The MMA thread

Its been all Falcao, but Harris is still just about in this. Will be very satisfying if Harris can pull this one out of the bag after he didnt let go of the choke at the bell.

Feeble last round from both fighters

Harris letting my picks down :(

Really hope Penn pulls this off but Hughes has looked great recently. Still going for Penn though

BJ needs this, I mean where would he go from here if he loses? But I just think Hughes has improved in all the right areas to be covered against BJ.

What just happened. They touched gloves, my stream froze for what seemed to be 5 seconds, and the next thing I see is the fight is over. ?????

That was about it... Oh BJ had one combo I think, then the next action Hughes threw and BJ caught him with a counter right. Hughes went down and BJ swarmed on him and Hughes was out and saved.

Rampage coming out to the old Pride music :D Quality

I have Page two rounds up here. Not that eventful but Machida isn't doing much

Rampage is very predictable though. Machida keeps staying out of range but closing the distance when Jackson gets too close. Rampage just isn't intelligent enough to counter it

Rampage by split decision!!

Machida was way too tentative the first two rounds. Great last round but too little too late

While Machida easily won the last round, Rampage just about had the better of the first two imo. So he should get a narrow win... But the judges say

I'm precisely the opposite. Want Hughes to win badly, but not sure he can present the same problems to Penn that Edgar did. Penn can fight his usual counter-attacking style again as Hughes won't present a fraction of the movement that Edgar did, he'll have his usual speed advantage restored too.

Christ. I wasn't expecting it to be that emphatic. Hughes should be looking to call it a day now. Maybe one more fight to go out on a win.

I wasn't expecting them to give Rampage the decision but I scored it 29-28 for him too. Machida paid the price for being too passive until the final round against a fighter who is difficult to finish.

Good event overall.

Why would Hughes quit? he came into this fight in a much better position than Penn.

He's looked well past his best even in most of his wins imo. The Gracie fight was dire. I just dont see any way he can get back into title contention at this point, and he's suffered some heavy knockouts when he's stepped up in class over the past several years.

I never really beleived that he was in a better position than a younger BJ who was only a couple of fights against his stylistic nightmare removed from being a dominant beltholder.

This is why the ten point must system MUST go.

Round 1 was a toss up. If you put a gun to my head and say pick a winner I'd lean Machida.

Round 2 was a toss up. If you put a gun...I'd pick Rampage.

Round 3 was all Machida.

If you drop the ten point must system, you can call 1 and 2 even rounds, which they were imo. The fight is then 2 rounds even 1 for Machida.

Fight was a draw or a Machida win, not a 'Page win.

That said, Machida was underwhelming in rounds 1 and 2. He was too tentative and too reactionary. Rampage was pretty intelligent for once in his career and in a brilliant tactical maneuver decided that he would do next to nothing himself. Machida, not one to press the action himself can't counter if the other guy isn't throwing :)

Machida won that fight overall in my opinion, but I definitely would have scored it 29-28 to Rampage. I agree with Nucks, there should be a better way of scoring.

MUST isnt great, but Machida knew how the fight is scored before he fought. Its his hesitant approach that has cost him. Just a couple more flurries like in the last round and he would have won, but instead he thought he could leave it till the last round and finish him. There's nothing wrong with his style but his attitude could be a lot better.

Exactly. EFFECTIVE agression is what I think was being given to Rampage, but he wasn't being effective.

Penn is lined up to fight Fitch @ UFC 127 now, with the Fitch fight @ UFC126 against Ellenberger cancelled. Suppose this is the test to see if BJ has a long term future in the WW division, and the quickest way to set up another fight with GSP. Should hopefully bring out the best of BJ. He has the tools to beat Fitch but he needs to be in tip top shape and go in with a big gastank

Is there a need to see BJ fight GSP again? BJ should stay at 155. Wait for Maynard to beat Edgar and then take a big poop on Maynard. Then Frankie can take the belt off BJ and we can play musical chairs ;p

They'd rather see another BJ vs GSP than another Fitch vs GSP (Or Shields vs GSP, perhaps). I suppose Penn is being sent out and try and put an end to Fitch's dominance of the division outside of GSP and take him out of the title picture for a while.

Harsh on Fitch imo, although I could see him beating Penn pretty soundly. I'm not a fan of Fitch's style at all but I think he's earnt another shot, the UFC are just going to delay it as much as they can though and pray someone beats him.

Anyone still watching TUF?

Regardless of the outcome I think both Brookins and Johnson have a future in the UFC which makes a change from last seasons wasters.

Also, I'm sure there was a shot of someone getting chinned in the garden in the clips compilation after the very first episode yet I've watched the entire season now and they haven't shown it.

This is what I fear as well for that division.

I'm hoping Brookins wins TUF tonight. Been the most impressed with him. If he loses to Johnson perhaps he's just not that good afterall. Because Johnson doesnt look all that.

Daley Vs. Smith should be a fun fight but really I'd just like to see him put in a fight where he needs to use wrestling. Because last time out he was still rubbish with it
