The MMA thread

How odd. Can't imagine it's anything other than posturing over pay.

As if UFC 200 wasn't gash enough already. Hopefully they book Lawler in for a title defence.

I think Dana and Lorenzo had to put a line in the sand, as Conor was just going to ask for more and more and it was cutting into their profits, not to mention the laughable pay disparity between Conor and the other top fighters.

The more laughable disparity in fairness is that between what the UFC takes him and what they give back to fighters. It's not McGregor's fault he got so much money fair fecks to him. His rumoured purse of $1million for his last fight is actually pretty laughable when compared to most decent level boxers (not even the top ones.) Obviously he gets more on top of that but it's still pretty poor for a company of that size. Equally McGregor brought a lot of eyes to the sport so does deserve his reward for it, I never get this "everyone should be treated the same" ideology people have. It's not just reality in any job. McGregor is the most profitable star they have = he gets more money. The same thing happened with Brock Lesnar and Ronda Rousey, the same thing happens in boxing with Mayweather at his peak, Hatton at his peak, it happens in football Rooney and Rashford don't get paid the same money. The reality is the more profitable and more successful stars will get much more money than everyone else. If UFC fighters can't see the reasoning for that then they're idiots really.

Fair play to the guy for trying to make as much money as he can and retire young it's an aspiration for everyone surely to be honest. I don't think it'll last for what it's worth I think he'll end up coming back after some kind of negotiation. It's also not his problem what other fighters make that's for them to sort out really and sell themselves to make the money.

I've just passed through Loughrea and Ballinasloe and noticed 'Closed due to unforeseen circumstances' signs on the two fairly recently set up MMA/BJJ gyms.

Looking like that's the beginning of the end of the pop up shop MMA type gyms here in Ireland now too. There seems to be one operating in every village and town lately. Easy known it wouldn't last.

:lol::lol:

I honestly think he's got an lengthy injury mainly because of the timing of this. UFC 200 is very close and a MASSIVE pay day and a chance to avenge his loss then go out on a high so doesnt make sense to pull out now. He probably got an ACL injury or something like that but cant say it due to his ridiculing of Aldo and RDA so he's retiring and will be back in about a year for the biggest pay day of all.

Alternatively, as Helwani suggested, he probably didnt want to/wasnt ready to do the media obligations in Vegas so soon after the death of that MMA fighter in Ireland.

Either way, it will be interesting to see how the UFC move forward with the Aldo vs. Edgar fight... surely cant be interim anymore?

I've heard the injury theory....or PEDs. Both do actually make sense to be fair.

Funny with the Vegas thing now as what has happened in the last 24 hours is more promotion than that presser would of ever got!

Yeah I think it will be for the title can't see how it isn't now that champion is retired.

I wonder what they'll do with the main event? Diaz vs. someone else isn't as nearly a good option. Whatever happened in the last fight the Conor factor was still a selling point. Who's their biggest names after him? Jones and Rousey I'd suggest and Rousey won't be fighting and I can't see Jones fighting this weekend and again at 200.

Also what do they do with Diaz? Do they keep him on the card? He was surely getting big money for the fight vs. Conor again? They won't want to pay him that vs. anyone else.

They'll look for another opponent for Diaz... maybe Tony if he's healed up? Then they can bring in Robbie Lawlor but not sure who he'll fight as Woodley is a crap fight... maybe Condit? OR they can do Nate vs. Lawler as Nate's already training for WW and bring in a compltely new fight to round out the card... there are possibilities but they'll wait until Bones fights OSP to asses that before making their decision I reckon.

Huh? He's opened himself up to far more ridicule announcing retirement during the build up to a fight with a guy who clowned him a few months back than he would by declaring an ACL injury.

True. Or maybe the potential marketing of 'Comeback of the King' storyline has more dollar signs in his head... All we have heard is the UFC side of the story though. Will be VERY interesting to hear Conor's.

There absolutely no way it's PED's. The only people suggesting that are the ones who dislike him. The most tested fighter in UFC is not going to be all of a sudden tested for drugs. And there is no way around USADA, no matter what dork on a forum tells you about "designer drugs".

Bit defensive about it aren't you? Don't think anyone 100% suggested it was...just it's not beyond the realms of possibility. Lance Armstrong used to be one of the most tested athletes as well you know by the way?

We've come a long way since then. The process for testing for drugs is impossible to get around. You take ped's, you ain't going last 10-15 years without being caught vis a vis Lance Armstrong.

True. I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility that top level athletes can be drug tested and get away with it though. I'd be hugely surprised if it wasn't the case that there's some athletes on PEDs. Not suggesting McGregor is one of them either but personally I'd think that the likes of boxing and MMA have more than people would think.

Nonsense.

New PEDs and masking agents are being developed all the time. Plus you have the lag time between a substance being abused and it being outlawed. See: Maria Sharapova

McGregor has only been around for a couple years.

The drug she was taking was only outlawed a couple of months ago, plus, you have people coming out saying that there was a big cover up with Russian athletes and their governing body messing around with samples.

That's what I'm saying. She was taking it for years before it got outlawed

Really cannot stand UFC fans when it comes to rumours and what they want to believe.
Conor is now scared of Nate and / or failed a drugs test. Thats it. End of discussion. Prove us wrong.
Its like when Conor showed up dressed as El Chapo for the RDA press conference and it became fact he was high on coke. Clearly. Fact. It's then referenced time and time again as a stick to beat him with.
If he has failed a test then retiring will not stop it being made public. It makes no sense to cause this song and dance if its coming to light anyway.
Its a money grab. Nothing more imo.

If Jones wins easily this weekend then he *could* fight DC at UFC200. There's about enough time in between the fights.

Beyond that, I'd imagine Ronda and GSP have been getting phone calls with big offers attached.

To fight each other?

It's a money ploy or a timeout after the death of that lad

OR he's going to turn up in WWE. He's got the swagger and mic skills, could probably make more money. Watch this space

Can't imagine he's make more money in the WWE. Even Brock Lesnar does not earn nearly what Conor did this past year.

Also, Conor is a skinny 5'9" guy with zero wrestling background. There's no way the WWE would be seriously interested enough to offer the type of dosh he'd want.

Wrestling background is pretty meaningless, but if he bulked up he'd probably fit in fine, WWE fudge the height and weight numbers plenty. He'd be no smaller than Jericho, Guerrero, or Chris Benoit.
