I'm going to bed. Should I just leave my pick with Boris? Don't think he left his pick with anyone.

again United players getting grossly under-rated.

This are the career stats of Zabaleta. Just see the number of yellow and red cards he has and argue that he isn't rash and a liability in defence whereas some with better numbers on average has the perception of being rash and a liability by the casual observer as well as the strange hate-all-united-players-but-for-the obvious-big-wage-earners-brigade we have on here.

As a pure DM? I dont think so, he never had the discipline to play a holding role.
More like Essien role. Although Essien is more aggressive, and Song is a better passer.

Edit: Isn't he more of a DM with WestHam?

He's the deepest midfielder for West Ham, but he plays more like a ball winner than a defensive screen.

Havent only seen him once or twice at west ham so no idea how he plays for them, was remembering his time at arsenal where he was best as a box to box.

Didn't know those were two different things.

I didn't make myself clear enough, but Song would get at a player and win the ball without caring about the gap he is leaving. Sure, other holding midfielders also do that, but he is quite naive in his defensive approach when compared to other defensive midfielders.

Thanks. I only watch him few times this season, and seems like he's being at least one of their DM.

Given that West Ham play some more less defensively capable midfielders in the other midfield positions, I am not surprised that he's the most like a holding midfielder in their team. Still, though, I wouldn't say that this makes him a good holding midfielder, defensively.

Are you guys really judging Song for his Westham days?
He was immense for Arsenal defensively before moving to Barcelona when they played a midfield trio of:
Song -- Wilshere
Fabregas
Song was the most defensive midfielder there and he was incredible. Surely Pogba & Yaya offer more defensive help than Wilshere and Cesc do.
He's not exactly the water carrier as his team mates can definitely do a defensive job but before moving to Barca he was one of the best DMs in the world. For me he was just as good as Matic is today if not better.

I dont think that statement is true, from what I remember he only really performed in his last season(highest assister and player of the year I think) and fabregas had left by then. defensive partner next to him which allowed him to play a box to box role.

Arteta and song were the preferred partnership that season, with arteta being more defensive with his superior positioning. That allowed song to play more as a box to box midfielder.

The west ham talk was bought up as we werent sure if he had gotten better from a defensive pov now or not.
