The RedCafe Boxing Thread

firstly, woof! what a fight. absolutely brilliant, massive respect to both fighters, best british fight i've seen in a long long time. lovely stuff

secondly, ridiculous decision, disgusting actually. from every POV it was wrong, for groves who fought the fight of his life and was well ahead imo and hadn't up to that point been down either, to froch who despite being put down and taking some huge shots in practically every round was still in there and was in the assendancy too, for the fight fans who were watching an epic unfold before them only to have it cut short and for boxing which once again is under a cloud amisdst accusations of fixing and such. i'm all for protecting fighters if there's a danger but just like froch bounced up after the first groves may well have recovered if given a 8-count and who knows what happens then

fwiw i felt Froch had just started to turn the tide and would've either finished it or took the decision (given the score cards). Groves accuracy on the night was unbelievable, shot after shot found the target and the knock down was an absolute beaut but i thought in the last couple of rounds he just started to lose his composure a bit and was making mistakes, Froch had found his range and the shots that finished it were brutal, he'd have knocked him down if allowed and maybe groves wouldn't have got up in time? we'll never know, and to quote david brent, thats the tragedy

Its such a shame really. Obviously a lot people feel Froch would finished the stronger which is his usual style but equally the hiding he got in the first few rounds may have stopping him finishing so strongly.

I do think Groves got careless in the 8th and 9th. Obviously Froch had a lot to do with that but I think his inexperienced showed at that point of the fight.

Anyone think Froch will avoid the rematch ? ( i know he hinted about a rematch straight after the fight)

depends if he retires, and that probably depends just how much groves genuinely hurt him. not sure theres many better fights out there for him and he'll be able to call all the shots re the contract terms (it'd definately be in nottingham for a start) he's a proud man and you could see he was annoyed at practically everyone claiming it was an undeserved result. hopefully one last hurrah in front of his home fans will prove be too tempting to turn down.

i really hope they sort it out, i'm still buzzing off the spectacle, part of me hopes for another controversy where they end up going a third time too!

Great I'll give that a watch. That trilogy was just incredible to watch, the first fight in particular was out of this world good.

Froch has come out with some absolute bullshit this week. Really bad PR.

Scouser Tony Bellew stopped by Adonis Stevenson in Canada, quite a good fight. Froch camp should take note, that's how the ref should step in, when the man is wobbling around in the corner/ropes and not defending. That was AFTER being knocked down as well just before.

Did you see Kovalev? That guy's power is astonishing, better than Adonis in my opinion.

Great documentary on the Ward V Gatti fights. Unreal stuff at times.

Watched this the other day, really interesting documentary and one that pulls on your heartstrings. That first fight that they had was brutal, both of them really go blow for blow. Never heard of Ward until watching The Fighter, as one guy said in this - you could make a movie out of him and they sure did. Quality link, cheers.

Just watching this docu and I witnessed the 9th round, talk about brutal. As far as I'm concerned, that is what boxing should be like, no trashtalk or anything like that. Just good old honest boxing. I don't think I will never watch a fight like that ever again. We can watch the likes of Mayweather or Pacquiao, but I don't think they could produce as much excitement as Ward and Gatti did, judging by the fights of course.

Did you watch the first fight live or just seeing part of the action from that documentary? The first fight looked to be the best of the three for me going from the doc. First and the third got Ringmaster fight of the year.

I'll be honest, I watched the documentary, but nevertheless, it is not often we see fighters just wanting to nearly kill each other and have massive respect for each other at the end. I read that round 9 was the round of the century, which I hope means since 1902, and not since the year 2000.

It seemed so natural too and in the end proved to be natural as they became good friends. Not sure if you have finished the documentary by now but at one point it kind of hit me. I got consumed with the story/history and it all became rather sad. Still, the actual boxing was great to watch, even if it was only highlights. At some point I need to watch the whole fights.

My favourite boxer of all time is Frank Bruno just because he didn't care if he got knocked out, well he did but he would not be fearful of that as he tried to knock the other guy out. Too many fighters are counter-punchers these days. The best fights are those that don't necessarily worry about defence but go on the attack. That is why the Froch/Groves fight was so good because they both tried to work the openings and stand toe to toe.

Do you think it is possible that Froch and Groves could be a good trilogy, since they both know how each other fight, they know their strengths and weaknesses, and of course, their power.

I'm not so sure, what do you think? I'd like to see a rematch but not sure about three on the spin. Never been a fan of Froch myself, his technique is non-existent and although you could possibly say the same about Ward (considering we have been talking about him) he doesn't have the same bottle as he did. If they do fight again I'd like Groves to smash him, which could lead to a third bout. Speculation is that Froch might retire though?

Rumours that Khan/Mayweather is going to happen

He has struggled with injuries for a long time. Sad because I always find him a likeable bloke

Rigondeaux boxing later tonight, and its on Sky for anyone interested

Maidana vs Broner tonight, should be electric!

I think Broner is really going to want to impress after that lacklustre performance against Paulie and Maidana is always entertaining

 Broner at the end

Good first round that for Maidana

Are you watching a showtime link btw Pat? Mines boxnation and much prefer showtime

Cheers Pat

Agreed, and that one as well :nervous:

Hopefully Maidana can get back on top, can't stand Broner
