The problem was at the end of those exchanges Blackwell would get a couple of shots off and look clear headed. He had also seriously rocked Eubank in the mid rounds at the end of one of those exchanges. It wasn't unfeasible that Blackwell could stop Eubank. It is difficult because that was the biggest fight of Blackwell's career, if he did pull of the win then he would have made a bit of a name for himself and would be looking at career high paydays.

I remember fights like VK vs Shannon Briggs, Guerrero vs Katsidis, Macklin vs Moore and Valero vs De Marco (even the commentators were audibly wincing at some of the shots De Marco took) I didn't feel the fight last night was at that level where I was really feeling massive concern for Blackwell. I think the fact that Blackwell is such a warrior probably played a part in my perception though.

Aye, I agree with all of that. I don't think the referee should be blamed. If anything the corner could have considered pulling their man out, but even they didn't seem to register that Blackwell was in any distress.

Boxrec says that Dennis Bakhtov put Gjergjaj down in his last fight but was then dropped and out pointed thereafter in the fight.

Dennis Bakhtov was demolished in 2 by Anthony Joshua.

He's also only been 12 rounds once. In that same fight.

In boxing, not everything is as relative as that of course, the KD could have been an off balance thing or AG could have had a bad camp etc but on the basis of that Haye should win well. Again.

Shannon Briggs just "invaded" the press conference in the most forced theatrical manner ever. WWE stuff.

The fact that he's an undefeated Albanian boxer I've never heard sort of told me he was shit, tbh. I had to check Boxrec too

My iPhone officially hated typing that surname into google too

The problem with the Haye stuff is who do people want him to fight really? There was talk of Shannon Briggs and he "crashed" haye's presser but that guy has been fighting jokes since Vitali fight (aand Haye is right he got battered in that fight, i.e. a Nick Blackwell situation!) Similar to FC Ronaldo comment re the guy who's name I won't try and spell Briggs went 12 rounds with a guy Joshua knocked out within 2 rounds. I dunno who people want Haye to face at the moment to be honest, he is easing his way back in but you can't really blame him.

Easing his way back in?

Andre Ward proves that you don't have to 'ease' your way back in. Haye is just taking nice little earners on his Dave deal before he fights someone with a pulse. He would beat Del Boy, for example, tomorrow IMO. His last opponent was unbeaten as well. I have followed Haye since day one but his work at heavyweight has been little more than a circus. I lost faith in him after the Wlad fight, all that talk and he didn't even go out on his shield and then he blamed his loss on a poorly toe!!

Andre Ward was (and probably now is) up there with the top pound for pound fighters in the world. There's very few that come close to him really I wouldn't say Haye is that level.

Since Andre Ward's comeback from his inactivity (1 and a half years compared to Haye's 3 and a half years for what it's worth) he's fought Paul Smith Jr and Sullivan Barrera. Hardly brilliant fights are they? He's also fighting them with double the rest time as Haye. Ward also wasn't injured the whole time he was in disputes with a trainer so he probably trained a lot more than Haye to keep fit and therefore can take on a few bigger fights if he wanted to, though I wouldn't say he is at the moment.

For me it makes sense to ease your way back in. I don't get the problem with him making money either. It is his job, do you want him to do it for free? Look at someone like Hatton, made a comeback and it ended straight away by fighting someone to good you'd argue, if he fought 3 or 4 before that who knows what would of happened? Like Haye or not and think it's a circus or not but his comeback has been done brilliantly for me, his fight sold out and got huge viewing numbers. He'll probably have another couple of shit fights after this and fight a big name I think, maybe for a title.

Again who would you have him fight? Look at the "big" names in his division, Fury wont fight him, Wlad will probably fight Fury, Joshua is fighting Martin, Wilder is fighting Povetkin. He might as well take a fight instead of doing nothing and again this way he makes a nice bit of money and does improve his record. Even if it's against a can.

I would like to see him fight someone with a pulse. His last opponent was one of worst I have ever seen, it was pathetic. He doesn't have top fight a top ten fighter, just someone half decent. We differ in that I will not commend Haye for taking crap fights for decent money.

But someone like Smith is a ridiculously easy fight for someone as talented as Ward? Even Paul Smith admitted he probably wouldn't win it! And you implied Ward has had some tough comeback?

I'm not saying Haye's fighting brilliant fighters but I don't get the logic of suggesting someone as good as Ward hasn't eased his way back in and Haye has. In fairness to Haye I imagine he expected the guy he fought last to look a bit better than he did. It looked like the guy just froze completely under the pressure.

He actually fought Edwin Rodriguez after a long lay off too who Skysports have in their top ten light heavyweights, his last opponent was coming off a career best win against Murat and Paul Smith is a damn sight better than the stiffs Haye is fighting.

@EdWeatherall

That is fair enough and a nice gesture from Haye but it doesn't detract from how disappointing and at times embarrassing I have found his work as a heavyweight.

That's true but he's had 2 long lay offs in fairness. The second one was longer than the first as well. I'm not disputing who fought the better opponents but my point is I don't think it's fair to suggest Ward fought brilliant fighters especially given Ward is pretty much an elite level boxer. I'm not overly looking forward to Haye's fight but I will watch it. I just don't have a problem with him taking a couple of tune up fights before hand. Lets be fair he's putting them on free to air TV and if people want to go that's their choice. It's not like he's over selling it or lying to people. The best way is to see who he fights in 3 or 4 fights time, I reckon he'd soon step up his class of boxer.

@Oggmonster - Aye. Can certainly share those views. Can't figure out why some of the WW aren't begging to fight him - Khan and Brook in particular but also Danny Garcia, given how a crude, slower slugger like Maidana had him in all sorts of trouble. That said, I admired his late rally in that fight and the Porter contest.

@FC Ronaldo yeah I've never quite got it myself, he seemed an easy target at that weight. Porter probably won at least 8 of the first 9 rounds and looked comfortable. Brook probably the biggest surprise as it's a big enough name for him and you'd think he would win it. There was talk of Khan a few years ago but nothing ever happening. The Maidana fight ruined him, he marketed himself as the next Floyd the "about billions" stuff is a prime example but he's nowhere near that level. Not that Mayweather had much charm but he had far more about him than Broner. Maidana damaged him hugely really I think any chance he had of getting to the big time went after that fight.

Broner somewhat controversially stops Theopane after Theopane complains of a low blow and ref interpreted it as a call to end the fight. Broner was behind by 2 or 3 rounds at the time of the stoppage in the 9th according to many American sources. He was simply being outworked and allowing it to happen. Though he was coming on stronger as the fight went into the championship rounds.

PBC highlights naturally show all of Broner's wilder punching successes.

Broner called out Mayweather after the fight too. Their supposed beef has always looked like an attempt to set up a big pay day fight between them somewhere down the road in the not too distant future.

Cardle vs Dodd was a good fight as well! Fair play to Dodd. Gallagher was fuming with Cardle there can't blame him really, can't see that going Cardle's way!

If we enforce a rule whereby the fight is stopped when the contest is outside of a wide points swing then some of the greatest wins in history would be wiped out. Ali vs Foreman, Corales vs Castillo, Froch vs Taylor & Groves 1 etc.

Pride before a fall will hurt them all.
Nope. Ali was winning for the entire match. He completely outclassed Foreman and then simply KO him.

Agree with the main point though.

Rocky Fielding fast turning into a David Price-a-like under pressure,

How Fielding got that decision I'm not quite sure. Fix.

Callum Smith looked good again. Time for him to meet a non-handpicked opponent.
