The ongoing legal saga between Joe Calzaghe and former promoter Frank Warren may be over, for now. Calzaghe has been awarded around £1.8million, winning his lawsuit against Warren and his company Sports Network. Judges refused Warren’s request to appeal the High Court ruling.

Calzaghe has claimed the money was owed from last April’s decision win over Bernard Hopkins. Warren denied the claim and said it was Calzaghe who owed him £1million for breaking a verbal promotional contract. Justice Wyn Williams dismissed Warren's claim in March and ordered the promoter to pay Calzaghe his money.

Since that ruling, Warren’s company Sports Network would go into administration.

Final Birthday Fight For Hopkins

According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, 44-year-old Bernard Hopkins might return in January for one final “birthday fight.” Hopkins told Schaefer that he was interested in one final fight in January, when the fighter turns 45. Hopkins has been inactive since last October’s win over Kelly Pavlik.

The two possible opponents on the list are WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch and IBF cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek. Schaefer told the Los Angeles Times that he already spoke with HBO and they were interested in the proposed idea. Hopkins tried to make a fight with Adamek for July but the two sides couldn’t agree on the money. When both sides tried to resurrect the fight, HBO, facing a budget crunch, advised them that July was out and a 2010 date was more likely.

"Some people have a nice birthday party when they turn 45 and dance," Schaefer told The Times. "Bernard wants to dance in the ring. It'd be a great fight either way: him taking on another new champion [Froch], who just beat Jermain Taylor [who beat Hopkins twice], or this move up toward 200 pounds to take on Adamek.”

Cotto/Pac negotiations in full flow

Promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank hopes to have signed contracts from Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto by the end of the week. Arum is trying to match his two fighters for November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Even before Cotto won a decision over Joshua Clottey last Saturday, Arum met with Cotto to discuss a Pacquiao encounter.

"When Miguel was training in Tampa, I met with Miguel Cotto, his father and [attorney] Gabriel Peñagarícano to discuss the possibility of a fight with Pacquiao. They asked me for a written proposal to be sent and they made some notations that we plan to discuss [this week]," Arum said to Primera Hora.

Pacquiao gave Arum the order to get the Cotto fight made. The two discussed the fight in New York during Pacquiao's recent trip to the East Coast. Pacquiao attended the Boxing Writers Awards Dinner last Friday and sat ringside the following night for Cotto's win over Clottey in Madison Square Garden. Arum sat down with Pacquiao at his hotel to discuss a Cotto encounter.

"[Manny] gave me the green light to try to reach an agreement with Miguel. So it's ideal that by the end of this week we could make all of the details. Both boxers are part of Top Rank and my interest is making money, "Arum said.

As far as Emanuel Steward coming on board in Cotto's corner, Arum was contatced by Steward but told the hall-of-fame trainer to contact Cotto directly.

"I told him to talk to Cotto, Miguel's father, and Peñagarícano on the matter. I do not want to intervene in this matter, since it's a decision for Cotto to make, " Arum said.

MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMP KELLY PAVLIK IN ALCOHOL REHAB
17 June, 2009 by Pedro Fernandez

CHAMPION PAVLIK’S PROBLEMS CONTINUE

Youngstown, OH- World middleweight (160 lbs) champion Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 31 KOs) has checked into an Alcohol Rehabilitation Center. Having just signed a new contract with promoter Bob Arum, Kelly, who has lost only one fight to Bernard Hopkins is no stranger to alcohol abuse and its related problems.

KELLY SUFFERS FROM SEVERE THIRST PROBLEM

Before he won the title from Jermain Taylor, Pavlik reportedly got into a scuffle with a policeman which is said to have brought about probabtion. Soon after besting Taylor, Pavlik put his fist through a window in his home, requiring over 50 stitches to repair. All in all, the 27-year olds psyche was destroyed by Hopkins, who upset long odds by shutting Kelly down late in October 2008.

I think the Pavlik camp have come out and denied those rumours.

Anyone see Pascal/Diaconu last night?

Nice pics, by the way. Looks like you had good seats.

sky sports 2 at 10 sadly it will be a snoozathon
I am hoping it doesn't resemble the Sultan fight. I can't stand Wlad, I hate the way he "fights." Pawing out his jab, refusing to throw the right hand until the sixth round, just terrified of getting hit.

Chagaev is a very good boxer, and he can bang. He has already shown he can deal with a large height difference in the Valuev fight.

I am praying he gets inside and starches Wlad early. A mid to late round KO by Wlad is the likely outcome, however.

Go Chagaev!

Might as well watch it but can't say I'm that excited.

fecking well annoying that Haye pulled out the fight... most hype surrounding a heavyweight fight there's been in years.

The heavyweight division is a joke.

Well, it wasn't as bad as the Sultan fight. Bit disappointed with Chagaev, though. He was just too small, IMO.

What's the latest on Hatton by the way? Last time I saw him he was sitting by the pool in Vegas considering whether he would continue or not.

What's the latest on Hatton by the way? Last time I saw him he was sitting by the pool in Vegas considering whether he would continue or not.
He has hinted that he may continue. Personally, I hope he doesn't.

The rumors of a Ricky Hatton comeback are continuing to build in the UK. After May's two-round knockout loss at the hands of Manny Pacquiao, Hatton was quiet for a few weeks but now he's dropping hints about a possible return to the ring. A source close to the Hatton camp spoke with the Sunday Mercury and advised the paper that a Hatton comeback is under serious consideration.

“It’s by no means certain but there are strong feelings about having at least another fight. Ricky certainly doesn’t want to go out on a defeat and he would like to end on a very high note with a big thank you to his fans with a stunning victory," the source said.

While no opponent has been named, there are rumors that Hatton is considering a junior welterweight fight with fellow Brit Amir Khan. The two fighters are good friends and both refused to fight each other in the past. But Khan recently said that he would accept a fight with Hatton if the fans demanded it. Khan moves up to 140-pounds on July 18 to challenge WBA champion Andreas Kotelnik.

“Who it would be against I don’t know. But there have been whispers about Amir Khan which would be a mouth watering match. It would have all the hype and razzamatazz – and money.”

Hatton Khan would be fun!

I just want Hatton to retire to be honest. I'm a big fan of his, but after getting wobbled by Lazcano the writing was on the wall - his chin and reflexes have gone now, and Khan and even Junior fecking Witter suddenly look like dangerous fights for him now. Really don't want to see either of those two beat Ricky, especially Witter.

Witter would have been a decent fight even before the losses but Khan could have his card. Roach engineers game plans and his fighters execute them. He has done it before and Khan has the tools to beat Ricky, height, handspeed, footwork and decent power.

He will try and keep him at bat with the jab.

Its going to be a fascinating fight.

he will try but Haye wont sit there and allow him. Haye will move and try roll under the jabs to get inside. Haye knows he has no chance outside fighting, obvious he is no Tyson working into the inside but he is pretty decent at sitting on an opponent's chest and thus letting loose 'The Hayemaker'

feck me I hate the Klitscho brothers. The most boring fighters in the world. I hope Haye gets him at some stage and fecking batters him. Also, they're a bit fecking weird aren't they? Who can forget this :nervous:

According to Russian News Agency, RIA Novosti, a deal has been reached for a unification bout between WBC champion Vitali Klitschko and WBA champion Nikolai Valuev. Valuev told RIA Novosti that he reached a deal with Klitschko and the two are looking to fight in the fall. From what I gather, the deal was reached between the two fighters. The promoters have to go over the particulars of the deal and the sanctioning bodies have to approve the fight.

"I have reached agreement with Klitschko and we really want to meet, we have been talking about the end of September or October," Valuev said.

Valuev, at seven-feet and 300-plus pounds, would be the first opponent who is bigger than Vitali, standing around 6'7-6'8. The WBC champ is happy with fighting Valuev.

"I was delighted when Nikolai called to say he wanted the fight," Vitali said.

I actually want to see this. Valueless sucks, but it will be interesting to see how Vitali does against a significantly bigger man.

I don't think I've ever seen Vitali fight. If he's anything like his brother, and from seeing Valuev, that would be the most boring fight of all time.

SETANTA has teetered on the brink of going bust this week - and it would be a major blow to sport and boxing if it went under.

By last night, it was unclear whether or not the broadcaster would be saved.

Whatever the situation, it's tough for the sport at the moment, with ITV pulling out of boxing later this year.

A major fight that Setanta was supposed to be broadcasting was David Haye's IBF world heavyweight title challenge against Wladimir Klitschko in Germany on June 20.

Last week, it was announced that Haye had a bad back and couldn't fight.

Naturally there has been speculation about whether Setanta's financial problems were really behind it.

Someone described it as the murky world of boxing, but it's not a problem with the sport, but rather Setanta's predicament.

When Haye struck his deal with the Klitschko brothers to get the fight on, it was agreed that his purse would come from Setanta - and nowhere else.

It has been rumoured that Haye asked for his sevenfigure payment to be made before he stepped in the ring, but Setanta refused.

Interestingly, Haye's sparring partner David Price was quoted as saying: "I'll be honest, I came home on Monday, but the last time I saw David he was in great shape, he was fine, and he was raring to go.

"I don't think anyone was more shocked than me to hear that the fight was off."

Back injuries can flare up at any time and Haye says he has medical evidence to prove his case.

Yet if money was his motive for pulling out of the fight, then maybe he should have taken a risk and faced Klitschko anyway.

I'm sure a fresh television deal could have been thrashed out at short notice if Setanta had gone to the wall.

Sometimes in boxing you have to roll the dice and if you really fancy your chances then you take a fight, come what may.

That's even more the case when you are a promoter - which Haye now claims to be.

Had Haye beaten Wladimir, a fight against his older brother Vitali would have been worth huge money.

With Wladimir fighting Ruslan Chagaev next weekend, a fight against Vitali now seems to be Haye's only option. He certainly won't want to risk his chin in a 10-rounder.

That's bad news for Haye because beating Vitali is a much taller order than facing Wladimir - and is likely to turn into a painful loss.

DeGale To Spar With Mayweather

One of the more highly regarded prospects in British boxing, middleweight James DeGale, is going to train and spar with five-division champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the end of July. DeGale, a 2008 Olympic gold winner, faces Ciaran Healey at Manchester's MEN Arena on July 18. DeGale and his trainer Jim McDonnell met Mayweather in London during last month's media tour for Mayweather-Marquez.

"We have an option to train with Mayweather in Vegas," said DeGale to the BBC. "To be in the gym with Floyd will be unbelievable. Floyd is one of my favourite fighters ever. He's a boxer who can dig deep when he needs to. Mayweather is a proper showman - I love his attitude. He has all the skills. If I'm half the fighter he is, I'll be cool."

McDonnell told the BBC that sparring with Mayweather and other American fighters will enchance DeGale.

"We're going to use the summer vacation as part of James' learning curve. All we've go to do with Mayweather is finalize the details," McDonnell said. "We also have an option to train with Ronald 'Winky' Wright in Miami and Jermain Taylor at Gleason's Gym in New York. We want James to train and spar with world champions."
