Mayweather/Marquez Back On

LOS ANGELES - Sports fans around the world can breathe again as it was announced today that the highly anticipated 12-round welterweight showdown between

Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez has been officially rescheduled for September 19, after Mayweather, who suffered a rib injury while training for the originally scheduled July 18 date, received clearance from his doctor to participate on the new date.

Mayweather vs. Marquez: "Number One/Numero Uno," which will still take place at MGM Grand in Las Vegas and be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View, will now take place on what on what is historically considered boxing's biggest weekend, and falling on the time-honored tradition of Mexican Independence Day.

"I am relieved to be cleared to fight as I was already looking forward to getting back in the ring," said Mayweather. "Trust me, September 19 is a great weekend for boxing, and all of my fans, of which there are many Mexicans too, can certainly hold on to their hats and sombreros when I get back in to the ring and show them what they have been missing these past 18 months. I will destroy Marquez and reclaim my rightful place as boxing's pound-for-pound king all in one night. Don't miss it."

Marquez, who has also agreed to fight on the new date, is excited about appearing yet again on the time-honored tradition of El Grito de Independence.

"I am happy that Mayweather has been cleared to fight and we can get down to business on September 19," said Marquez. "This weekend is not just an important weekend for boxing, but even more so for all of the Mexican and Mexican-American people I will be fighting for who will have a great reason to celebrate my win over Mayweather, which will be for all of the people and for the entire country of Mexico that night. I am sure of victory and si se puede- yes we can and yes we will!"

I don't think I've ever seen Vitali fight. If he's anything like his brother, and from seeing Valuev, that would be the most boring fight of all time.

Nah Vitali comes to fight has more heart was doing a number on Lennox before the fight got stopped as half his face was falling off

Yeah Vitali is ace. I always thought Lennox tried to cut him open badly because he was getting pounded.

I'd love to see him fight again.

Then he goes and loses!
People are getting onto him because he quit and Steve Forbes (meant to be Hatton's next opponent) is leading the internet brigade calling him a hype job etc

King Arthur wins again. KO in the tenth. I'd like to see him move up to super-middleweight now.

With regard to Vitali, he quit against Chris Byrd and had three vaginas opened in his face by a fat ancient Lewis. His biggest win is, what, Gomez? Peter? His resume is horrendous.

No one was talking about his resume
He was clearly beating Lennox regardless of the cuts
He was up by a round. He also required over 70 stitches to close the cuts on his face, which were caused by Lewis punching him repeatedly. He lost the fight.

Your argument is like saying "he was winning the fight until he got knocked out."

The face of someone who got his ass kicked.

wow are you being serious?
I could do that for people that had won fights as well. If you think Klits wasnt winning that fight (he was ahead on the cards as well) then your dillusional

I didn't say he wasn't winning the fight. What I did say is that he was up by a round on the judge's scorecard. Hardly a whitewash. And completely irrelevant because Vitali was TKO'd. He lost the fight. I don't understand why you keep stating that Vitali was winning. It doesn't matter. Botha was winning against Tyson. He was still knocked out.

But Vitali wasnt in truble he was doing well rocked Lewis had him holding on for dear life lol
Vit wasn't going to get kayoed despite what Lewis was saying in the post fight interview lol
(I watched this again about 3 days ago Vit was comfortable even with the cut)

Comfortable?

I guess I imagined the massive uppercut that had Vitali hanging on for dear life. If he hadn't fallen into Lewis he would've been on the floor.

I suggest you watch it again. You obviously weren't paying attention.

I meant comfortable with the cut not comfortable with the fight and if thats your logic the same can be said for Lennox who basically had Klitschko in a bear hug

so because he was cut it means Lennox was in control?
people can get cut and lose it ala Diaz but Klit was coping with it and like i said still looked comfortable
You said some people are susceptible to cuts. The fact that Vitali has been cut once in his career, against Lewis, would suggest he isn't.

Vitali could've been 6 nil up. It doesn't matter. He lost the fight. Why don't you understand that?

who said i dont understand that? I know he lost! it happened quite a while ago i dont live under a rock. im stating that Lewis was very lucky Klit got the .
True Vit hadn't been cut but lets be honest Lewis was the best he had faced, he was expected to win comfortably but when the fight stopped he was 2 points ahead on every card 58-56

I agree, Lewis was the best he had faced. A 38 year old, out of shape Lewis who had been preparing to face Kirk Johnson. He took the fight on 2 weeks notice.

And Vitali still lost. Luck had nothing to do with it. He punched Vitali often enough to open those cuts. The doctor deemed Vitali not fit to continue. End of story.

Vitali was also ahead on the cards against Byrd when he quit. As I said, Botha was ahead against Tyson. Moorer was ahead against Foreman. They all lost, making the scorecards irrelevant.

If you agree that Vitali lost the fight, and I have already stated that Vitali was ahead on the cards when he was TKO'd, I am not sure what we are arguing about.

Gatti's Wife Charged With Premeditated Murder

Brazilian authorities have charged the wife of former boxing champion Arturo Gatti with first-degree murder on Sunday following his death at a posh seaside tourist resort in Brazil.

Police said 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues was taken into custody after contradictions in her interrogation. The Canadian boxer's body was found early Saturday in a hotel room at the Porto de Galinhas resort in northeastern Brazil.

A later report by CBC News said police had formally charged Rodrigues.

The former junior welterweight champion from Montreal was apparently strangled with the strap of a purse, which was found at the scene with blood stains, said Milena Saraiva, a spokeswoman for the Pernambuco state civil police. She told The Associated Press that Gatti also sustained a head injury.

While the investigation was not complete, Saraiva said authorities were preparing to present a formal accusation against Rodrigues, who denied being involved in her husband's death.

Police said Rodrigues, a Brazilian, could not explain how she spent nearly 10 hours in the room without noticing that Gatti was already dead.

Police were investigating witness reports that the couple fought and Gatti was drunk when he returned to his room Friday night, Saraiva said, adding that police were told the couple were extremely jealous of each other and that he constantly complained of her clothing when she travelled to Brazil.

Acelino (Popo) Freitas, a four-time world champion Brazilian boxer, told Globo TV's website on Saturday that he was a close friend of Gatti and his wife and that he "knew they were having some sort of problem and were about to separate."

The couple's one-year-old son, who was unhurt, was handed to Rodrigues's sister, Saraiva said.

The 37-year-old Gatti, whose epic trilogy with Micky Ward branded him one of the most exciting fighters of his generation, retired in 2007 with a career record of 40-9 and 31 knockouts.

Known for his straightforward punching and granite-like chin, Gatti captured the junior welterweight title in 1995, when he defeated Tracy Harris Patterson in Atlantic City, N.J.

Apparently he had been abusing her.

The relationship between Amanda Rodrigues Gatti and her now dead husband, Arturo, was known to be volatile. In March of this year Gatti was charged with assaulting Amanda Rodriguez but he failed to appear in court to answer the charges. When he did appear, in April, he was released on bail and ordered to be at least 200 meters away from Rodriguez at all times.

While i definitely condemn hitting a woman, she should have ran away and called the cops then take his ass to court if he did hit her. This is all very fecked up. R.I.P. Gatti, watching his fight against Mayweather and Ward which are some of my alltime favorites will never be the same again.

They announced plans for this tournament a few weeks ago. It still pisses me off that Ward and Dirrell are included, but no Bute?
