The MMA thread

I won't link it as Till's team decided to take it down after getting a bit of backlash.
But he released a video of his weight cut which looked pretty horrible, complained he was losing his vision at times aswell.

He should just move up to MW.

He’s probably next in line...unless Cody loses again and then we’ll get TJ vs Cody III

You mean if Cody wins? I think yeah they might do the 3rd one and get done with it.

But i think TJ should get it done once again.

If this happens, i think the options for TJ are:

a) fight MM in a superfight.
b) rematch Cruz.
c) fight Moraes.

knowing the UFC and TJ, option A and B are the most likely options, specially B, because will be hard to convince MM to sign the fight.

This would leave Moraes free to fight Cody or hopefully Hands of Stone. @Pat_Mustard

Yeah sorry it was a bad joke. FWIW I think if Cody wins TJ won't get the rematch, I imagine he has to do what he did last time and fight a load of contenders (as it should be, just double standards Cody got immediate rematch.)

225 this weekend, 2 brilliant fights on there with Romero vs. Whittaker and RDS vs. Covington. Likes of Overeem, Benavidez, Sergio Pettis, Lamas, Gadelha all on prelims to accommodate CM Punk. I'd probably of put the Gadelha fight on the main card personally if they insist on having a women's fight on there (and CM Punk obviously.) Overeem vs. Blaydes and Pettis vs. Benavidez should be on the main card for me as well instead of some of the fights that made it.

I had no problem with CM Punk being in UFC until this fight card was announced. He's on the main card and my boy Ubereem isn't? feck that

Yeah I was never overly bothered by him being around at the first fight. I'm genuinely curious how much interest there is in him a second time round. His last fight was on a pretty poor card so I'm sure he did actually boost numbers on that one. There is that curiosity of how he'd get on but we know the answer now, he did awful. This time he's on a strong card and has ended up on the main show (I accept he's never going to be on the prelims due to his name....as soon as he stops drawing he gets cut I'd guess.) Benavidez and Pettis being on the early prelims is ridiculous, could be a good fight that but no one will see it.

Let the hype begin

Covington is trying SOO hard its difficult to watch.
Whittaker-Romero is the one I'm looking forward too the most though. Amazing to think Yoel is 41 ffs! Think Whittaker stops him this time round.

Is there a more likable guy in MMA than Robert Whitaker? His baby girl is too cute.

Unfortunately likability can work against you in the UFC in terms of PPV draw. In most instances, its the cnuts and hype merchants who draw the most viewers. GSP and maybe one or two others being the exception.

You're talking about McGregor and Jon Jones aren't you? ;)

McGregor's likability is in a bit of peril at the moment. ;)

Haha very true.

You are right though I can't think of many hwo are likable people and do well with numbers. GSP, Anderson Silva are 2 off the top of my head. Ronda wasn't always a complete dick and drew pretty well on cards she headlined. I am struggling though to think of more.

The cases I always think of are Mighty Mouse ,Tyron Woodley, and Max Holloway. All great fighters, great champs, and nice guys - and all are not considered big draws. Then you think of guys like Covington, the Diaz brothers, Tony Ferguson and others who have big mouths and are good draws.

Trying to think of an exception, was Liddell particularly obnoxious? Can barely remember his fights at this stage, let alone everything else.

It's definitely harder to be a big draw as the nice guy.

Joe Lauzon? Sure he drew more as his fights normally delivered, but he was never a headliner, even in his prime. Carlos Condit maybe.

You have to separate the Zuffa UFC eras into three parts - the first is after the Fertitas bought it until around 2008 or so, then 2009 until 2014 and then the McGregor era.

During the first two periods, you could more or less get away without being a hype merchant. Once Conor rolled into town, it immediately incentivized others to play to the cameras and social media with WWE type hype tactics.

To be honest mate I’m not sure what the problem for the fighters is. Even the ones you name none are particularly massive draws (I don’t think Nate does great numbers without Conor.) Ferguson vs Lee did awful numbers for example.

I think fighters do need to promote themselves somewhat but the UFC needs to help them out as well which they don’t do.

Look at someone like Ricky Hatton back in his prime, he was hugely popular, a nice guy and entertaining to watch. AJ is similar, I wouldn’t be confident the UFC could build them up to the level they got to....I watched some of GSP on Rogan and he was saying Dana is best promoter ever that’s bollocks for me.

Yeah true. Man, Conor really has been an mma pain in the ass.

People like AJ and Hatton ate popular because they're from a smaller country and are the top of their games. I guess it's harder for Americans and Brazilians as there are so many good ones out there but look at GSP & Bisping, smaller nations so more people get behind them. Think if Whittaker keeps smashing people, his numbers will increase.

The UFC need to push fighters also. Someone like Gregor Gillispie is decent on the mic, relentless fighting style and has a great fishing gimmick, if UFC don't promote this guy properly, they're a joke.

Man Whittaker is the guy. Elder Scrolls haha.

Colby is just hard to watch. At least with the other trash talkers like McGregor, Bisping, Jones etc there's some belief in what they say. Fair play to him for trying it's just really hard to watch.

Yeah fair comment. Maybe Till is the one they will get behind now and it would make some sense in fairness to them.
