The Modern / Current Players Draft

Thoughts on mine cutch?

I think you might be looking good too. Have no idea on the pool sizes but usually the fullbacks and wingers can be a struggle to fill and you've made a decent job of it if you can sort out the rest of your spine now. Hopefully the likes of Maicon gets the credit he deserves, his peak form from around 07-10 was as good as anyone at that time.

Underrated in every draft that guy. His peak was exceptional, but the fall has blurred the opinion on him.

I'm not Cutch, but I think you and Boris both have about half of a devastating counter attacking side and should be focused in that direction, meaning you can sacrifice pace at CB with your eventual picks and Boris can sacrifice ball retentive abilities when he goes for the rest of his midfield.

He should be shot by ISIS.

Guys am I right in presuming that Pat would not be able to field a team which contains Xavi, Villa as well as Barzagli, Verratti or is the nationality rule just there to ensure three players don't come from the same country?

I came dangerously close to shitting myself reading this mate :D.

I don't know why but he never massively stood out to me even at his peak. It must simply have been the matches I watched, but he always seemed like a very competent player rather than a great one to me.

Only argument against Maicon at his peak is that Mourinho gets the best out of a lot of players who might drop a level elsewhere, but that's true of like 10 guys in the draft so far and another 10 that will get picked.

He wasn't necessarily someone who stood out to me either, similar to Zabaleta but slightly better in my eyes at least. As all-round as you can be, with his stamina and off the ball runs being the only real stand out qualities.

I would strongly disagree with that. Him being destroyed by Bale (who I have!) completely changed perceptions of him. The guy was a TANK in his prime. He could hold the entire right flank on his own by defending and attacking. He gets underrated everytime, but I don't see a better right back (if Lahm plays on the left) than him in this draft, unless I'm missing somebody obvious.

Wasn't rating him poorly, was trying to do the opposite actually:lol:. His all-roundness was his strength, but he's hard to explain in words. He didn't have blistering pace, inch accurate crosses or through balls. He wasn't the best header in the world, not the strongest etc etc.

But he was pretty much as good in everything and was overall a very effective full back who must be defined with his off the ball runs and stamina.

Here's a Zabaleta in his peak against Hazard

Dani Alves without doubt.

Mate I was scared myself.. strategy in ruins

This nationality rule is threatening my sanity already after shooting my wad on Spanish players so early. Thank feck it isn't any more harsh!

Aye, a signifcantly better Zabaleta is an apt comparison in terms of how I viewed him. Very, very good rather than spectacular basically, which is no insult to a full back really.

That gif suggests Hazard was dominant that game and Zabaleta was poor, which is the exact opposite. Hazard was below par in that match and Zabaleta gave a solid performance.

He was utter shite for City but the one thing he did have was an ability to play some ridiculously good through balls for a full-back and deliver some great crosses. Guess he wasn't like that for Inter or did it just stand out more because he was a mess defensively?

No offence intended mate - this is one of those situations where I suspect my judgement is flawed due to not watching him week in and week out and not seeing his best performances. Was just offering my subjective, personal perspective rather than an objective one if that makes sense.

Dani Alves without doubt.

Alves really was a spectacular player at his peak. You've reminded me that I must look up a post I made about him in a previous draft to show that I'm not just bigging up my own player. His productivity in attack was pretty much unparalleled as a full back, although of course he benefitted from the freedom he was allowed compare to other right backs.

His crossing and through balls were at that level for Inter too, but the rest of his game were pretty much the same without being spectacular.

Cannot just discount Lahm. Lahm is the clear standout IMO, a level above any other right back in the draft.

Lahm is/was completely brilliant as a right back in fairness. Alves is better in terms of attacking output, but Lahm is special in terms of needing zero cover defensively whilst still playing a huge part in his team's attacking and ball retention game. He's right up there with that great Thuram/Zanetti/Cafu generation of right backs in terms of quality and consistency.

Yeah, agreed.

Anyone going to be around that I can send my pick to?

Same question. Thanks.

I'll be around for at least another few hours but I reckon we're reaching a stage where we might all be in for the same players. Probably best if there's a neutral around?

I'm far enough away that it won't matter.
