The RedCafe Boxing Thread

Boxing needs an organization that makes the fights....its bullshit we are having to go through another mayweather/pac debacle with alvarez/ggg.

Lets hope that GGG responds to these comments. I want this fight to happen, and I want GGG to embarrass the little bitch.

He did a Riddick Bowe in one side, and somehow claims that it was GGG who didn't want the fight. Yeah, sure, we all believe you.

He didn't say that, they guy translated it wrong. He said that they're still waiting to hear from Golovkin's team.

ok, but waiting to hear from Golovkin for what?
Golovkin was mandatory and Canelo gave up the belt. Even without words, that says something....
I remember after the Amir Khan fight was it, Canelo said he wanted Golovkin. It was all set up, Golovkin was mandatory, Golovkin wanted it

Canelo obviously didn't want it at 160, probably offered low money too

Good luck Kell. If he has ambitions of fighting Canelo he could become this generations Ricky Hatton - a solid career where contests against the very best in weights around him then shortened everything afterwards.

I think Canelo has one more fight in May before fighting Golovkin in September.

I reckon Lemieux and Brook are the frontrunners for the May fight.

It's always tough for boxers, they can't win really with regards to fights happening. Fair play to Kellerman for taking shots at DLH etc instead of Canelo. I don't think many boxers are to worried about who they fight really, the promoters just want to protect their assets. I can't stand DLH, he's a huge hypocrite with most things he does and is really hanging Canelo out to dry by making him take most the flack with the GGG stuff. Him standing there smiling like a dick whilst Kellerman was basically slating him was just bizarre to. It was a predictable result again and the GGG Fight really needs to happen but DLH will do everything he can to stop it I'd guess.

That is my guess too. Likely they offered GGG the fight in 154 and some ridiculous split of money, knowing that he won't accept those terms. If he would have accepted, they would have added other things, similar to how Floyd did with Pacquiao back then.

The fight should happen at 160 lbs, with 60-40% split for Canelo (or 70-30% if Canelo's team insist hard on that). For the weight it is a bit ridiculous them wanting GGG to drop on weight considering that Canelo is arguably heavier than him on the boxing day in all of the fights. And for the split, while GGG is the better boxer, Canelo brings more money to the table.

It is strange, really. He was a boxer who went against any other boxer, without fear, but now being a dick. I liked him a lot, but now cannot stand him at all.

His anti-Floyd essays look now more hypocritical than ever considering that he is basically denying the biggest match in boxing to happen.

Yeah his Floyd stuff if the worst, I think he's still hugely bitter about that loss (and the fact afterwards Mayweather easily beat Canelo as well.) I think DLH was over rated as a boxer anyway, he lost nearly every big fight he was in he was just hugely marketable to the Mexcian market and also the American one being an Olympic gold medallist but you're right he did fight pretty much all the big names. I can only guess he's seen Mayweather's career and earnings and thought he's done it the best way considering he's the richest boxer ever, I can't see Canelo ever getting that big but with him fighting an average of 2 fights a year he has probably 24 or so more fights left in him at the moment and they probably think GGG needs him more than Canelo needs GGG so they may as well sit on the fight.

Not even sure about this. GGG seems to be more motivated from belts than money. Canelo still shamelessly have the Ring middleweight title () but it seems that GGG is more interested for Saunders fight which will give him far less money. Still, he would be happy to fight Canelo.

De La Hoya should propose a fight which isn't humiliating for GGG (lets say no 80-20% share or something that ridiculous) in 160lbs. But I think that they are very afraid that Canelo would lose (or even worse, get KO) which might lower his status as the new boxing face.

He does seem to want a legacy of being undisputed which is admirable. I think a lot of that also gives him pulling power as well as he will have all the titles there. Who knows though.

Canelo being the face of boxing is definitely true of current boxers. Weird though cos arguably the face of boxing is still Mayweather despite being retired. Quite worrying for all current boxers and probably shows how desperate they are for new stars.

Hearn must be wanting to set up the winner vs Tony 'Hollywood' Bellew at some sort of catchweight after he saw what Usyk was capable of doing.

Backing Ward all the way. Too intelligent, despite Kovalev also being a superb boxer.

Biggest fight since MayPac? I think yes.

I also expect a very good fight, but if I was a betting man, I would have gone for Kovalev. It will also be one of the few fights I have watched when I won't prefer any of the boxers. Both of them are top boxers, and kudos to them for facing each other, instead of doing what Canelo is doing with GGG.

Easily the biggest fight since MayPac, but arguably the best potential fight in many years (considering the shit show that Pacquiao/Mayweather was).

You have to hand it to both fighters, though, neither is known for ducking anyone (maybe Kovalev with Stevenson, but I've never really rated Stevenson that much, and it's debatable, so who cares). This fight makes sense on every level. It's what boxing fans want, and it's good for both of them. If it's anyway contentious, we can expect a rematch. Lucrative and hopefully entertaining.

I don't know if it's the biggest fight since Mayweather vs. Pacquaio to be honest. In terms of an actual legitimate contest then I'd agree it is. How are you ranking it? If it's box office sales I dunno if it'll do really well, Canelo vs. Khan didn't do brilliant and both are arguably bigger names than both Ward and Kovalev. Neither are particularly huge draws (there's a reason Ward rarely fights outside of California.)

I'm looking forward to it though, it's rare we get 2 fighters at their peak fighting each other. I think Ward takes it, I can't see it being hugely entertaining either if I had to guess it will be similar to Mayweather vs. Pacquiao for entertainment as well.

Glad it's on Sky though, wouldn't of paid to watch it but will watch on normal Sky Sports.

Also, Golovkin had Mosley as a sparring partner. Watching the video below. It's almost exactly how the fight went. Perfect planning.

Ward Kovalev isn't a big fight really. Won't make nearly as much money as Canelo-Cotto, or even Canelo-Khan.

Think Ward will win it though.

Maybe it isn't that big to people who don't follow boxing, I guess. Neither is a superstar outside of the ring.

It's a shame it won't be really cos it's 2 of the best boxers in the world fighting at their peaks. It should get far more hype than it does but then it's the problem at the moment of the inability to create stars. Any momentum Ward had over here after Froch was pretty much killed by the fact he got injured/had disputes with management and barely fought. Since that fight every fight he has been in has been pretty dull or fighting people he is way better than.

Except Canelo and GGG there isn't many legitmate boxing stars at the moment. Joshua will get there I'd expect but he won't fight people closely matched to him like Kovalev and Ward are doing for a long time yet.

Fury withdraws from rematch on mental health grounds.
I dread to think how severe this is when he isn't passed to fight based off of it.
Hope he gets all the help he needs

is it confirmed mental health? i've only seen that he's 'medically unfit' to compete

Apparently ESPN have seen the doctors report, rumours he could be sent away to stay in a facility as well.
Sad news if it's true

i'm not even remotely surprised. regardless though very sad to hear.

looking at it from a detached perspective - hopefully seeing a high profile sportsman going through this type of struggle will prompt more people to consider and possibly seek help for their respective mental health concerns.

edit: just in case - to clarify my "i'm not surprised" remark I wasn't being flippant. i've got plenty of experience with mental health issues (not just my own, heh) and felt that he clearly suffers from his own demons.

I can't see how anyone could possibly like him as a person.

It's each to their own really. Plenty of boxers or anyone in the public eye have some kind of history and/or controversial opinion. I'd imagine most of us do as well.

Mayweather, Fury, Tyson, Pacquiao etc have all views or have done something in the past. I think it's better to be detached from their views sometimes to be honesdt. Would end up disliking most people.
