The MMA thread

Its been ages since a UFC event. Can't really feel the hype for this one even though the main fight is something i previously looked forward to. Can't quite shake the suspicion that someone will pull out.

Yeah same, the AKA factor puts me off to be honest so I'm sceptical about DC! Guy hasn't defended his title since October 2015 as well which is crazy (though in fairness the Jon Jones UFC 200 fiasco was not his fault.) I don't mind either DC or Rumble but think DC would have to much for him, if he survives a potential early onslaught then DC wins easily for me. Co-main should be good as well Weidman has lost a couple but he's looked decent in them fights in parts and he lost to the number 1 and 2 in his division it's argued so no great shame. Other than that it's a weak card.

FYI any UK fans who have the UFC on series link, check it's still on there cos they keep switching the channel between BT Sport 1 and 3 and it cancelled the Series link on mine so didn't record UFC 209 (they've changed channel again for UFC 210 I think cos I've had to set it again.)

It never links for me. I have to always do it manually

Hmm, mine used to will have to remember in future to keep doing it manually. As long as no one misses it thats the main thing!
Yep! I normally have withdrawal symptoms after these long breaks but I'm hardly excited for this. Either main or co-main have a drop out and it falls flat completely.

YEah worrying cos DC is AKA and Weidman has had a few pull outs from memory.

Does line up a few good weeks again though. 210 this weekend, DJ weekend after, Artem vs Swanson is a random fight the week after that.

Saw the thread active and was almost too scared to check

Also like you lot am fearing an injury

Card is a good one imo, something is bound to happen

You just can't write this material. DC is totally right about Jon Jones being desperate as well, there's no way his management should have let him attend the event IMO. At the end of the day he is still probably the greatest fighter in the company and DC/Rumble would have to chase him regardless, he should have just stayed away and let them call him out.

I can definitely see DC winning and Jones causing some sort of incident where he calls him out, outside the Octagon after the fight.

I reckon the UFC have probably asked him to go to the event as well. Dana will be pushing him towards the Octagon at the end of the fight! He's also from New York so it probably suits him to go there, might be seeing friends/family etc at the same time.

DC commentated on one of Jones fights so it's not like he's never around for the fights.

Stupid how weed is on the USADA list really

DC was never banned for PED's. Should stay away until his suspension is up, no respect for the ban.

True but again I'd be surprised if the UFC didn't ask him to come.

Equally I'm sure DC is really quite happy Jones is there. He's the biggest name by far in the division and if he beats Rumble it's probably the only interesting fight for DC left at LHW.

Why the feck would they make it for an interim title when the current champion is healthy and defending his belt? Romero's a tool. No desire to see him against Silva anyway. I'd rather him against either Rockhold or a rematch against Jacare. That division is stacked.

5 mins to go and no DC or Rumble at the weigh in yet.....

EDIT: No title available for DC - 206.2 lbs
EDIT 2: DC makes weight second attempt with seconds left 205
EDIT 3: Rumble 203.8

WOW what drama. Title fight is on, Crazy.

It's also suspicious that DC weighs in 206.2 first time round and then second time 205, then Rumble comes out and weighs with pants on at 203.8, exactly the 1.2lbs under the limit that DC had to shed.

So many people going off on DC across the net in regards to him suddenly losing the lb in a matter of minutes. For feck sake guys at least we actually have a main event on our hands. Don't care if he held down on a towel, I want to see this fight!

I think the fight would have still gone ahead, only it would be a Chael Sonnen v Paulo Filho situation and that shouldn't be allowed to happen. So I can see why they let the obvious towel trick pass. It would be unfair on Rumble. To this day people say Sonnen never won a title. That would be awful for Rumble if the same thing happened.

happy we have a main event, but i would be happier if they respect the rules.

some serious cheating going on.

ps. I'm changing sides. Now on Rumble corner for this one.

I'm glad the fights on but it is pretty disrespectful to the other fighters and the rules. DC is a champion and a professional fighter so missing weight is always amateurish. I'd be intrigued if it was Jones who missed weight how unprofessional he'd be called.

I hope Rumble takes this as I'm getting a bit tired of DC and his drama.

what about Weidman and Mousasi?

i want Weidman to win but analysing it objectively, Mousasi is better at almost everything, specially the most important aspect, striking.

If Weidman can't take the fight to the ground, he might end up being picked apart. He will need to impose his will somehow. I really hope he finds a way. 3 losses in a row would be too much.

edit. Having that asshole around (Vilante) really gives me less hope for Weidman. That guy is a terrible fighter, one of the worst in the UFC... for sure a negative impact.

So a lot of people are saying DC used the towel to take the weight of his arms. Never seen a weight in like before, it's crazy

I don't think Mousasi is better at almost everything over Weidman. It'll be a close fight though I agree. I like both of them but wouldn't mind Weidman doing it.

Villante seems a nice enough guy I've always thought, he'd a bit of a joker but it seems harmless fun really. Look at the embedded's before Weidman vs. Rockhold and he's joking around with Rockhold for a portion of it so I doubt he's an asshole or anything. He's just a sparring partner for Weidman really, he's not going to be a brilliant fighter. Weidman has been a world champion with Villante training with him, Conor was a double world champion with Artem as his main sparring partner.

I'm hoping the moose beats Weidman. I like mousasi. Gonna be close fight.

Hope rumble beats DC into the middle of next week.

Conor is a natural talent. The guy could have sparred with his dog and he would still have beaten the midgets en route to the double belt.

But if he were to fight el Cucuy, would Artem still be his only partner? no... Conor brings guys from all over the place to train with him. He always does.

Weidman on the other hand, is just a really good wrestler. He is not a super talented fighter. He needs to keep learning tricks and pushing himself to be at his very best all the time. having a guy like Vilante involved at everything, can give you a false sense of improvement in my opinion.

The guy obviously is a joker (not an asshole) and maybe even a nice guy, but if i were Weidman, i would separate "friends" and "work". Even his coach said they have reached some kind of plateu level with him, and that could very well be because relaxation inside the camp.

Vilante is just a big punching bag, there is no more he can help Weidman with.

I'm sure Weidman trains with other fighters other than Villante as well though.

Equally he may like having Villante round on fight week. He may be good for his morale, they always seem to be having good fun with each other and it will help on fight week when there's a lot of stress with weight cuts etc. Each to their own I suppose though.

Re the McGregor comment, he is a natural talent but I think you're underselling his team massively, McGregor himself always gives credit to the likes of Lobov for their help.

Given the choice everyone of us would have prayed he reached out for that towel.
If he missed weight I would seriously reconsider my fandom of the sport

Everyone needs to understand that Rumble benefits most from this. He more than anyone needed DC to rest his hands on the towel. I seriously doubt this was DC "cheating." He went out back and the NY commission and UFC probably colluded together to work out a way around this, with no one being in more support of it than Rumble. Had DC missed weight the fight would still have gone ahead, but the title wouldn't be on the line. Everyone was complicit in this and Rumble would have been delighted when DC "made" weight.
