He said he would preserve the first round, let Mcgregor come out and attack and then from the second round on start to work his way into the game. Also said he didn't expect Conor to go down in the second (In the octagon interview) so probably expected an even second round or in Mcgregors favour. He was aiming for the KO/Submission in this fight and clearly felt he could get it vs Mcgregor, which he did.

Only 3 things I could think of from that interview:

1 : Nate Diaz seems borderline retarded
2 : That member of the entourage behind them was fecking huge
3 : That interviewer was amazing

Diaz was making excuses for why he was getting tagged by Conor. He has always been easy enough to hit on full camps so I see no reason how its an excuse tbh.
Plus a fighter with no camp would not plan to take the fight into the later rounds. It makes no sense.

Really hope it's McGregor/Edgar at UFC 200. Feck Jose Aldo. Frankie may pose a bigger threat what with his wrestling but he deserves it.

To be fair to McGregor it was always going to be a huge step up. For the style of fighter he is even with the extra mass it would be difficult to add enough power to his striking to overcome his shortcomings. He essentially had to put on about 25lbs to a 5ft 9 inch frame which is a huge amount. Diaz had the height advantage and was closer to his more natural fight weight.

I think in hindsight McGregor should have kept at 145lbs for a title defense or alternatively when RDA pulled out insist on an opponent who could make 155lbs. In my opinion at this weight we would have seen a different Conor McGregor (Not to guarantee victory but enough to allow him to put up a decent fight). He is not a mat based fighter so any encounters like this with a much heavier (than he is used to) guy on top was going to be disastrous

In fairness in the first round, Nate caught his leg and took him down and McGregor pulled off a beautiful sweep and ended up in top position. The reason he was submitted was because he dropped his hands, and kept his head static, got clocked with a beautiful one- two, probably thinking he could take the shots and got rocked, and went into "panic mode" as he said himself.

Aldo's words are very stupid considering the guy got knocked out in 13 seconds. TO play devils advocate though McGregor arguably talked himself into many opportunities as well. Aldo is just doing the same thing
I don't mind Aldo talking it up for a title shot our to sell PPVs but at least think about what you're saying... Here he comes off deluded. Maybe he hasn't recovered from that beating yet

That kick was poor though. Not like his kicks at all normally.

A fair bit of snide commentary about in Ireland since the loss. Not just about McGregor, about MMA generally.

Easy to grow tired of McGregor but I'd much prefer to have him winning and being obnoxious than have him lose and listen to idiots taking the opportunity to knock him and the sport.

Heard one idiot on the radio suggesting martial arts were a fad. Presumably he thinks they were just invented in the 00's.

I agree it's stupid but it's working. People are reacting to it now....I think he'll generate more interest than an Edgar fight. The UFC will want to keep the McGregor fans on board who don't have any other interest in UFC. I'd say Aldo is the man to do that over Edgar. Even on my Facebook people who only really care about McGregor and not the UFC are reacting to it.

Champion for ten years, not sure anyone in the featherweight division deserves the next title shot more than Aldo. Just very unfortunate for Edgar.
He lost in 13 seconds. Frankie has won all but one of his FW fights. Let him fight and give Aldo some more time out.

I think the fact that he lost in 13 warrants a shot because unlike someone like Ronda, who got schooled and then knocked out, Aldo got caught with a great shot but if that fight happened another 10 times, getting caught and sparked like that so quickly will probably not happen. The fight didnt show who's the better fighter, it showed that Aldo got caught clean instantly and was out.

Having said that, Edgar has also done really well and was promised a shot but then again, Cerrone had to win many more fights than Edgar before he got a shot at the LW title and we all know that Dana's promises are as concrete as a house of cards. Edgar also lost to Aldo, so that plays a part.

It's going to completely depend on which fight makes the most money and I reckon that's a rematch with Aldo as he's the one spouting shit since Conor lost and his shit is the one that Conor has already responded to. The narrative has already begun.

Nate gave Conor a glorious bitchslap 2 minutes into the first round.

It was glorious indeed. Still looking for an animated gif of when Nate clocked Conor in the 2nd round, which rocked him and caused Nate to go into a brief taunt.

He weighed in at 168 the night before the fight. Nate was at 169 the night before the fight. That means neither fighter cut water weight in that final day, as they usually do. Basically it was a LW fight, but without a weight cut. So it wasn't a huge step up. Let's say he fought a proper welter weight, then the night before the fight his opponent would weigh about 180 - 190 and be in the middle of a water cut to make weight. Most LW's weigh about the same as both Connor and Nate the night before and during the fight. So the only difference is there was no water cut in between.

Basically he and RDA would have weighed the same as he and Nate did on fight night. Both Nate and Connor are natural LW's, and thus the only difference for fighting at WW was that they didn't have to cut. That's all it is. People are talking as if Connor took on a proper WW who comes into the cage at 190.

From what we saw on Saturday, Connor would really struggle against RDA, who had no problems against Nate. Remember that when RDA and Nate were in the cage, they'd have both been around 170. The same as Connor and Nate were on Saturday and the as Connor would have been had he fought RDA.

Aldo doesn't deserve it. Edgar does.

Edgar deserves feck all. Aldo has already beaten him and he's hardly much of a draw in contrast to an Aldo rematch. Getting Conor a spot at 200 v Aldo in addition to the ladies rematch, and possible welterweight and light weight title fights is essential.

This is a good article on Mcgregors style changing negatively. Came out after the Mendes fight so not the benefit of hindsight either.

I was just talking about this with my friend. Even the Brimage and Holloway fights he used beautiful head movement and counter striking. Hope it's something the Diaz fight thought him and Kavanagh. Stop walking opponents down. Stop predicting things for the media. Go back to Conor the counter striker.

Yeah I don't get why people in here struggle with this. He's not the only one. Theres other that talk as if McGregor walks around at 145 and bulked to take a fight at 170 and now has to do the 'Machinist diet' to get a walk around weight of 145.

Some really struggle with the concept of weight cutting.

Good article.

"Fighters who eat knuckle sandwiches like they’re on a Subway diet don’t tend to have much longevity. Damage mounts, durability fades, chins crack. Smooth talkers find that they’ve misplaced their precious, precious brain cells."

“McGregor seems to be learning that he doesn’t need the full extent of his skill to win. For the most part, he’s right. He can take an opponent’s shot just fine, and his opponents can’t take his. It seems obvious, really, to worry less about the small things and focus more on hitting the opponent, because all it takes is one to end the fight. And each time the opponent defends or counters, it just takes one more.”

“This is the puncher’s path, and it leads to oblivion.”

So fecking true. McGregors has way too much boxing talent to be eating shots.

Those iron chins still need to be looked after because they don't last forever and they can completely disappear with one punch.
