The MMA thread

I'm a bit surprised to see the media calling this an upset. Nate is a more well rounded fighter. Conman is a dangerous striker but that is about it. He is the type of fighter from these shores that gets found out at the elite level.

Gunni Nelson is a top 15 welterweight. Although a very small one at that. His frame would be more suited to LW.
It was a joke. Nate was saying all before the fight that Conor doesn't train with the best and he will make him pay for not doing so. Time for Mcgregor to cast aside his loyalties for a minute and bring in some of the best in the game to train with. Whether he will or not I don't know.

Will be interesting to see if they do Rousey/Holm 2 or Rousey/Tate for the title. Dana saying October time for Rousey the other day but I wouldn't be shocked to see that change and her make UFC 200. It'd be funny to see her destroy Tate yet again but it's an interesting situation they have, Rousey probably wants to try to get revenge for the Holm loss.

Crazy main event. Didn't see Diaz winning it but seems Conor's energy and conditioning was pretty piss poor to be perfectly frank. Diaz is capable of taking the shots and still come back, McGregor wasn't after a while. Dana said McGregor/Lawler was likely for 200 had he won here. Crazy moment either way.

The hate for Mcgregor on here after him losing is hilarious, it's self promotion, it's how he earns so much and because he makes people like you watch him fight. (See Mayweather)

Have to agree with some posts about his fighting though, he looked gassed in the second, looked one dimensional by just using his left which is strange considering he packs one hell of a kick. For me he was winning both rounds easy until he took that huge shot to the chin which completely ended the fight from there. Going to ground or not Diaz was about to knock him out. I noticed it in his last fights is he leaves his chin way too exposed, being weary and trying to block instead of showboat dodge (Like Silva) cost him going further rounds, especially since Diaz is in no way a slow boxer.

170 is way too much of a jump and it cost him. I feel sorry for Mcgregor though, he's dream of fighting for his second belt which I believe he would've won easily derailed his entire plan to eventually fight Lawler at UFC 200 for a third. Now this loss completely kills that dream and he'll find it impossible going back down to 145lbs.

I do however believe this loss will make Mcgregor a better fighter, it's just a pity it will stop a good bit of the build up banter.

Though McGregor was looking pretty composed through the first round, but fair play Diaz caught him real good in the second and McGregor was finished from there he looked completely rocked. Never stood a chance on the floor. Totally deserved.

Why was Mcgregor vs Lawler the likely fight after this one? Because Conor fought a Lightweight middle ranker at Welterweight? Kinda glad he lost this fight, now he has to earn his shots rather then pick them himself.

It would have made the most money, that's why.

I bet Robbie Lawler is almost as upset as Conor McGregor this morning. He's just missed out on the chance to make millions.

He was favorite to win his second title against RDA and the next title up was held by Lawler. Dana said Mcgregor got his last fight with RDA because ''he does that he says''. Basically he's making the UFC a shit load of money and making the sport incredibly popular so they would've never turned him down.

Lawler would've murdered him. RDA probably would've murdered him too.

Conor has fecked himself over with this fight. Not just the opponent but the weight he chose to fight at. There is no way he can go up to 170 and then back down to 145 for ufc 200. There is also no way he fights RDA any time soon either. Not only that but he just lost to a guy who isn't competing for the title in LW. I honestly cant see him doing too much in that weight class and cutting weight again will feck him up.

Eat fecking shit, McGregor.

Absolutely divine to see him being all cocky and then get absolutely slaughtered.

Orgasmic.
Yep 1st Ronda Rousey now Conor, both far to confident and believed in there own hype way to much and set them self up for a massive fall

Exactly, the RDA injury fecked up everything for him.

McGregor should go back and camp out in the 145 division for a few years now. He gave it a crack at 170, something not many of the lads calling him a pussy on twitter and what not have ever done and it just didn't work out. There's no shame in that.

Move back to his comfort zone and take on and shut up whatever is thrown at him. Make a handy few quid as well while he's at it because he'll still be a massive draw.

Easy enough to make this loss yesterdays news and seem like feck all down the line too with another win against Aldo or a win against Edgar.

People always go on about nightmare scenarios for the ufc. I don't see that at all.

There is always and I mean always new stories or fighters to promote. Look through the history and it's always the case. This time next year we will see a whole bunch of new headliners that fans are excited for

I reckon tonight they are already planning ronda v Tate part 3 which now becomes a huge fight

I disagree. McGregor losing is a nightmare scenario for them. I like Conor and his character is to sell his fights. It's equally the UFCs job to sell fights but the way they marketed this fight especially (Dana White in particular) was dreadful.

I saw an interview with him where he basically implies the likes of Aldo and Edgar were scared of fighting McGregor. It's just odd for a promoter to do that. The way White words things and speaks about people is just pretty dreadful really for someone in his position. Now McGregor has lost and in reality his only viable option for a fight next is either Aldo or Edgar...the 2 same people Dana White has criticized.

I don't blame McGregor for calling fighters pussys etc it's his persona and he was very humble in defeat. Dana White (and him speaking on behalf of the UFC) implying people are terrified of this fight is just odd.

They put all their eggs in 2 baskets over the last couple of years. Rousey and McGregor. Within the space of 6 months they've fecked themselves over quite a bit putting both in bad fights for them. People lose in MMA so it's no shock but the way they've done it could of been prevented. I'd say the Rousey one especially is awful, she lost her whole aura and also came across as a horrible person in defeat. The image is ruined slightly now.

Plus losses aren't necessarily the end of the world in MMA. Conor's mystique will take a hit but he'll still be a big draw.

I agree with that but again echo what I've said above. The UFC should learn over these 6 months to probably not shit on everyone to accommodate 1 or 2 fighters. I don't think people paid to see McGregor lose like they probably did with Rousey and definitely Mayweather in boxing as he'd lost already but his trash talk takes a big hit now which is what helps him sell the fight. Like has been said previous there's a real chance he could lose to Edgar and/or Aldo and then it's all over really.

With regards to the event there's no point discussing the undercard it was pretty shit to be honest. Happy for Tate and Diaz, good to see some shocks really (and I won money on Tate.) It mixes up a few things and does give the UFC a headache as to what to do now. Despite what Dana said in the press conference is Holm won this then the Rousey rematch as surely happening and McGregor would of had his pick of title fights at 200.

Conor with sound answers in the post-fight presser, starts in the 9th minute.

I don't think he will be relevant in the UFC this time next year. I can see Dana really deserting him as his marketability wanes and I can see a few more losses coming his way to completely destroy any hype for him. He has definitely lost a lot of his draw now, after losing the way he did.

Only skipped through to his bits, but to be fair to him he knows he's been beaten and isn't really making any excuses for it. More than you can say for a lot of people.

McGregor was solid gold for the UFC, he was the first fighter with true cross over appeal into the mainstream the world over, even I started following his career. My brother totally bought into his hype but no one is unbeatable in the fight game, in a meritocracy anyway.

I guess his only road to redemption is to get his head down and achieve what he said he would. A defeat shouldn't end a fighter in any combat sport.

He rose too quickly and will drop equally as fast IMO.

You know what they say about the flame Tha burns the brightest burns the shortest amount of time. His flame was like a fecking bonfire.

I think the next couple of fights are key. I know that probably sounds obvious

I think his image can take this loss providing he gets straight back onto doing what he did before, if he sees another loss in the next couple then its going to be curtains in terms of his super stardom at this level. Obviously he can still have a great UFC career but not like we've been seeing now.

I don't know. I only take a passing interest in UFC but his interview acknowledged the obvious, that he overestimated his power at the higher level so he needs a different strategy. I think his main problem going forward will be the shattering of his aura. His massive personality and confidence made people believe in his invincibility along with his work in fights. Fighters will now take a new confidence into bouts with him.

UFC fighters should drop the Mayweather talk! McGregor was talking up a boxing match against Floyd last week claiming he should get 80/20 of the split . In reality he would lose every second of every round against Floyd in a boxing match. Similar to Rousey I am sure all that talk will stop now.

I honestly don't know where he wins his next fight.

Cutting back down to 145 will feck him up and I reckon an Aldo rematch will go badly for him. This loss will renew Aldo's belief and he will come back with a vengeance. Frankie may be better but I see him getting dominated on the ground there.

Lightweight he has lost all credibility. Cerrone maybe is the best matchup but even then he has been shown that his power means nothing in that weight class and he doesn't have the chin to shake off their punches. The rest of the top guys in there are so good at every facet of fighting there isn't really any match where he doesn't get exposed.

They should...I bet they won't though. Mayweather is a bigger name than everyone single one of them and it's pretty much free publicity for them. The Rousey one was hilariously cringing. She got so worked up cos he didn't know who she was.

Yeah this is my thoughts too. 145 is a long way back from where he is now, it's not like he was fighting at 170 with excess body fat or anything he's pretty fecking lean. Aside from disgusting dehydration I don't know where the weight is gonna come from.

The trouble for McGregor is, where does he go now? I re watched the Mendes fight yesterday and that made me think Nate would win, as people focus on Chad taking him down and Connor getting up to win, but when you watch the fight back, Chad was getting through with decent strikes before the take down. When you watch carefully for Chads strikes, it made it hard to give Connor a chance against Nate. But he's very unlikely to fair any better against Dos Anjos and Frankie Edgar is made for Conor at 145. Conor wont take the Edgar fight. I think Cowboy is the best option for him.

Well he's still the featherweight champ and the biggest draw in the sport.

Fairly obvious where he goes now. Aldo or Edgar to defend the belt. If anything this next is the big one. Interesting to see how he bounces back.

Maybe he can get some training in with the Diaz brothers. Sure they'd hook him up.

I think he was over confident in his own power coming in to this one against a with a notoriously iron chin.

If you can say anything about the Diaz brothers it's that they're game as feck and won't go down easy.

Nick vs Paul Daley is one of my favorite fights ever.

Conor basically saying he's back to 145. Also pushed for Nate to get the shot at RDA which is nice (shouldn't happen though, but who knows after this). Mcgregor is handling it well which will help him bounce back with the fans.

To people who have a solid understanding of MMA, did it look like Conor got overconfident? It looked to me as though he was pretty comfortable but wanted to stop Diaz when it wasn't really necessary?

Yeah for me he's got to starve himself back down to 145 and make a statement there by defending against Aldo or Edgar but probably both.

If he handles that then he can look at moving to his ideal weight class which is 155.

Like I said above, overconfident in his own power I think. He pretty much said so himself after that he was looking for the big shot rather than being more disciplined in his approach.

Regretted waking up for that, mainly as I couldn't get back to sleep
Today is going to be a struggle :(

He also didn't use his kicks to the body enough. Diaz has the reach advantage in boxing but Conor has the range when he kicks to connect and had the better kicking ability overall. There wasn't the worry of Diaz catching his kicks like Mendes did either (Every time Conor kicked Mendes stomach he tried to go for a takedown) so he could risk going for them. It was also a tactic he said he would utilise in the fight, aiming for Diaz's stomach and he didn't bother doing so.

His game plan was poor this fight.

Anytime I hear the initials "GSP" my pants get messy.

I don't get this at all. His last half a dozen fights were compete snooze fests. Great fighter but not somebody I especially miss watching.

That said if they can get him back to face Lawler at 200 consider me at least intrigued.
