The MMA thread

What? Conor landed harder shots in the first, but the striking was close otherwise, + a take down for Nate. Conor won the round, but it was a very close round. Then he got absolutely exposed.

Not only did he get choked out in about 9 seconds on the ground, but he got SCHOOLED standing. Oh, and I don't even like Nate or Nick. Their fans are almost as delusional as Conors.

So if he won the first round, how was the fight not competitive? He got whipped on the ground, but the fight was competitive. Ridiculous comment.

And Connor took it to the ground. Huge mistake.

He did it out of desperation, ala Cain vs Werdum.

Too much weight on Conor's frame, he was flat footed and the reach advantage proved huge for Diaz, who is the better pure boxer.

For the MMA boys who only started watching their first match for Mcgregor, just because Diaz was bleeding alot, doesnt mean he was losing in the first round, the Diaz brothers usually bleed alot in their fights, as the commentator said, they have alot of scar tissue so they bleed easy,

The first round was evenly matched, then second mc gregor showed how weak his chin is, and how shit his ground game is, got totally schooled

The UFC matchmakers will be looking back and thinking why the feck did we book that fight at that weight. We've just cost ourselves millions.

To everyone else, it was obvious.

The height/reach difference is a big factor as well. Fighting at that weightclass was something he shouldn't have done.

Yeah, most definitely. Jumping from a division where he has a clear reach, height, and power advantage to a division where he's the "smaller" guy, suddenly what can you rely on? He's finished fights with a powerful left hand, but he has not much else to fall back on if that fails. He busted Diaz up, but he never really seemed close to being in a position to finish.

Too many things against him here. Has to figure things out now from here. Hopefully it doesn't all unravel for him, because I genuinely like him as a fighter, but he'll struggle with these bigger guys, especially without a ground game, and 145 might be a brutal cut for him now.

Id say he's closer to ending up without a title, rather than two. Dana will be shitting bricks.

Yeah, the power does't translate to 170. First round I thought to myself, ah, just another night as Nate looked sloppy. Then come the second round Conor starts throwing horrible, wild punches. I was shocked at his cardio, gassing against someone who doesn't gas in Nate Diaz means you're fecked.

His body can't support that extra muscle. He should never fight at 170 again.

i doubt he can build the extra muscle for 170 in 2 weeks. It was just pure liquid retention.

he need to properly bulk up, and that takes time. he thought physics don't apply to him.

Not at all. Just saying quite a few people I know from lower/working class areas in the UK are a lot like Mcgregor. Where they can turn on the drop of a hat really and will go to extremes to "beat" you, so to speak. Not saying all lower class/working class population do that, just I have known quite a few from lower class like that in the UK.

Yeah sorry pal, jumped the gun a bit haha

no more steaks, that's for sure.

Dunno why so many of his fans want him back to 145, you might see one more genuine fight out of him from doing that. Going down in weight is harder than going up. But yeah, I didn't really understand the hype he got, one fluke 13 second win.....and he's this massive superstar, I never heard of him prior to the Aldo fight, odd. Similar to Ronda, who I hadn't heard of before 2015 either....UFC creates stars so quickly, and understandably so, since they seem to lose in no time nowadays.

It's not like when winning machines who genuinely great were at the top in Anderson and GSP.

Yep they need to think very carefully about who to fight next. Aldo rematch is looking tastier I imagine.

Awesome win for Nate.

Clipped him right on the button in that second round and he never recovered.

Holly Holm was punching air for 5 rounds. Great game plan from Tate.

Lets not try and rewrite history. Mcgregor was putting dudes away in spectacular fashion at FW. Combined with his showmanship and Irish support it's easy to understand the hype. As so often happens though, these fighters ego's get too big and they think they can do anything. That's what makes a champion like GSP so impressive, he always stayed grounded.

He was going to fight Dos Anjos. That could have been nasty for him.

Yeah RdA would've been a different set of problems for him and could've resulted in the same result as tonight. People simply punch harder at higher weight classes.

Tate was always going to be difficult for Holm....looking back now its not hard to see how easy of a time Holm had against Rousey...she can become crazy dominant if she gets some ground skills....not sure Rousey should get a title shot right away....they should make her fight Holm again and then look into a Tate fight.

I'm obviously Irish, as my lack of originality in choosing a username highlights; so I want to see him doing well and all. I do think he got too cocky though.

Nate Diaz is a bad match up really (with hindsight tbh). He's much taller, has better cardio, infinitely better on the ground and extremely hard to knock out. Bad choice like.

Yep. Saying that he couldnt even make 170 despite admitting he was eating double breakfasts. Id say he was fighting around 165 tonight while Nate would have have soared past the limit on fight night.
All respect for Conor taking tbe fight. He handpicked Nate while Dana was trying to feed him Faber.
Im sure the plan was to fight RDA and take the title. If he loses he doesnt really lose anything he was still the featherweight killer. It was one shot.
Now he has to take the shot after a reckless choice in Diaz. Lose aginst RDA and God knows where he goes from there.
Conor facing Diaz was a ridiculous business decision.

I think he can still have a go at 155, he's camp was based on a 155 fight. He had an extra 13lbs coming into this fight that the planned weight, extra 23lbs than he usually fights at. Think he'll go back to 145 then try 155 again, or just stay at 155 and try and go for the belt as planned.

Most definitely not

Yep they need to think very carefully about who to fight next. Aldo rematch is looking tastier I imagine.

I know he likes to fight often, and maybe the money is the motivator for him, but he needs to take a bit of time between fights too. Taking them so often, especially winning a few back to back, suddenly he starts dipping in to his own hype too much.

Maybe someone can argue that it's just his fight persona, but if he had some extra time between his last fight and this, he might have gotten his body adjusted to the extra weight etc. honestly though, I don't think he can hang with the top guys at a higher weight class. These aren't the guys he fought in other promotions, these are the best of the best, and stepping up against them without adjusting to the division would always end badly.

I think once he no longer can make the cut to 145, he stops becoming a top tier fighter. I just hope he doesn't turn into an Irish Chael Sonnen.

Ahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahah.

fecking hype train derailed by a 2nd tier 155'r with 10 days notice.

Conor McGregor is what ive said he was since day 1. He is hypemachine version whatever.

Sorry lads, I know a bunch of you have had your noses buried so far up his ass that the lump in his throat is your nose.

It wasn't even competitive.

As an Irishman and huge Conor fan you can firstly look through previous posts and see I didn't fancy him at all against Aldo or Mendes. I simply love it when he wins

But where the feck do you get off saying it wasn't competitive. McGregor lit him up for a round and a half before going down

Apparently Nate said, 'I would have more knockouts but when I start hitting 'em they become wrestlers'

That's pretty funny because I think Conor said something before about people taking desperation shots too. It's some lines like that, that reassure me Nate Diaz isn't as brain damaged as he sounds.

Lol he's not getting the RDA fight after this performance

Right now the whole two weight division thing he was going for is over.

He should now be penned in to face Frankie Edgar @ UFC 200.

Yeah looking back it seems it would only end one way. The problem is that he's knocked out so many people with that left, that it seems powerful. Unfortunately there's no way to know how powerful it is against a guy who is now 10-20 pounds heavier, and taller, and who hasn't been knocked out before. Now we know.

Entertaining to watch, and he's a great promoter for his fights. Hope he hasn't just been shown up as a flash in the pan. He needs more in his tool belt than just a left hand.

I actually thought and still think, Diaz was a perfect match up if he had wanted to move up. RDA could have been a million time worse

The ultimate nightmare scenario might unfold for Dana and Lorenzo - Conor moves up to fight at a higher weight and loses, then goes back to defend his 145 belt against Edgar and loses, then gets an Aldo rematch and loses again. A completely plausible scenario.

And please stop quoting Nucks. Going by his logic, Holly Holm is too, a flash in the pan because she got submitted by a journeywoman.

Who's trying to rewrite history? I just said I've seen one fight of him before, which was insanely flukey, all wins like that are, I don't care who you are, I'll call a 20 seconds or less fight a fluke. And it's turned him into a monster superstar it seems, and he's quickly been put in his place.

Ronda and Conor were trying to do the Floyd schtick too much. Especially when Floyd was a genius tactician, not a knockout artist.

There's no chance he is fighting RDA next after this. It's going to be a 145 fight for sure.
This is a fight promotion. No way Conor isnt going for tbe belt at UFC 200. This was such a bad decision that Dana cannot risk Conor losing to Frankie then the star is dead.
Conor would not have taken this fight unless RDA was guarenteed imo. He has too much business sense.
This is a blow but its not a disaster. He just found his physical limit. De La Hoya did the exact same thing in his prime and it didnt really set him back.
There is a reason why there is no such thing as a 3 weight world champion in UFC.

He should give Frankie his shot at 200 while Nate fights RDA. Then Conor should move to lightweight permanent and work his way to a title shot rather than being handed one. That weight cut is a joke, there should be a limit to how much people are allowed to cut in UFC, it's dangerous.

MacGregor got cocky and didn't finish things when he could have. He hurt Diaz enough that if he pushed the issue earlier, instead of jawing in between every hit, he would have won. Let his hands drop as he kept looking for the Hollywood KO. Opened it up for Diaz to get back in, who didn't waste his chance when it came. Showed his experience there.

He was already a superstar before the Aldo fight, which was why it broke the PPV record. Go back and look at his UFC run up to that point. Obviously there is a point where the hype goes too far but there was a good reason for it and it wasn't just based on one 'freak' knockout. He talked the talk and was putting guys away in impressive fashion.
