judgement by Manny-Margarito, hoping Froch gets beheaded by Abraham. I'm ashamed to say it as the fight should never have been made but I'm semi looking forward to Haye-Harrison, just because one of them is going to be knocked out viciously and they'll deserve it.
Not only has unbeaten British heavyweight Dereck Chisora signed to fight IBF/IBO/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko on December 11 in Mannheim, Germany - he also signed to fight Vitali Klitschko next for the WBC championship.
Chisora's promoter Frank Warren has revealed that his fighter signed a contract which directs him, if he beats Wladimir, to fight Vitali next. Vitali defends his title on Saturday against former WBO champion Shannon Briggs in Hamburg, Germany.
The contract is similar to the one offered to WBA champion David Haye. Haye turned the contract down, with claims that the Klitschko brothers tried to trap him in a deal where he couldn't fight anyone other than a Klitschko brother for his next three fights. Chisora was happy to sign a deal that gave him an additional championship fight with a good purse attached to the contest.
"When I talked to him about the opportunity, he insisted that I took it. Unlike David Haye, for Dereck this is about the challenge, not the money. He really believes that he can beat Wladimir. It's in the contract that if he beats Wladimir then he has to face Vitali next, but he's got a big job ahead of first," Warren said.
incredible that that got signed, are there really no fights out there for the klitchkos at all? i mean the guy has only had 14 fights. Does he stand even a remote chance?
Looking forward to most of those but the ones in bold are all potential fights of the year for me... all in the space of a couple of weeks as well. About time really because it's been a bit of a dull year in boxing. The fights this month are boring, there's nothing interesting till November, but from there on in there are some great fights to look forward to:
Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Rafael Marquez
Allan Green vs. Glen Johnson
Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito
David Haye vs. Audley Harrison (ok, should not have been made but will watch it)
Sergio Martinez vs. Paul Williams
Juan Carlos Burgos vs. Hozumi Hasegawa
Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Michael Katsidis
Arthur Abraham vs. Carl Froch
Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana
Wladimir Klitschko vs. Dereck Chisora (probably same as Haye/Harrison, but still interesting)
Jean Pascal vs. Bernard Hopkins (hope Pascal retires him)
