The MMA thread

A mate of mine was onto McGregor's father, all he says is that Conor is over in Iceland training and that he hasn't heard anything.

I can see this being a WUM, where Conor does an about face and fights at 200 and the event winds up being twice as big as previously expected.

Kavanagh on Facebook

"Mate of mine did his 1st apprenticeship in plumbing 7 years ago. Looking to start up again"

McGregor gonna be a plumber

That would be some career change. Mind you he could charge a fortune and people would pay it. Imagine having McGregor round to fix your toilet

He'd be a terrible plumber.

"I'm not here to take your toilet apart, I'm here to take it over".

Just goes in and sits down in there for hours then.

Imagine if this is true though... Well be a shame but worth it to see Dana cry like a bitch. Still don't believe it... The next few days will be interesting...

We can pretty much assume Helwani is right when he says sources are saying it isn't a joke or a wum.

That doesn't necessarily mean he really will retire either though. Some sort of dispute between McGregor and the UFC would seem the most logical answer, with this being a stunt to put pressure on them. Not like there haven't been reports of tensions between him and the UFC before now.

Rumour of a 9 figure offer to fight / box Mayweather but you take that with a pinch of salt.

Ariels a WUM.

Multiple sources would be Kavanagh's twitter and Kavanagh's facebook...

Nah Helwani takes his job super seriously. He didn't even do an April fool's joke to protect his integrity. The sources could be wrong but I doubt he's WUMing

Not WUM I suppose, but he's always adding fuel to rumors rather then actually giving us some solid information.

Part of his job, I guess. Keep people engaged and visiting his website.

Obviously not a news source, but summing up potential reasons why there may be some truth to it.

He is probably trolling but its important to note a few things that make it conceivable:

  • He just watched his teammate kill a guy 1 year older than Mcgregor in an MMA match

  • Mcgregor pretty much retired from MMA before getting the call from the UFC after a good friend of his got seriously hurt from MMA

  • Mcgregor has said from the beginning he was just going to come in, make money, and then leave

  • Mcgregor has knee problems
Id lean towards it not being true but there are few things that make it conceivable

UPDATE: Ariel Helwani is reporting multiple sources are saying it isnt a joke and very legit. Crazy. Good on Mcgregor for stepping out on his own terms at only 27.

No way is he pulling out of 200. His ego is too big for that.

There might be some negotiations behind the scenes but most likely, he's just trolling.

I think Dana and Lorenzo had to put a line in the sand, as Conor was just going to ask for more and more and it was cutting into their profits, not to mention the laughable pay disparity between Conor and the other top fighters.

White saying he was pulled for not attending the press conference as he wanted to keep preparing in Iceland....?

Wonder if poor Aldo and Frankie will still be fighting for the interim title...

This came out of the blue.

Do wonder when the whole truth (if ever) will come out

Dana was just on ESPN (i missed it) but there should be clips uploaded in a sec.

Not expecting him to tell the whole truth though. Or would be very surprised if he did. (Above post saying Dana said it was related to not attending a press conference - sounds fishy)

You know what is crazy? What if Conor had beaten Diaz/Dos Anjos originally, then planned this stunt when theoretically facing GSP for 200.

Could see how it comes together. Obviously the whole story is probably bits and pieces of everything we hear, but he obviously wasn't used to the power in a higher weight class. Once he felt that, he was obviously shaken up, and we saw how the fight played out from there. That, tied in with watching his teammate put the fighter in the hospital, and later pass away, could certainly weigh on his mind and consider the possibilities.

Plus he's made the money he came to make. And can retire like he was planning on anyway. If he was comfortable retiring before the UFC millions, I'm sure he still is now.
