The MMA thread

It's the money fight in the division with their past history and it being a rubber match as much as I disagree with it because Faber has looked a shell of his former self recently.

Nooo! I like both these guys and this will really set one of them back :(

yeah, and the PPV selling season already started. the trash talking from those 2 gonna be unbearable for the upcoming months.

The california kid calling Dominique "Old"... brilliant.

I hope Faber can smash him somehow.

I hope the hype never end, Mcgregor's such a show man and so passionate about fighting. The banter makes these long ass waits between fights bearable!

Felt a bit sorry for Cormier today as he did his Frank Grimes bit.

Is it possible that Connors easy/lack of weight cut will go against him? Ive heard fighters talk about the process and routine of a weight cut helping them mentally. Is is possible such a (relative to all his previous fights) easy cut will feck with his head a little?

I think he still had to cut, there was talk of him walking around at 177lbs the week before the fight, that's what sparked all the steroid talk from Diaz.

I'm looking forward to the fight massively but I can never motivate myself to stay awake when I know the fight could be over in seconds like McGregor vs Aldo

Will definitely be watching this tomorrow morning though. I hope McGregor wins

He also had to deal with the disappointment of not fighting for the lightweight title and is facing someone he's expected to beat in a way that wasn't the case in his previous fights. All of that combined with the easy weight cut could theoretically make him a bit complacent and unfocused I guess.

Mentioned in this article that Diaz won't have to cut either. For me, who didnt know how horrible cuts are, it adds a really interesting angle. If both fight like beasts, will it change attitudes to weight cuts?

Which is why Diaz winding him up could have a reverse effect. It could focus him more and make him more invested in winning.

Speaking of Kavanagh, does anybody know his background? Is he a hidden gem of a coach in Ireland? Just curious about McGregor's lineup with Diaz recent insults about them.

I doubt it... I dont know too much about him but there aren't exactly any 'stars' in SBG apart from Conor, who is a monster athlete. But of course, I could be wrong, dont know too much about him.

It was interesting seeing Conor flinch at the weigh-ins when Nate moved towards him. First time I seen that!

I don't know much about him but my guess is Conor is just very loyal so regardless of how highly rated or not Kavanagh is he'll probably stick with him.

He expected Nate to swing at him after the press conference happened.

The stills show him smiling, seemed less like a flinch and more that he was expecting him to swing and was pre-empting it.

We've a handful of BJJ black belts in Ireland, he's one of them. He's an excellent coach.

You guys analyse the trash talk stuff way too much. Conor said it himself in the press conference, to paraphrase, 'all this mind games and mental warfare is bullshit, I win the fights because I am a better fighter'.

It does make a difference at some points. I don't care what anyone says, to me, it definitely affected Aldo.

It makes a difference. The trash talk is energy sapping and against McGregor, its on a different level.

Can you imagine what it feels like being Conors opponent at press conference and having every journo in the room hanging on his every word. And anytime you do make a point, it get overshadowed by something McGregor says because he's said it louder and with more charisma. Multiply that by ten when English isn't your first language.

And its not just the 30 minutes at the press conference either. Conor's opponent will have spent all day thinking about getting the piss taken out of him in front of the worlds media.

Anyone got a confirmed ring-walk time for McGregor later? GMT if poss.

I have not wanted it to be five in the morning this much in a long time. I would have been nervous had he been fighting dos Anjos tonight but I think he's the far superior fighter to Diaz.

Don't underestimate the guy.

Not underestimating just think McGregor will have far too much for him. Diaz is a good fighter, a tough cookie, but he isn't elite.
But he has size advantage and is great at submissions. Could catch Conor Mcgregor on the floor.

Diaz doesn't shoot takedowns really, don't see the fight going to the mat.
Well, if he has a brain he would. Mcgregors takedown defence is pretty poor and his ground game passable at best. He can hold his own against a good wrestler but will be dominated by a great BJJ practitioner. Diaz is as good as any on the ground.

Like you say though, he is too thick to take it to the ground and Mcgregor is the best striker in the whole of the UFC.

You see the Mendes fight, he defended about half of his takedowns.

Conor would be in severe danger of getting submitted if the fight hits the mat. He needs to keep the fight standing.

My dislike for Jones just grows and grows. It would be glorious to see Cormier beat him but I don't see it happening.

Looking forward to tonight. Pumped for McGregor/Diaz but more intrigued by Tate/Holm. An absolutely huge fight for Holm. The scenes if McGregor lost would be hilarious but don't see him losing this one. Win or lose I'm expecting it to all kick off after the fight.

Did he? I thought he got caught needlessly in that fight. I mean he had the reach advantage and Chad was dead on his feet after Mcgregor went to work on his stomach but he still managed to pass Mcgregors guard and take him down. Needless they were. He was dominated on the ground that game too, although he slipped out of the guillotine attempt pretty well.

That's pretty poor though . Good TDD is more like resisting 80% of takedown attempts if not 90%. Aldo, Lawler, Gustaffson, Joanna all have great TDD. Conor not so much, which makes his success more incredible as he's managed to put people away before they can make it count. Mendes got takedowns at will initially but Conor destroyed him on the feet and then all of a sudden Conor was able to stuff with ease.
