The RedCafe Boxing Thread

Couple of points from the last page.

Haye will struggle to get a name in there with him unless without the PPV model - top opponents will demand a top purse.

Also, Broner's a junior welterweight, not a welterweight. I like Broner.

So were Khan and Garcia. Broner has fought at WW and failed to make weight at JW. It has been an entirely possible matchup.

Just watched the Broner Theophane, what a ridiculous decision, fecking awful refereeing.

Callum Smith looks world class, for that division.

I agree. I also agree with people saying it's handpicked opponents but he blows them all away. He's also got the advantage of it being a pretty weak division. I'd say DeGale is the best of the current champions, theyre all beatable though.

Eddie Hearn's looking rightly smug, it's all going well for him and British boxing

I dunno if it was the best night for him. Cardle arguably lost and got booed, Fielding looked awful. Even Sky (Hearn's mouth piece) basically said they're limited to domestic level. Probably not brilliant for Hearn, I doubt either of them headlines a big Sky Sports card let a lone a box office one. Equally he's had Quigg lose a world title in the last month so it's not as good as it was about 6 months ago. Joshua is a big fight for him this weekend though.

So Saturday is my first live boxing event and first trip to the o2
Anyone got tips on watching boxing there?
Mainly looking for somewhere cool we can get a beer without selling a kidney to pay for it
I'm so pumped BTW I've been singing eye of the Tiger non stop for the past month

I've never been for boxing but few of my mates have and I did some work round there a while ago so know it a bit. In all honesty no where round there is really cheap so you're going to be paying a bit. Meantime Beer Box is ok and reasonably priced. The Pilot is cheapest place prob but a bit of a shithole. They're on the station side of the arena.

To be honest most places round there that are half decent are similar priced to the arena and the undercard has some decent fighters on it so might be worth getting in for. I think Hearn has put Selby on first to get people in the arena.

BREAKING: Tyson Fury will defend his World Heavyweight title against Wladimir Klitschko on July 9th in Manchester.

Old Trafford then?

The rumour is one of the football grounds with Fury being a United fan who has dreamed of a fight at Old Trafford. I'd be surprised if it's the arena. Even with as shit as the last fight was there'd be a huge demand for it.
It's the arena according to the Daily Mail. Read it on Twitter, as well. He wanted OT but apparently it wasn't available.

Fair enough. Seems odd that, could probably get a very good attendance at a big stadium. It's a huge weekend for sports in general that so people would be all over whatever tickets they can get I'd suggest.

Wonder why they don't use Old trafford cricket ground for the boxing, surely that would be available.

From a personal point of view, I hope it's Old Trafford but financially it's up to the tickets how they play it.

Klitschko fighting in England, by force and outside of his comfort even more so, is a huge boxing event. Bigger than the first fight by a wide margin without even taking into account that Tyson won the first one.

PPV interest will always be there but ticket prices could either be seriously high in a sell out small venue or they could spread that gain across a wider audience.

The elevated pitch levels at OT might make it problematic though given the lowest seats would struggle to see past any spectators seated at pitch level too.

Definitely. Also, depending on tomorrow, it might set up an all English unification bout with two undefeated British heavyweight champions.

Just reading about Broner/Maidana there on the past page - have ye seen the size of Maidana these days?!?! He must be pushing 20 stone....pretty sad to see. And I though Nas had got fat....

For tomorrow, I'd really like Martin to pull it off. He seems a really decent bloke although I know nothing about him as a fighter besides the fact he's a southpaw. I think Pacquaio is a good bet to beat Bradley again. Timmy is a good guy and a decent fighter but Manny will be too quick and throws too many combinations for him I think. Brian Rose vs Macklin should be a fun scrap too - but I sadly I think Mack is done and should think about retirement.

Can't fecking wait for tonight. Unfortunately, I think Martin might do it. Although, if Joshua can land body shots well, this fight will be over fast.

Yeah looking forward to it. Also think Martin might win to be honest I think it's far to soon for Joshua win or lose to be honest. The level of opponent will be better than what he's faced (including Martin) after this fight. I suppose the temptation was to much for Hearn. It's a pretty weak world champion and he is beatable.

What time is the Joshua fight scheduled to start?

Does seem very early. His 15th fight? What time is the actual fight expected to start?

Cheers. Anyone actually paying for this?

Ringwalk's scheduled for 10.45pm, probably around 11

Surprised people think Martin has a shot. He's about the same level as Dillian Whyte.

Whyte caused AJ problems and Martin is a much more awkward fighter than Whyte. I guess only time will tell though. I actually think Fury makes a lot of good (albeit exagerrated) points about Joshua to be honest. People are blinded by his size and physique but that doesn't make a great boxer.

Nah I'm going out so will watch it out....I do think it's worth paying for though. It's a decent enough card and the chance to see another British heavyweight world champion.

Nah. I'm not supporting that joke of a boxing organization after what they did to Fury, and I won't respect Joshua's holding of the title until he fights Fury or Wilder.

£17 is steep. Am morbidly intrigued though. May peruse online.

I agree with Fury is general, I don't think Joshua is highly skilled, and he definitely doesn't look like a natural boxer/fighter when he's in the ring. Just an athlete. But being a great athlete will be enough to get past Martin.

Who rocked AJ for the first few rounds.
Because AJ was emotionally charged. Joshua was in control from 3rd round onwards in that fight and i think Joshua is professional enough to fight smart instead of all out for KO like he started against Whyte.

It's because he's very inexperienced. He hasn't fought anywhere near enough.

Agreed. But even in that fight alone, Joshua took a clean hit from a big guy and had enough about him to recover, take a round to gather himself and then control the fight.

As long as it doesn't take getting punched every time to get him to box clever, he'll be fine.

He still wasn't very impressive technically, even in the later rounds. Didn't use his reach advantage at all. He should've handled Whyte much easier, given both fighters' physical characteristics.

I always think about paying for the PPV, but never do. Maybe if Joshua fights Fury.
