The RedCafe Boxing Thread

Well fingers crossed then let's hope he can produce a shock result, cheers for the info.

You're welcome. And yes, everyone connected with Utd will be backing one of our own. Hope he does it. Really do.

Good night of boxing ahead tomorrow lads:

ITV - 9:45pm, live from Texas USA.
Carl Frampton vs Alejandro Gonzalez Jr - IBF Super Bantamweight title

Sky - 7pm
Scott Quigg vs Kiko Martinez - WBA Super Bantamweight title
Darleys Perez vs Anthony Crolla - WBA lightweight title
Sam Eggington vs Glenn Foot - British & Commonwealth titles
Martin Murray featuring in another tune up fight too.

Also here's a decent interview with Paul Smith. Ignore Kugan.

Good card on Sky....unfortunately I can't see Crolla doing it though, that injury he suffered was meant to be brutal (As I'm sure we could of all guessed) like youve all said I hope he does win and I'm wrong but I just can't see it.

Good interview with SMith, do like listening to him when he's on Sky.

Safe to say David Price's career is all but over after tonight as well...

Have to agree although it's certainly not the way I saw his career panning out a few years ago. Will he try to get a full time contract with sky maybe or carry on fighting mid level guys?

Yep. Could come back but it's a mess of a situation. Can't see him challenging above European level for a long time after. Got rocked with almost the first punch.

Here's the 2 rounds in full for those that missed:

It's a weird 1 with Sky. Where as they get Smith and Froch for any fight in any weight class they only really wheel out Price for heavyweight fights. I think they/Hearn got him there as potential to drum up interest for a fight with Joshua....unfortunately for him now there won't be much interest in that fight. If there is Hearn will have to do his best promotion work cos it's obvious he wouldn't last more than a few rounds with Joshua.

Yeah he could (and probably will) fight again but it just seems like he might now be there to get knocked out, hes not even good enough to be a gatekeeper, if he does carry on he had a huge rebuilding job.

Can anyone think of a more tactically clueless boxer? Looking back at the fight the size of him and he could be a beast if he knew how to box. It's awful to watch. I know he has a weak chin but he doesnt help himself at all!

Yeah just seen that. Can't believe this guy once looked for a short period like a knockout machine before the Johnson fight.

The 2 fights with Johnson have ruined him mentally I think, he's looked terrified of getting hit in his fights since....obviously with reason as is shown tonight but still it's not the attitude a top boxer has. Suppose it's easy to comment but he does look poor. It's like Tyson said though "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth"

That's the worst knockout he's suffered though. Out cold. The other 2 were excusable against an under-elite tier fighter due to naivety and then emptying the gas tank too early. This one is straight.

His right hand is probably the biggest punch in boxing today. His foot work, ability to maintain a safe range and ring generalship are just awful. And that's in the division with the highest risk too.

Consigned to a punchers chance against anything close to European level again now. That's also confirmed to Eddie Hearn and Anthony Joshua that he's not even worth the risk of fighting. It's a lose-lose situation where nothing is gained in victory and everything could be lost in 1 right hand.

Yeah i'd agree with that, it just looks like they've not given him any meaningful strategy since then to protect what is clearly a glass jaw. He tried holding tonight which failed miserably, looks a shot fighter.

Yeah he needs a new coach, he's stuck with the same 1 for years (I think?) and it's obviously not working. There's ways of avoiding being hit but he just walks straight in to it most the time, it's embarrassing. As @FC Ronaldo points out his whole boxing style is terrible, a new coach could at least show him the basics that he seemingly lacks.

Size and power wise he has the potential to dominate but nothing else is there.

Seeing as this thread has some activity tonight - watch this lads.

Rashad Evans from the UFC getting a lesson in boxing movement and reading punches, countering etc in a backstage meeting with Bernard Hopkins. It's a very insightful 8 minutes. Side note, it is from 2011.

There's so much knowledge in Hopkins it's unreal. Love listening to him explain boxing.

Yeah good video that....Hopkins does just live for the sport which is evident by the fact he's boxing at his age really!

Quigg with a great stoppage of Martinez in the 2nd after a slow start. An uppercut dropped him then he let rip with a barrage of hooks and heavy shots to drop the Spaniard again and end the contest.

Frampton down twice in the first too. First a flash, 2nd legit but not too heavy. Gonzalez jr deducted point for repeated low blows in 3rd but also hurt Frampton badly again in the round. Frampton won 2nd and 4th for me however. Good contest so far.

Frampton wins by UD. Did well after the early knockdowns and troublesome 3rd. Entertaining fight.

It was pretty emtertaining. Frampton never looked like he could knock the guy out though. Funny when he got pissed off with Gonzalez's repeated low blows and nailed him back in the balls.

Anthony Crolla fight finishes a draw. Sky call it a robbery.

These judges are useless. Ridiculous imo

I'm gutted for him. The lad deserved to win that, regardless of what he's been through. He clearly won that fight, one judge had it spot on, feck knows what the other two were thinking.

Gutted for Crolla. Be hard for him to reproduce a performance like that imo.

Still managed to show class and humility afterwards though. Deserves credit.

Not a clue how the judges can call that in any other way that a crolla win with the two points deducted! What made it worse he was doing it all fight and was only picked up on later on. Deserved more!!!!!!

He should retire IMO. There is no punch resistance there. He shouldn't put his health on the line.

Frampton must have taken half a dozen big shots in the Travellers before he deliberately gave one back. Reckon Gonzalez went in with that strategy, if he went behind he'd start using the low blow.

Yeah, at 32 and with a respectable professional career behind him I'd agree. I can't see either the confidence or the technique or the punch resistance getting any better. Short of the late great Manny Steward coming back from the grave and teaching him the jab, jab, grab technique properly I really don't see where he can go from here.

Mind you knowing what I know about fighters he'll still be being told or actually believe that he can still mix it at top European or even world level and the last 5 or so fights were just a blip. I'd hope his people turn out to be a bit more honest than the normal fighters entourage.

feck, I forgot all of these fights were on. Can't believe I missed the Frampton fight.

Thanks for the link (only seeing it now) -- I managed to watch them on a different site last night.

Berto vs Mayweather confirmed
Is it free? I'll still watch, but for his last fight* it's completely underwhelming. Might mean Khan actually fights Brook though.

*Assuming it is his last fight, not sure it is.

No worries.

Mayweather is rumoured to be on CBS in America but it's not been confirmed...I'd imagine it will be free in most places around the world if they're not charging in America. Although with the exception of Pacquiao haven't his last few fights been on Box Nation? I wouldn't be paying if that's the case.

It's an uninspiring choice for a last fight to be honest but I didn't really expect much different as it's been basically confirmed since after the Pac fight. I still think he'll go for 50-0, this is an easy fight to secure a 49-0, put it on free TV in the US. Millions will tune in as it's a free Floyd Mayweather fight, he'll win convincingly and then he'll suddenly have a change of heart about 10 minutes after the fight and say he wants to go for 50-0 and they'll make a fortune off it on PPV being his last fight. I don't know who it would be against though, he can beat everyone in the division fairly easily so he has his pick really. I don't think he's actually overly bothered about the "0" in his record when it's his last fight, he'll get the same pay day regardless.

Potential to see Wlad become the next undisputed heavyweight champion? It's looking likely...

Wladimir Klitschko is preparing to face Tyson Fury and his manager has revealed he has at least five more fights in him.

The world's number one heavyweight defends his three major world titles against Britain's Fury in October, less than a month away from turning 40.

It will be Klitschko's 68th professional fight and his 28th world title showdown but manager Bernd Boente has made it clear there is no chance of him calling it a day.

"We will announce the extension of our RTL contract, our German TV partners, for another five more fights," he told Sky Sports News HQ.

Klitschko will go head-to-head with Fury for the first time at the official announcement at ESPRIT Arena in Düsseldorf on Tuesday July 21.

And Boente promised that even a man as known for his press conference antics as Fury is not going to unsettle the WBO, IBF and WBA heavyweight champion.

"Fury has always said Wladimir will avoid me, but you'll see what happens," said Boente.

"Wladimir takes it easy. He has so many different types of opponents and they've all talked the fight up and some were calmer.

"But don't forget four years ago he had David Haye, who talked a huge fight, so lets see what Tyson brings to the table."

I'd be surprised if he doesn't fight Wilder after Fury (assuming he beats Fury which I reckon he will) it seems likely he'd try and unify the titles....with 5 fights there's potential for a Joshua fight to finish on as well!

Wlad will walk through Tyson Fury - free money if you're a betting man. He's already the lineal champion and frankly you would have to be a fool to dispute that he's the best heavyweight in the game. I very much doubt Wilder will face Wlad, I don't even expect him to face Povetkin - they'll keep the hype train going for as long as possible.

I agree he won't fight Povetkin and he'll be milked for all he's worth Wilder but if (when) Wlad beats Fury then there's little other places to go. It's an easy fight for Wlad so he'll call him out I'd guess for the chance to unify the division. It's probably the only heavyweight fight that would get America excited as well and is therefore a huge opportunity for Wilder in terms of pay day and for recognition. He wouldn't win but even if he lost it wouldn't be the end of the world. Wlad is pound for pound one of the top 3 fighters in the world and expected to win every fight. There's no real point Wilder ducking him for me, the hype soon gets boring when he's fighting nobodies, fighting legitimate heavyweights, especially the best, gives him a big pay day if nothing else.

LOL. Perfect capture.

Read somewhere Ward-GGG are looking to fight each other. Would love to see that happen.
